Frankfurt Airport: New winter schedule features 259 destinations worldwide

October 23, 2019 by PressEditor

On October 27, Frankfurt Airport’s new winter schedule will become effective – in tandem with the end of daylight saving time in Germany. In winter 2019/20, a total of 88 airlines will be offering passenger flights from FRA, serving 259 destinations in 99 countries worldwide. Boasting the highest number of intercontinental destinations, Frankfurt Airport thus confirms its position as Germany’s prime international aviation gateway. The winter schedule will remain effective until March 28, 2020.

New to take off from FRA in the coming winter season are Corendon Airlines (XC) and Corendon Airlines Europe (XR) with regular flights to Izmir (Turkey) and Marrakesh (Morocco), respectively. German low-cost airline Eurowings (EW) will also start flying from FRA for the winter schedule 2019/20, in cooperation with its parent Lufthansa (LH).

Eurowings will be offering three weekly services to Barbados, Mauritius and Las Vegas (U.S.) from FRA. These routes will also be served by German leisure carrier Condor (DE). Moreover, EW is launching three weekly services to Windhoek in Namibia – complementing Air Namibia’s (SW) daily flight on this route.

Lufthansa will continue its five weekly service to Austin, Texas (U.S.), launched in summer 2019. The German flag carrier will also continue offering two daily flights to Chicago (U.S.) in the coming winter season. Moreover, LH will maintain the Frankfurt-Tampa route, offering six weekly flights to this sunny destination in Florida (U.S.). For those who prefer skiing in the Rocky Mountains in the winter season, United Airlines (UA) will continue offering six weekly connections from Frankfurt to Denver in the U.S. state of Colorado. Condor (DE) is again flying to Samana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, thus adding two sunny Caribbean destinations to FRA’s winter schedule.

WOW Air (WW), Adria Airways (JP) and flybmi (BM) have ceased operations due to bankruptcy. These airlines previously operated on European routes to/from FRA. Azores Airlines (S4) and Ural Airlines (U6) will also no longer be flying from FRA in the upcoming winter schedule.

Fraport AG’s executive board chairman, Dr. Stefan Schulte, said: “The growth in intercontinental services further enhances the already outstanding connectivity of the Frankfurt global aviation hub. However, we are also being impacted by the worldwide economic slowdown and a number of geopolitical risks – as well as the consolidation of the European air transport market and the capacity problems at some airlines due to the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX. In this already difficult environment, the planned increase in the domestic air traffic tax will further weaken the international competitiveness of the German aviation market.”

A total of 4,130 passenger flights per week will be operating from FRA during the winter schedule 2019/20. This represents a four percent drop compared to last year. Broken down by regions, 630 of these flights will serve domestic destinations (within Germany), while 960 will be intercontinental flights, and 2,540 flights will serve other European destinations. Seat capacity will decrease by 2.5 percent year-on-year to 760,000 seats per week overall, while seat capacity in intercontinental traffic will grow by nearly 2 percent to 280,000 seats per week.

(All the above changes are in comparison to the 2018/2019 winter schedule.)

Minister Bartlett: Jamaica recovered all lost seats from Thomas Cook collapse

September 28, 2019 by PressEditor

Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett says that Jamaica has recovered all the lost seats following Sunday’s collapse of Thomas Cook, which flies a significant number of visitors to the island from Manchester, England.

“Today Jamaica became the first country to conclude fully, all the arrangements to recover the loss airlift occasioned by the collapse of Thomas Cook,” said Minister Bartlett.

The Minister, who is currently in London for the Jamaica Travel Market, also noted that all partners have responded positively to Jamaica and his Ministry is projecting an increase in flights from the region for the upcoming winter season.

“We have met with all our key partners, our three major airlines – TUI, Virgin and British Airways and we have completely restored all the seats that would have been lost for the period and we are expecting additional arrivals for the winter,” said the Minister

He also noted that Jamaica will increase rotations but the exact number of new seats for the winter season will be announced when he returns to the island.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, the Minister stated that Thomas Cook was expected to fly 16 charters to Jamaica between now and March 2020. Those charters represent 7,300 visitors to Jamaica and a potential loss of US$10 million in tourism spend.

“The fallout that we expect will be minimal in terms of the six rotations that are immediate. The way we look at it is that they will be re-booking with some of the other carriers like Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and so on. That would minimize that fallout, so instead of the 1,800, we could recoup about 900,” said Minister Bartlett during the briefing.

The Minister and the Director of Tourism, Mr Donovan White, will return to the island on September 30, 2019.

BraytonHughes Design Studios Transforms Historic Downtown Napa Building

September 11, 2019 by PressEditor

AVOW restaurant brings the winery to the people in a new downtown setting

The internationally-acclaimed design firm  BraytonHughes Design Studios is pleased to announce AVOW Napa, a new hospitality project designed as a vow to bring luxury to everyday life. A collaborative effort by Copper Cane Wines and Provisions, Architectural Resources Group (ARG), BraytonHughes and Cello & Maudru Construction, the project is a labor of love of Joe Wagner, a native of Napa whose family’s legacy in the region stretches back across seven generations. Located at 813 Main Street, AVOW is a renovation of the historic Fagiani’s, one of downtown Napa’s most beloved landmarks. The new tri-level bar and restaurant officially opened its doors on July 10.

“With AVOW, we intend to bring an iconic landmark back to illustrious roots, mirroring the revitalization of old town Napa,” explains Copper Cane Wines & Provisions Owner, Joe Wagner, whose family founded the Caymus Vineyards in 1972 and whose own company crafts high-end wine brands such as Belle Glos and Quilt. “With the interior remodel, BraytonHughes opened up what was closed and created levels for memorable moments to unfold.”

Originally constructed in 1908, the building’s long and storied past, along with its charming Renaissance Revival architecture, inspired Wagner to acquire the property in 2016.

“We take pride in building significant structures that signal the evolution of The Valley,” says Bill Schaeffer, partner and operations manager at Cello & Maudru, a company whose first chapter began with the renovation of Napa’s historic Hess Collection Winery in 1987 and continues with planning and handcrafting beautiful places throughout the Bay Area. “AVOW is one of several projects we are planning and constructing for Copper Cane Wines and Provisions. Working closely with Joe Wagner and Jim Blumling, Copper Cane’s vice president of operations, we strived with Brayton Hughes and Architectural Resources Group to bring life to this historical space and look forward to its reestablishment as a downtown Napa landmark.”

The new restaurant, lounge and bar will be a high-end addition to the burgeoning downtown Napa area. Guests are invited to taste from the Copper Cane portfolio of wines and wines from Wagner’s friends and family.

The fresh materials and interiors by BraytonHughes echo the keen eye and creative vision of Joe, a winemaker and creator of some of the most sought-after brands, who was determined to bring a dynamic food and wine experience to an urban setting. Rather than a restaurant with a room or series of rooms with tables, chairs and food as the focal point of a repeatable experience, AVOW features flexibility in spaces and less static dining areas for a more effervescent experience.

“We embraced the building and how its three levels lend themselves naturally to delicately layered interiors,” explains Towan Kim, principal at BraytonHughes Design Studios. “Playing with a palette of varying degrees of texture, color and porousness, we created a downtown Napa destination that suits guests of all types, with a range of experiences to choose from depending on occasion and mood. A place to discover a new wine, or enjoy an old favorite whether alone, on a date or with family or friends.”

Inspired by the Past, but Perfect for Present-Day Napa

A major part of the update including peeling off the tiled exterior façade, which darkened the interior, and returning the building back to its original structure, thus reviving the proper store front with windows that offered views from inside and out. The building’s new street-level windows along with two arched windows on the second level are welcoming and inviting, shedding ample light to enliven the scene within.

“AVOW is an extremely significant project for downtown Napa, and it was a great privilege to work with the amazing ownership, design and construction team as the historic architect responsible for the exterior restoration,” says ARG Principal, Naomi Miroglio, FAIA.  “Steeped in a complex history, the building at 813 Main Street illustrates both the neighborhood’s commercial boom of the late 1800s, through its Richardsonian Romanesque details, as well as Main Street’s era of working-class bars as evidenced by the much-loved Art Deco tile storefront installed in the 1940s.”

To provide a dynamic street presence for the new restaurant, ARG’s team worked to reconstruct the historic storefront while also honoring the memory of the family who owned the bar from 1940 – 2010 through interpretive displays/plaques.  Balancing this history and in homage of the team behind AVOW, the faces of Wagner’s family members and first twenty-five staff members of Copper Cane Wines & Provisions are plastered in molds mounted on the wall of the restaurant’s third floor.  BraytonHughes’ designers worked in very close partnership with the Copper Cane team to draw upon features of the original building while imbuing the space with new dynamism. The painted white brick wall was sandblasted back to its natural reddish orange color, hearkening back to the building’s original material. Tin ceilings showcase a color gradation that lightens with each floor, akin to the distinct guest experiences at every level.

Departing from the former heavily fortified building, AVOW now includes a street-level bar that offers a large, open, social area and wine lounge for Wagner’s showcase of favorite wines; a polished restaurant and oyster bar on the second level; and an active bar/lounge and patio on the third.

A Spectrum of Experiences from Floor to Floor

BraytonHughes allowed windows, nooks, entrances and passageways on each level to guide the design, listening to the possibilities suggested by each space. Though tones may or may not change subtly from floor to floor, with darker features on the lower level, medium tones on the second, and airy spaces with lighter-toned features on the third, the common denominator across all three levels are the tin ceilings, original, refinished wood floors, and oak and brick texture on the walls.

The main level bar features marble, dark wood, dark leather and bronze finishes to accentuate the clean, sophisticated décor. Toward the back of the building, and accessible by what feels like a secret passageway, a lounge affords intimate conversations and wine tastings. BraytonHughes infused a speakeasy theme into this space with layers of quiet, appropriately placed lights, comfortable sofas and lush fabrics, and charcoal grey ceilings.

An oyster bar is the focal point of the second-level restaurant, where guests can see the shucking and catch glimpses of kitchen staff behind a translucent screen made with glass. Playing with levels of visibility and the interplay of open and intimate spaces, BraytonHughes designed the screen to suit the fine dining occasion, creating a backdrop for the end of the dining room that reflects back to the glazed, arched street-facing windows.

The second-floor restaurant décor is glamorous, with a sophisticated color palette lightened by the generous use of wood. The room features an array of booths made with white oak wood with a cerused grey finish and leather upholstery along with four-top tables constructed of solid walnut tops with metal bases. The large, channel-tufted booths create nooks for smaller groups while a racetrack chandelier with resin-like crystals adds a suspended grace note over the four-top tables. In a glass cabinet above the booths, a large scale showcased alongside a collection of wines calls to mind the balance a wine achieves when all components are working in harmony.

Proceeding to the rooftop deck on AVOW’s third floor, guests will find a terrace equipped with Iroko wood lounge seating, indoor bar height custom tables with brass and bronze plated finishes, and a centered firepit.

About Copper Cane Wines & Provisions

Founded in 2014, Copper Cane has redefined the modern winery with their unique approach to the winemaking process. When grapevine canes begin to lignify, or turn to winter hardy wood, they take on a copper hue. This color shift signals that the green character and harsh tannins have been purged from the vine (and therefore the wine). Only then are the grapes ready for harvest. For Copper Cane’s founder, Joseph Wagner, this patience is essential. While most growers pick their grapes as sugar content hits a certain mark, Wagner waits for physiological maturity to ensure consistency year to year. The result is a wine full of rich, ripe fruit flavors—a style Wagner and his family have always loved. Representative brands include Elouan, Belle Glos, Napa Valley Quilt, and Böen. In addition to his many brands of wines, Joseph also owns the premium cigar line Avrae and the Napa Valley restaurant AVOW.

Visitors showed Anguilla the love this winter

May 23, 2019 by PressEditor

*Island Enjoys Record-Breaking Winter Season*

Anguilla welcomed guests from around the world this winter, resulting in the island’s best winter season in over 27 years. Guests flocked to Anguilla in record numbers, to bask on the island’s 33 pristine beaches, surrounded by sapphire seas; sample the extraordinary variety of delectable culinary experiences; and enjoy the warm and generous hospitality for which the island is so well known.

A further indication of the island’s impressive recovery, Anguilla logged yet another record-breaking month in March, with 11,940 tourist stayover arrivals.  This marks not only the highest March in history, but also the highest monthly total in the history of Anguilla’s tourism industry. The figure represents a 29.16% increase over the same period in 2017, and a 22.55% increase over March 2016, the month that until now held the record for the most tourist arrivals.

April continued this winning streak, as the 9,790 arrivals recorded is the largest number of tourist arrivals for any month of April dating back as far as 1993.  The first quarter tourist arrivals, (January to March 2019) at 30,135, was the highest recorded since the Anguilla Tourist Board began tracking arrivals.

During the first four months of the year (January to April 2019), just under 40 thousand guests spent one or more nights on Anguilla. The island has to date attracted almost 50% of the total tourist arrivals for 2016, the island’s best year to date for tourist arrivals.  “Let us celebrate but not become complacent,” said Mrs. Donna Banks, Chairperson of the Anguilla Tourist Board.  “There is still much work to be done; our goal remains a 20% increase in tourist arrivals over 2016.  We appreciate and value the continued support and cooperation of all our stakeholders, and the people of Anguilla, in helping us to achieve these significant milestones for our industry.”

About Anguilla

Tucked away in the northern Caribbean, Anguilla is a shy beauty with a warm smile. A slender length of coral and limestone fringed with green, the island is ringed with 33 beaches, considered by savvy travelers and top travel magazines, to be the most beautiful in the world.

Anguilla lies just off the beaten path, so it has retained a charming character and appeal. Yet because it can be conveniently reached from two major gateways: Puerto Rico and St. Martin, and by private air, it’s a hop and a skip away.

Romance? Barefoot elegance? Unfussy chic? And untrammeled bliss?   Anguilla is Beyond Extraordinary.
