Guam and Karatsu friendship strengthened in Japan

November 13, 2019 by PressEditor

The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) helped to strengthen friendship ties with the small Japanese coastal city of Karatsu from November 2-4, 2019.

Led by GVB Japan Marketing Committee Chairman Satoru Murata, the Guam delegation met with Karatsu Mayor Tatsuro Mine and other high-ranking leaders to discuss ways of furthering Guam and Japan’s friendship, as well as developing a youth exchange program in English speaking countries. Karatsu was also invited to attend the next Pacific Island Environmental Conference.

“We were honored to have met with our friends in Karatsu and thank them for their hospitality. We’re appreciative of their efforts to help our island home with their recycling efforts and resources,” said GVB Vice President Bobby Alvarez. “It’s these types of friendships that show us how tourism works to reinforce the over 50 year bond between Guam and Japan.”

Karatsu has been Guam’s official Friendship City since July 24, 2013. However, there has been a strong connection between both locations long before that official title. Karatsu has been shipping basalt rocks to Guam for the island’s roads. The Friendship City also helps with Guam’s treatment of waste, including recycling glass bottles and scrap tires. The recycled waste is loaded to the empty ships that bring the basalt rocks to Guam.

Karatsu officials also invited the Guam delegation to attend the city’s Kunichi Festival, which was added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage List.  The festival featured a daily parade of fourteen Hikiyama, which are massive traditional floats in the form of samurai helmets, sea bream, and dragons constructed from wood, lacquer, and other materials. The event attracted an estimated 570,000 visitors.

Karatsu is located on the island of Kyushu in the Saga Prefecture of Japan and has a population of 78,386 people.

Bahamas Tourism Minister attends Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and praises organizers for exclusively promoting The Bahamas

November 12, 2019 by PressEditor

Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, Bahamas Tourism Minister, recently attended the 60th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) which made a big splash in support of The Bahamas, and which proved to be an amazing opportunity for the Minister and The Islands Of The Bahamas.

Dubbed FLIBS-4-Bahamas (#FLIBS4Bahamas), the United States Boat Shows at Informa Markets and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, organizers of the 2019 FLIBS, selected The Bahamas as its exclusively featured vacation destination during the show, which ran October 30 through November 3, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale.  In addition, they organized several fundraising initiatives, where proceeds were earmarked for aid to residents in Abaco impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

“We feel it is our duty and a privilege to support our friends and neighbors, and we are committed to Grand Bahama and the Abacos’ full recovery.  In addition to helping raise funds, we endeavor to get the word out that The Bahamas is still open for tourism and business, as there are beautiful and pristine areas not affected and tourism is their number one industry,” said Andrew Doole, President of US Boat Shows at Informa Markets.

The opening ceremony to the world’s largest in-water boat show was conducted in conjunction with the Bahamas Consul General in Miami, Mrs. Linda Mackey, to symbolize the unique partnership with the organizers, The Bahamas and Florida.  Junkanoo Gawds, a Bahamian group based in Florida, entertained showgoers.

Several fundraising activities including the raffle of a Pioneer 180 Sportsfish boat benefitted True North’s Mission of Hope, a charity for residents of Marsh Harbour. The raffled craft, outfitted with a 114 four-stroke engine and trailer and valued at $50,000, was donated by Palm City Yachts.

A Sunset Soiree & Yacht Chef Competition, an exquisite, $125 plated dinner, per person, served as another fundraiser that benefitted the people of Abaco via Mission of Hope and One Bahamas Fund.  Minister D’Aguilar served as a celebrity judge at the gourmet savored event, and chefs’ uniforms were adorned with Bahamas flag crescents stitched into them.

Throughout the show, the Bahamas presence was felt and it was clear — The Bahamas branded fly away campaign and activation message – we are open for business… and It’s Better In The Bahamas was ubiquitous!  Branded Bahamas tags were visible for miles in the skies throughout the Fort Lauderdale and Broward areas.  Beautifully inviting images of The Bahamas, wrapped around trucks and buses transporting guests to the area, also resonated that message.

Showgoers participated in Junkanoo rush outs by Nassau’s popular groups, Colors and the Junkanoo Gawds, as others sipped on Kalik beer, the national beer of The Bahamas.

At the Bahamas Pavilion, traffic was consistently brisk, with thousands stopping by daily to enquire and support The Islands Of The Bahamas.

Describing his experience at the show as an incredible and educational one, Minister D’Aguilar said the show was very successful and reaped opportunities for The Bahamas. He capitalized on every available moment at the show.

While there, the Minister met with media professionals and conducted one-on-one interviews with reporters from WSVN Channel 7, WPLG Channel 10, Boating Magazine and N&J Yachting, reinforcing the message that “15 of The Bahamas’ 16 islands are open for business and that the best way to help the people of The Bahamas and its economy is to visit The Bahamas”.

He also met with current and potential investors and super yacht owners, charter operators and brokers interested in and conducting business in The Bahamas, including Bradford Marine, National Marine Suppliers, United States Super Yacht Association and International Yacht Brokers Association.

Minister D’Aguilar also took time out to visit every hotel and marina operator from The Bahamas, who participated in the Show.

Among the Bahamas vendors at this year’s show were:  Bahamasair, Kalik Beer, Bahamas Maritime, Bahamas National Trust, Palm Cay Marina, Hurricane Hole Marina, Flying Fish Marina, Bay Street Marina, Romora Bay Resort & Marina, Staniel Cay Marina, Cape Eleuthera Resort, Tropic Ocean Air, Valentine’s Resort, The Pointe, Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board and the Association of Bahamas Marinas.

Boating is one of the leading contributors to The Bahamas tourism economy.  2018 has been a banner and historic year for tourism in The Bahamas.  And up until the passage of Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, business activities showed signs that 2019 performance would surpass the 2018 performance levels.

Following Dorian, which impacted parts of Abaco and Grand Bahama, the latter of which is now fully open, all efforts of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism have been directed to ensuring that the world knows that The Bahamas is open for business, and welcoming visitors with open arms.

It is estimated that more than 110,000 persons and 1,200 exhibitors from 52 countries attended this year’s FLIBS.

New air service makes island of St. Helena accessible to more American travelers

October 29, 2019 by PressEditor

New flights are making it easier for curious Americans to visit one of the world’s most off-the-beaten-track destinations – the island of St. Helena.

Far flung in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, St. Helena (pronounced St. Hel-EE-na) is one of the planet’s most remote inhabited islands: 1,200 miles from Africa, and 1,800 miles from South America. And, it is its remoteness that is its charm and the source of its rich history.

The 47-square-mile volcanic island was – until very recently – accessible only by sea. But United Airlines’ new nonstop flights from New York to Cape Town, and new SAA Airlink flights from Cape Town (in addition to Johannesburg) are making a 3-, 4- or 7-day (or longer) visit to St. Helena a reality. An increased flight schedule is set for December through February.

Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, St. Helena has been under British rule since 1657 and is, after Bermuda, the second oldest territory of the British Commonwealth. Its remoteness is what brought St. Helena fame; after the French defeat at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the island until he died there in 1821. His home is one of the most visited sites of St. Helena. Until 2017, St. Helena was reachable only by its very own Royal Mail Ship, RMS St. Helena, offering five-day voyages from Cape Town approximately every three weeks.

Today, St. Helena has a population of 4,500 and is eager to welcome visitors. It is dedicated to the conservation of its diverse and unique animal, plant, and marine life. And its capital, Jamestown, is considered one of the most authentic Georgian-period towns on earth.

St. Helena is a member of African Tourism Board.

The Islands of The Bahamas State of the Business Tourism Update

October 24, 2019 by PressEditor

What’s Open, What’s Rebuilding and What’s Recovering Across The Bahamas

More than a month has passed since Hurricane Dorian made landfall on two northern islands of The Bahamas. Already, Grand Bahama Island is rebounding with many of its hotels and attractions reopened and plans for its airport to resume international service soon. While The Abacos face a longer road to recovery, the country remains resilient and steadfast in its commitment to help the island rebuild by maintaining a healthy flow of tourism – which accounts for half of the country’s GDP – to the islands that were not affected by the storm.

Open for Business

Nassau and Paradise Island

This pair of islands which are home to the country’s most extensive array of resorts, hotels, restaurants and tour operators, were not affected by Hurricane Dorian and are operating normally.  With seasonal hotel incentives and increased airlift, it is easier than ever for travelers to visit this year.

The Out Islands

With the exception of The Abacos, the Out Islands are open and operating as usual. Some resorts and lodges take a fall hiatus for annual leave or renewal projects, but there are many options for accommodations. Airports, government ports and marinas are open across the islands.

Grand Bahama Island

Grand Bahama Island is back to business welcoming travelers at its cruise port, and soon to welcome international travelers when the airport reopens next month. Ferries and cruise lines, including Balearia, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, are already bringing travelers to Freeport to experience a number of excursions and sites that have reopened. The airport is operating domestic flights via temporary facilities and will welcome its first international flight on November 15. Numerous hotels and resorts are already open or expected to re-open within weeks.

Recovering and Rebuilding

The Abacos

Abaco has the longest road to recovery with virtually no viable options for leisure tourism in the near future.  The current focus is on re-opening local government complexes and restoring basic services to facilitate rebuilding.

Response to Hurricane Dorian

As the capital of The Bahamas and the home of the country’s government, Nassau is also a central hub for the Hurricane Dorian recovery process. Persons that have been displaced by the storm are being accommodated on the island, with the most recent information from The Bahamas National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) indicating that 895 individuals are being housed across six shelters.

How to Help

One of the best things people can do to help, now more than ever is to visit. The Bahamas is open for business and still delivering the tropical getaway the country is known for. In addition to planning a trip to The Bahamas, those who wish to contribute can find a list of The Bahamas’ verified partners at bahamas.com/relief.

The Seychelles Islands celebrate the annual “Endless Summer” roadshow in CIS region

September 20, 2019 by PressEditor

The Seychelles Tourism Board appeared in full flare for the third edition of its annual “Endless Summer with The Seychelles Islands” events, which took place in Astana and Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Kiev (Ukraine) in August 2019.

The events featured interaction with key partners from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region and presentations of the destination and its partners.

The “Endless Summer” roadshow seized the city of Astana on August 26, 2019 and saw the presence of 45 companies. The events included a tropical breakfast, a presentation of the Seychelles Islands in the luxurious UNO restaurant, followed by a B2B workshop.

At the next stop, Almaty, participants had an opportunity to partake in a workshop with one-one meetings followed by a networking cocktail reception, which took place in “Afisha”, a popular restaurant that was transformed into an exotic paradise, invoking the Seychelles atmosphere.

The following day, the STB team engaged with trade partners during the summer open-air festival in the Garden of VDNH Park, in Kiev, Ukraine, where the participation of 75 agents were recorded.

Taking place in a vintage orangery, the core elements of Seychelles flora blended with the rustic elements of the retro festival, namely its food trucks, scattered beanbags and fairy lights, creating a mesmerising backdrop.

The workshop and teasers were presented inside the orangery and was followed by open-air festival with lounge zones, picnic style tables and sun lounges.

The food stalls also contributed to the Seychelles Islands atmosphere with grill fish, seafood finger food, coconut ice cream, tropical smoothies and lemonades.

These successful events gave the STB team the opportunity to provide the perfect platform for local tour operators to meet the partners from Seychelles, to broaden their knowledge about the destination and discuss prospective collaboration opportunities.

This year in Astana & Almaty we saw participation from 7° South, Pure Escapes, Savoy Resort & Spa Seychelles & Coral Strand Seychelles, Fregate Island Private, Etihad Airways and Fly Dubai. Participants in Kiev included, 7° South, Pure Escapes, Fregate Island Private and Turkish Airlines.

“We are very happy to get such an opportunity to share a part of Seychelles with our dear partners from the CIS region. This region has great potential for Seychelles and our presence continues on such events with the support of the local partners will only help to penetrate the region even further” said the STB representative in Russia and CIS, Ms Olga Demina. “Year after year we record a positive growth from these important markets as Kazakhstan and Ukraine and hope that the interest in Seychelles will only keep growing”.
