Sandals Royal Bahamian expands renovation project, revises opening date

Sandals Resorts International (SRI) announced today an expansion of the existing multi-million-dollar renovation of Sandals Royal Bahamian, the brand’s award-winning hotel, spa and private island located in Nassau, Bahamas, with plans to reopen January 27, 2022.

In addition to the already-announced iconic river suites and refurbishment of over 200 rooms and suites, Sandals Royal Bahamian will unveil an innovative new concept, Coconut Grove, an expansive lounge area that extends the beach vibes to the center of the resort. Shaded by coconut palms, the new setting will feature an immediate connection to the resort’s Caribbean setting with gourmet food trucks, chic, relaxing seating, and unparalleled views of the sea.  A reimagination of its famed private island, Sandals Cay, with updated lounge settings and a new gastronomic experience, will complement the resort’s latest innovations.  So as not to intrude upon the guest experience, the resort will remain closed while construction is underway and will reopen for the 2022 season.

“Moving the opening date from November 4th was a very difficult decision,” said SRI Executive Chairman Adam Stewart.  “While we could reopen much of the resort, worldwide demand for commodities and supply chain disruptions are delaying our ability to complete the project’s full scope.  Keeping this hotel under wraps until it is absolutely ready is the right thing to do. We’re in an environment of great expectation and when our guests arrive, it will be a place of Caribbean calm and cool that will definitely have been worth the wait.”

Guests with reservations at Sandals Royal Bahamian during its closure will be accommodated at the available Sandals Resorts location of their choice including Sandals Emerald Bay in Great Exuma for guests wishing to keep their reservation in the Bahamas.  Sandals Resorts will assume all airline change fees.

Sandals Resorts Barbados: Opened and welcoming guests

It was what Sandals Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart called a landmark day when 2 of their Barbados hotels reopened last month, the last to do so since the pandemic arrived over a year ago.

“Today is a landmark day for Sandals Resorts International, marking the first time since the start of the pandemic, that we are operational in every Caribbean destination we serve,” said Stewart. “This is a testament to our incredible team, our loyal guests and travel advisors who trust our brands to deliver on our promises of putting the health and safety of their customers first.”

All Sandals Resorts, except for Sandals Royal Bahamian, which is undergoing an extensive transformation and will reopen November 4, are fully open and operational. All 3 Beaches Resorts, with locations in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos, are also open.

Sandals Resorts International unveils plans for 3 new Jamaica resorts

Resort groundbreaking marked the ongoing commitment to Jamaica and the location that inspired founder Gordon “Butch” Stewart to build Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean. 

Calling it a “poignant and tremendously significant time,” Sandals Resorts Executive Chairman Adam Stewart told gathered officials, “This is an extraordinary day for Sandals Resorts and a moment of deep meaning for my family.”

Sandals Resorts International (SRI), the Caribbean’s leading Luxury Included® Resort company, celebrated its legacy in Jamaica and affirmed its unshakable commitment to the country at a special groundbreaking ceremony attended by dignitaries including the Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

The event celebrated the first phase of an ambitious US$230 million project, that will include Sandals Dunn’s River followed by Phase II of transforming the adjacent oceanfront land into Sandals Royal Dunn’s River, a commitment to the organization’s wider expansion plans in its home country.   

“We stand today nearby where my father grew up, a place that was close to his heart,” added Adam Steward. “As we embark on our strategic growth plans, we are proud to bring to life his vision through this incredible property. There will simply be nothing like it.”

Today’s event steps off last month’s announcement that SRI will transform two properties acquired last year plus a prime parcel of beachfront land into three distinct resorts in Ocho Rios. 

“As one of the most trusted hospitality brands in the world, Sandals has been one of the key players in Jamaica’s tourism sector for many years, and we are pleased they will be expanding their presence in the destination,” said Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Hon. Edmund Bartlett. “The acquisition and development of three new Sandals [Resorts International] properties in Ocho Rios is yet another example of the significant investments we are seeing in Jamaica that will enhance our tourism infrastructure, increase our offerings and ultimately job opportunities for our workers.”

The New Sandals Dunn’s River & Sandals Royal Dunn’s River 

Phase I development plans begin with the total transformation of Sandals Dunn’s River – which returns to the Sandals family under the same moniker as when it was originally added to the Sandals Resorts portfolio in 1990. SRI has targeted completion of the new Sandals Dunn’s River for fourth quarter 2022. Phase II is the creation of sister-property Sandals Royal Dunn’s River, which will be adjacent and offer generous exchange privileges with a slated completion in 2023.

Stewart says the new Sandals Dunn’s River was the last project he and his late father collaborated on and is an homage to the natural beauty of their beloved Jamaica, with water pulled and circulated from natural reserves and the brand’s signature suites being a prominent feature. 

“Jamaica means land of wood and water and in Ocho Rios, the sound of moving water from Dunn’s River and Roaring Waters River is part of the experience, an ethereal backdrop that is ever present and calming.  This is the sound that will greet guests upon arrival,” he said.

In addition to cascading waterfalls at the entrance, Sandals Dunn’s River will offer a total of 260 rooms including 48 signature SkyPool Suites, a first for Jamaica, which will feature a private cantilevered, solar-heated plunge pool with infinity edge. 12 Swim-up Rondoval™ Suites with many featuring a “Rooftop Terrace” will also grace the property – both signature Love Nest Butler Suites® for the ultimate in privacy and service; 10 restaurants including a specialty rum bar inside the brand’s newest Latin Fusion restaurant concept Azuka and 9 bars; 7 pools including 2 river pools and Red Lane® Spa.

“When this resort became available, my father and I jumped at the chance to reclaim it and bring it back into the fold where it belongs. Although he cannot be with us to see its ultimate transformation, he always will be a part of everything we do. His fingerprints are on this project and he fully embraced our plans to set a new standard of luxury in Jamaica. All that will come next on our incredible slices of Jamaica beachfronts, will be in tribute to him and because of him. In addition to the $230 million development of Sandals Dunn’s River and Sandals Royal Dunn’s River, the resort company is also planning an over $250 million renovation of its third new location in Ocho Rios, Beaches Runaway Bay Resort, the third family-friendly Beaches Resort in Jamaica.  At its completion, the hotel will feature an estimated 400 expansive one, two, three and four-bedroom suites, designed with extended families in mind.  Guests of Beaches Runaway Bay also have access to Runaway Bay Golf Club and its par-72, 18-hole championship golf course.

Sandals and Beaches Resorts elevates commitment to inclusivity

In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month, Sandals and Beaches Resorts is expanding offerings at its luxury-included family resorts in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos where the resorts will become recertified as Advanced Certified Autism Centers (ACAC).

Sandals and Beaches Resorts are part of Sandals Resorts International which is a parent company to 5 resort brands across seven countries. Beaches Resorts is an operator of all-inclusive resorts for couples and families in the Caribbean, founded in 1997.

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Beaches® Resorts has announced its expanded commitment to families with children on the autism spectrum, ensuring a safe, fun, and comfortable vacation experience that’s tailored to their needs.

With one in 54 children diagnosed with autism in the U.S., special needs travel continues to be one of the fastest-growing family travel segments and one that is severely underserved. Building upon an existing partnership with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) – the global leader in cognitive disorder training and certification – Beaches Resorts has extended its Advanced Certified Autism Center (ACAC) accreditation through 2023 and continues to be the world’s first and only ACAC resort company underscoring its dedication to ensuring every family can enjoy the award-winning Luxury Included® vacation experience.

Through this ACAC recertification process, over the next several months, Beaches Resorts’ team members in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos will be eligible to participate in advanced autism training virtually, with an emphasis on the resorts’ key touch point areas, including kids camps, entertainment, front desk/reception, food and beverage and watersports operations. This recertification process will also expand to training of team members at the Airport Arrival Lounge/Reception Area in Montego Bay, Jamaica and Providenciales, Turks & Caicos, which offer the first point of contact for Beaches Resorts’ arriving guests.

The all-inclusive family resort company, in collaboration with IBCCES, will also launch a Sensory Stimulation Guide for guests with sensory needs, providing comfort and an understanding of what to expect in each designated area of the resort. The guide, which outlines the degree of sensory stimulation in a specific area or event, allows families to easily plan and navigate their visit based on their individual needs. Designated Low Sensory Areas will also be identified at all resorts, allowing guests to find comfort in designated spaces should they need a break from sensory stimulation. These locations will be easily identifiable through resort maps, onsite signage and in pre-travel planning materials.

In 2017, Beaches Resorts became the first resort company in the world to be recognized by IBCCES as a Certified Autism Center (CAC) and, as part of their larger Sesame Street partnership, also introduced Julia, a four-year-old girl on the autism spectrum, who brought an exclusive new activity to Beaches Resorts: Amazing Art with Julia. Two years later, the resort company then became the first to attain the Advanced Certified Autism Center (ACAC), recognized by IBCCES.

•             An annual onsite audit and review by the IBCCES team.

•             Changes to protocols and physical space to accommodate various needs.

•             A Culinary Concierge program to support specific dietary restrictions and special requests.

•             Modified check-in options for private, in-room, check-in.

•             Availability of sensory toys as well as DreamPad pillows for children’s use.

•             Modified design and decoration in Kids Camps and key entertainment areas to create a more sensory-friendly environment.

Sandals gives complimentary vacations to 300 Caribbean health care workers

Sandals Resorts International announced this month its decision to provide 300 health care workers across the Caribbean islands in which it operates with complimentary 2-night stays at its award-winning all-inclusive resorts.

The gesture, according to Sandals Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, is in recognition of the selfless efforts of local health care workers across the region, who continue to exhibit admirable bravery and make tremendous sacrifices in the face of what has now become a year-long fight.

“Our health care workers have been our heroes throughout this pandemic,” Stewart said. “This has been an extremely difficult year for everyone but our heroes on the front lines and our healthcare workers in particular have demonstrated a level of perseverance and commitment that is awe-inspiring. This is our way of saying thank you and showing our appreciation for what we know has been a very difficult time. These vacations are well-deserved and we can’t wait to roll out the red carpet and pamper our heroes at our Luxury-Included resorts.”

The resort company will work closely with Ministries of Health in the seven islands where it operates to identify the beneficiaries of the latest act, starting in Jamaica where the company is working with the Ministry of Health’s Staff Welfare Programs Department to gift a number of the island’s healthcare workers with much-deserved vacations.

Health care workers in Antigua, Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, Saint Lucia and The Turks and Caicos Islands are also set to receive complimentary vacations.
