Travel Innovation Award for digital transformation in the Fraport Group

June 18, 2021 by PressEditor

Fraport AG has received the 2021 Travel Innovation Award for digital transformation and innovative projects. Plug and Play, the world’s largest early-stage investor, bestowed this kudo on the company during the Expo Day it held in Vienna on June 17 of this year.

“This award goes to companies that have demonstrated exceptional effort and commitment in developing digital innovations,” explained Benjamin Klose, the CEO of Plug and Play Austria. “In less than a year, the Fraport Group worked with various startups in our ecosystem to launch more pilot projects with good prospects of a rollout than any of our other members.”

The Digital Factory

With a virtual organizational unit called the Digital Factory, the airport operator is banking on digital and innovative solutions and technologies for optimizing services for customers and employees: “By developing and deploying creative digital solutions today, we are helping to shape tomorrow’s world of travel,” stated Claus Grunow, who heads Group Strategy and Digitalization at Fraport AG. “We’re striving to boost our group’s digital maturity and competitiveness. Due to the crisis, we’re focusing on projects that yield particularly great benefits.”

A team of experts on digitalization and other fields is developing innovative solutions for aspects of airport operation and will present its first usable product within three months. It is focusing its efforts not only on Frankfurt Airport, but also on the group’s subsidiaries and holdings elsewhere in the world.

Plug and Play Innovation Partner

Since launching its “Digital Factory”, Fraport has been working with the Plug and Play Tech Center (“Plug and Play”), the world’s largest early-stage investor, accelerator and corporate innovation platform with global headquarters in Sunnyvale, California in the Silicon Valley. Thanks to access to this platform with more than 30,000 technology and startup companies, the team is rapidly developing solutions for mastering operational challenges. Numerous projects have already been launched within the Fraport Group.

Improving the travel process

In order to analyze passenger flows in the terminals at Frankfurt Airport more effectively, a new technology is being tested that anonymously and dynamically captures passenger volumes over a large area. Special “lidar sensors” generate a precise 3D image depicting their movements, which is then analyzed. “Among other things, this will allow us to forecast waiting times at the security checkpoints with a lead time of 10 minutes, thus improving passengers’ overall travel experience,” says Grunow.

Occupancy-based parking rates

In the future, the rates for parking close to the terminals will vary dynamically – depending on the available space in the parking facilities. Passengers will pay less to park their vehicles at Frankfurt Airport in times of lower demand.

Automatic license plate detection

CargoCity South has also introduced a valuable innovation that benefits customers: if they register online beforehand, the gate automatically opens for them to drive in, saving 10 minutes each time. Assuming an average of 10,000 vehicles entering each week, a cumulative total of 10 years of time will be saved per calendar year. With this system the airport operator is responding to the increased traffic volumes resulting from the enormous and still-expanding cargo volumes that are handled here. The effect will be to achieve smoother operation of the complex logistical processes involved.

Active in other countries

A project now being implemented by Fraport USA is focusing on a sensor-based solution combined with an analytical tool to shed light on which shops passengers visit and which products they purchase. The insights derived will help retailers develop targeted marketing campaigns and promotions to meet customer needs better.

More information on Fraport’s digitalization strategy and ongoing projects is available here.

Fraport Twin Star receives Innovative Employer award

June 14, 2021 by PressEditor

The thousands of visitors arriving this summer at Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) airports on Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast will be greeted by the vibrant colors and sweet aroma of 5,000 newly planted roses. This unique Bulgarian Roses Airport Project was just one of more than 150 different improvement projects initiated during the Corona lock-down this spring by the staff of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD – the company the company that operates these two gateways to the 400-kilometer-long Black Sea Coast holiday region.

In recognition of its staff engagement and commitment, Fraport Twin Star recently received the Innovative Employer award from the Federation of Transport Trade Unions in Bulgaria. Specially launched this year, the new award honors Fraport Twin Star’s initiatives which benefit airport employees and visitors alike. Presenting the award in a ceremony at Albena Beach resort near Varna, Ekaterina Yordanova, the chairwoman of the Federation of Transport Trade Unions stressed: “Fraport Twin Star turned the uncertainty of the COVID-19 crisis into positive energy – giving staff the satisfaction of achieving a common team goal – to create a healthy and inspiring airport environment.”

Fraport Twin Star staff contributed a total of 30,000 hours for some 150 projects at Varna and Burgas airports.

These projects not only improved the appearance of landside and airside areas, but also maintained assets and enhanced the work environments for staff. For example, offices and staff resting areas, public areas, and airport equipment have been refurbished. Fraport Twin Star wanted to make the best use of the working capacities in view of the sharp traffic decline across Europe.

Fraport Twin Star CEO Frank Quante stated: “All airport areas d Burgas have been prepared in the very best way possible – also with thousands of Bulgaria’s famous roses – to welcome passengers and guests to Varna and Burgas in the 2021 summer tourist season. We are ready for the tourists and invite everyone to spend time at the beautiful Bulgarian Black Sea, with its rich culture and perfect beaches.”

Roses of Bulgaria await visitors at Burgas Airport

CEO Quante also underscored that the Twin Star airports have received Healthy Airport certification from ACI Airports Council International, the industry’s worldwide association. “Over 60 operational criteria checked by ACI visibly demonstrate our best industry practices. This confirms the massive efforts Fraport Twin Star has made in implementing wide-ranging health protection and hygiene measures at Varna and Burgas,” added Quante. Twin Star’s health protection measure include deep cleaning and disinfection, health screening, physical distancing, airport staff health education, passenger protection, extensive communications through online and offline channels, a personalized customer service approach, facilities reconfiguration, and digitalization of processes. A major task was the treatment of thousands of high-contact surface areas at the Twin Star airports using state-of-the-art anti-microbial nanotechnology coatings for long-term surface protection.

Santa Arrives in The Bahamas for an Extended Stay on Stocking Island

December 30, 2020 by PressEditor

This year has been long and taxing for everyone — even the world’s jolliest. As an essential worker, Santa’s annual duties this year came with the added pressure of spreading more cheer than ever before.

As a token of appreciation, The Bahamas invited Santa to hang up his suit and hat after the holidays and spend the next year defrosting on Stocking Island in the picturesque Exuma Cays. By gifting Santa and Mrs. Claus complimentary BEATS visas (Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay), they are now able to unwind and experience The Bahamas’ most merry offerings until next Christmas.

Trading snowy boots for bare feet on one of the most beautiful beaches in The Bahamas and where they will feel right at home, Mr. and Mrs. Claus are now soaking up the sun on Jolly Hall Beach, which is reserved especially for The Clauses and their elves. And, thanks to the seclusion of the Out Islands of The Bahamas, they can remain socially distant and out of the public eye on Stocking Island, while they relax and enjoy all the outdoor adventures The Bahamas has to offer.

“Santa wasn’t the only one working overtime this year; we know that people everywhere need a break and change of scenery,” said Joy Jibrilu, Director General, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. “The Bahamas welcomes paradise seekers of all kinds to embrace island-time, and we offer a variety of island escapes perfect to suit each visitor’s unique remote working needs.”

The Bahamas has 16 unique islands for travelers to choose from, each with its own individual personality, seclusion and adventure. In The Bahamas, outdoor activities are aplenty, making the destination perfect for a safe, socially distant getaway. A full list of current travel offers can be found on Bahamas.com/deals.

Given that Santa and Mrs. Claus are immune to COVID-19 and in recognition of their hard work during the 2020 holiday season, the Director General is honoured to grant them honourary Travel Health Visas.  Travel entry requirements for the rest of Santa’s entourage and all other visitors can be found on Bahamas.com/travelupdates — including details specifically related to testing and obtaining The Bahamas Travel Health Visa.

Additional details related to the BEATS program application, such as costs and frequently asked questions, are available at BahamasBeats.com.

ABOUT THE BAHAMAS

With over 700 islands and cays, and 16 unique island destinations, The Bahamas lies just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, offering an easy fly away escape that transports travelers away from their everyday. The Islands of The Bahamas have world-class fishing, diving, boating and thousands of miles of the earth’s most spectacular water and beaches waiting for families, couples and adventurers. Tourism on Agenda for Renewed Jamaica-Nigeria Bilateral Talks

December 29, 2020 by PressEditor

Tourism is expected to be a major item on the agenda of talks to take place soon in Abuja, Nigeria, aimed at formalizing a new Jamaica-Nigeria bilateral agreement between the two nations.

Previously set for earlier this year, the talks were postponed due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic but with a direct air link now open between the two countries, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Geoffrey Onyeama are expressing optimism of it happening soon.

“For many years, we have been looking at formalizing a new bilateral agreement between Jamaica and Nigeria; now the contents of that are being put together. We were to have had a meeting in Abuja in April of this year; it didn’t happen because of Covid but is expected to happen soon,” said Minister Bartlett following a closed door meeting with Minister Onyeama at the Round Hill Hotel in Montego Bay last night.  He is hoping “that in the frame of all of that will be discussions with regards to tourism collaboration between the two countries.”

The Tourism Minister identified marketing through the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) as well as product development and destination assurance strategy developed by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), presented to the world as a new way of dealing with post-Covid tourism, as possible points of collaboration for which a technical corporation agreement can be arrived at.

Also on the cards is the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, which was established by Jamaica to assess, forecast, mitigate and managing risks related to tourism resilience, caused by various disruptive factors. “We have already established a satellite in Kenya for East Africa and we really would love to have one established in either Abuja or Lagos for West Africa,” said Minister Bartlett. An arrangement is already under consideration and will be pursued involving the University of the West Indies (Mona), which hosts the resilience centre in Jamaica, and a university in Nigeria.

Minister Onyeama concurred that “We now have the framework in place to strengthen the cooperation and to take it to another level and we are going to pursue that. Covid has delayed it but it has not stopped it so we are going to cooperate in different areas, in trade, agriculture, sports, you name it, and really fuse the two countries and our peoples together.”

He stated that Jamaica “has a comparative advantage in tourism, which plays an enormous role in the economy, job creation and so on, so we really feel that we would like for you to share that experience with us. We believe it will be a game changer. We’re looking at diversifying our economy; we’ve depended too much on oil and the petroleum sector and there are gold mines out there in other sectors that can really transform our economy and provide jobs for our teeming population of 200 million.”

The Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister said his country had a youthful population with most being in the age range of 30 years “so we believe with our brothers and sisters in Jamaica that we can transform the future of both of us into real wins. We’re looking at prosperity for our people and we believe that this partnership can deliver that for our two countries.”

He also expressed an interest in learning about Jamaica’s culinary strategy. “Nigeria has a wide variety of dishes and we were told that your ackee was voted by National Geographic as the world’s second best national dish, so I think there’s some knowledge that you have there that we also want to tap into,” he said.

On December 21, the historical link between Jamaica and Nigeria was strengthened with the first non-stop flight from Lagos landing at the Sangster International Airport. Among those on board with the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister was Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Esmond Reid. Last night he said this direct flight “is the beginning of a transformed relationship, not just for Jamaica-Nigeria, but for Africa and the Caribbean and Jamaica stands ready to play a central role in that partnership.”
