October 18, 2019 by PressEditor

The Malta Tourism Authority is delighted to announce the appointment of Tolene Van der Merwe as the tourism board’s new UK and Ireland Director.

Tolene’s new role will focus on leading a London based team to further develop and cultivate partnerships with tour operators, airlines, travel agents and niche specialists as well reaching out to the UK public with PR and marketing initiatives to keep Malta and Gozo on top of mind and holiday destinations of choice for the UK public. Accounting for a quarter of Malta’s tourism arrivals, the UK market is the largest for the destination and Tolene and her team will continue to grow arrival numbers through diversification of on island experiences and strategies.

Tolene began her career in the tourism industry at Exclusive Getaways, the luxury South African operator. Tolene later joined London based tour operator African Affair Travel furthering her specialism in African tourism product before founding Boutique Travel Marketing, where she spent seven years growing the hotel representation company. Tolene joins the Malta Tourism Authority following five years as the Hub Head for South African Tourism for UK and Ireland.

Tolene commented “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Malta Tourism Authority’s UK team. The archipelago has had a fantastic boost in its tourism in the past few years and is now considered to be one of Europe’s hottest destinations for history and culture, LGBT+, gastronomy, diving, and soft adventure travel. With attentions now turning to wellness, city breaks and sustainability, I’m excited to be part of the tourism authority’s increasing success in drawing a variety of travellers to experience all that the islands have to offer”.

Latest numbers show that Malta is on par to match UK visitor arrival figures recorded in 2018.

Commenting on this appointment, MTA’s CMO & Deputy CEO Carlo Micallef said that “MTA is delighted to have secured the services of Tolene van der Merwe to join a strong highly professional team in London and continue building on the success achieved under Peter Vella’s stewardship in the past 4 years. Malta’s tourism industry continues to enjoy record performances year on year and MTA together with Ministry for Tourism have a strategy of further market diversification, route connection development, tourism product enhancement as well as Malta brand identity growth to ensure that the success continues.”

Russia to use Fan-IDs (again) as visas for 2020 UEFA Euro Cup visitors

April 23, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Upper house of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, have passed on Monday a bill allowing foreign tourists with Fan-IDs to travel to Russia without entry visas for matches of the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup.

Last week, the bill was passed in the third and final reading by lawmakers from the State Duma, the parliament’s lower house, and following today’s approval by the senators, it must be signed into law by the Russian president.

“Within the period, which begins 14 days prior to the first match of the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup in Saint Petersburg and ends on the day of the last match [in St. Petersburg], the entrance to Russia for foreign citizens and stateless persons, who come to Russia to watch 2020 UEFA Euro Cup matches, will not require issuance of visas based on identification documents,” according to the explanatory note.

Addressing a government’s session in mid-March, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that the country planned “to employ the same mechanism we used in the past regarding the issuance and operational rules of Fan-IDs.”

Russia came up for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with an innovation, which was the so-called Fan-ID and was required for all ticketholders. This innovation was successfully tested during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia and earned high marks from the world’s governing football body of FIFA.

The Fan-ID played an important security role during the major football tournament in Russia as it granted admittance to the stadiums and also served as visa for foreign visitors to enter the country.

A Fan-ID holder was allowed to enter the country without having a Russian visa and stay for the duration of the global football tournament. Fan-IDs were obligatory, in addition to purchased tickets, in order to attend matches of the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia.

2020 UEFA Euro Cup

The matches of the 2020 Euro Cup will be held at stadiums in 12 different cities across Europe, namely in London (England), Munich (Germany), Rome (Italy), Baku (Azerbaijan), Saint Petersburg (Russia), Bucharest (Romania), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Dublin (Ireland), Bilbao (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Glasgow (Scotland) and Copenhagen (Denmark).

Russia’s second largest city of St. Petersburg was granted the right to host three group stage matches and one of the quarterfinals of the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup.

The decision to hold the 2020 Euro Cup, which will be celebrating its 60th anniversary that year, in various European countries instead of in one or two hosting countries was made at the UEFA Executive Committee’s meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on December 6, 2012.

A total of 24 national football teams will be playing in the final tournament of the 2020 Euro Cup. All 55 UEFA national member teams, including 12 teams from the hosting countries, will have to play in the qualifying matches to vie for the berth in the final 24-team lineup of the quadrennial European football championship.

It is possible that some of the national teams from the hosting countries of the 2020 Euro Cup will not be playing on home soil in case they fail to clear the qualifying stage.

The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi welcomes team of Epicurean Authorities

April 15, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi announced the appointment of two new leaders who will work in tandem to heighten the dining experiences that The Andaman have to offer. As newly-appointed Epicurean Authorities of The Andaman, Quinn Pu and Stefano Micocci aim to bring global collectors from all walks of life an epicurean journey worth adding on to their collection of memories.

Quinn Pu, a Chinese national, was appointed as the new Director of Food and Beverage. With a plate full of both hotel and resort experiences in Food and Beverage, Quinn will oversee and lead the whole Food and Beverage department within the resort while driving revenue growth and guest satisfaction, maintaining The Andaman’s 6 unique dining venues and bars as one of Langkawi’s leading venues to have an exceptional meal.

With over 15 years of working experience, Quinn had had experiences in the United States, Ireland and various location in his homeland, China before being appointed to open The Ritz-Carlton in Jiuzhaigou, China in 2017, where he was in-charge of leading the pre-opening F&B team in the mountain resort.

The Andaman marks Quinn’s first assignment in Malaysia. “Malaysia is quite popular in China and I am most excited about the food scene. I look forward to see how the unique food culture can inspire me, not just for my work but in life as well,” says Quinn.

Hailing from Italy, Stefano Micocci was recently appointed as the Executive Chef of The Andaman. With 20 years of culinary experience, Stefano started his culinary journey around various regions of Italy before venturing to the Middle East and subsequently to Malaysia.

“Malaysian cuisine is unique. What attracts me is how each dish has a unique blend of different spices with distinctive flavors that explode in your mouth,” say Chef Stefano. “Every dish also has a story behind it and I find that inspiring. With a story, comes characters and emotions – making people feel as they eat, and that is what I look for when I am creating a new recipe.”

“The Andaman has always been a front-runner in innovative dining on the island, setting benchmarks and best practices in both curating memorable experiences as well as sustainability,” says Carlos Tarrero, General Manager of The Andaman. “With these new Epicurean Authorities on board, I am confident that we will be able to push the boundaries even further in being the pioneer on the island.”

The Andaman raised the bar in unique sustainable dining when the resort’s signature seafood restaurant Jala was launched in 2013. With its one-of-a-kind sand-flooring, rustic design and natural ambience, Jala enables guests to take in the beauty of nature whilst enjoying fresh seafood dishes specially curated by culinary maestros in Jala, complemented by exceptional Malaysian hospitality.

To ensure the freshest catches arrives daily on the shores of The Andaman, Jala has also partnered with the local fishermen, thus assisting Langkawi’s small businesses. Every afternoon, guests can look forward to walk down the beach to watch the chefs of Jala in action dealing and negotiating with local fishermen on the purchases of fresh seafood.

Travel Leaders Network embarks upon major international expansion

April 10, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Travel Leaders Network, North America’s largest travel agency organization, in partnership with sister company Travel Leaders Corporate, has embarked upon a large-scale international expansion program to expand opportunities and provide enhanced service to corporate customers. To date, 40 major travel agencies from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia have become new members of Travel Leaders Network. Many more agencies are expected to join over the coming months.

“We are creating a network of agencies that will serve as connective tissue enabling us to respond to larger opportunities both regionally and internationally,” said Roger E. Block, CTC, President of Travel Leaders Network. “These agencies, now backed by the scale, technology and tools available through Travel Leaders, are positioned to provide an even more customized, personalized and superior level of service to existing and new clients within their respective geographies.”

New members, some of which are among the largest corporate travel agencies in their countries, join several existing international members of Travel Leaders Network. Combined, the network now has agency representation in nearly 50 countries. Additionally, Travel Leaders Group agencies across the U.S., Canada, the UK and Mexico, inclusive of CTS (Corporate Travel Services), will play a significant role in the international expansion.

“Our plan is to sign one exclusive Travel Leaders representative in key countries around the globe. We are engaging partners who can offer a full portfolio of corporate, leisure and events services and are recognized in their country and by their peers as service-oriented, successful agencies,” said Block.

The newly-joined international members will have access to Travel Leaders’ comprehensive suite of resources. Those include online booking tools, a wide variety of marketing programs, the company’s extensive hotel program, including its highly curated SELECT Hotels & Resorts Program, international destination company (DMC) network and access to a vast array of education and training resources. Additionally, members will be able to support both international accounts and local customers through Travel Leaders’ end-to-end technology suite that provides profile management, online trip authorization, data consolidation and analytics, meetings technology and customer reporting tools. International partners will also have access to some of the marquee leisure programs offered by Travel Leaders Network.

“This expansion program is transforming both Travel Leaders Network and Travel Leaders Corporate into more robust international players with stronger abilities and reach enabling true multi-national account management based upon a highly personalized service model on an international scale,” said Gabe Rizzi, President of Travel Leaders Corporate. “Clients will be serviced by local agencies who are leaders in their markets providing premium corporate travel services supported by a vast array of technology. These innovative agencies are now backed by one of the largest travel agency networks in the world. We’re not a call center operation and neither are they. That’s our sweet spot and our competitive difference.”

Member support will be provided on a regional basis with key positions located in each region, including Latin America; Europe, the Middle East and Africa; and Asia Pacific. “We have hired regional sales professionals in the areas of sales, operations, technology and account management to create a more localized support structure to best serve the needs of our international members,” Rizzi added.

5 places to visit on your bucket list

April 1, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

While everyone’s ultimate travel bucket list is different, there are certain destinations that really shouldn’t be missed, from American and Canadian destinations to places around the world, including these.

Ireland

The Emerald Isle is truly magical, even if leprechauns aren’t real, or are they? You can visit the Leprechaun Museum in Dublin to find out, but the highlight here is the scenery, and the castles, the music, the people. Visit ancient sites like Newgrange, even older than Stonehenge, constructed in 3200 BC, making it older than even the Great Pyramids of Giza too. Haunting castles and castle ruins dot the lush, green landscape, and there are beautiful beaches along the rugged coasts. Some of your favorite times might be found in the pubs, many of which host live music almost every night of the week, along with plenty of Guinness and craic.

Nashville, Tennessee

Music lovers especially should visit Nashville. Known as the “Music City,” it’s home to hundreds of live music venues that draw well-known names as well as up-and-coming artists. And, while you’ll find plenty of country, that’s not all. Its most famous venue is Grand Ole Opry, and at the historic Ryman Auditorium, visitors can even attend a live recording. The city also boasts a booming rock scene, with venues big and small, including The Basement, an intimate venue hosting everything from metal to acoustic shows.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

America’s top attraction with foreign visitors, the Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Up to 18 miles wide, a mile deep and 227 miles long, the canyon walls are made up of a stunning array of colors and erosional forms, made even more impressive at sunrise and sunset. You’ll want to do more than peer over the edge, though. You can enjoy an unforgettable adventure by riding a mule to the bottom, or head out to explore one of its more remote regions, making the long but rewarding trek to gaze at one of the world’s most breathtaking sights, Havasu Falls.

Antarctica

The ultimate bucket list destination, when your vessel gets through the waters of Orne Harbor, you’ll be welcomed by hundreds of squawking penguins tending their young in a desolate frozen landscape where iceberg peaks soar as much as 300 feet from of the sea. Minke and humpback whales, fur and leopard seals, are just a few of the other creatures you’re likely to encounter in one of the world’s last true frontiers.

Iceland

While its name might lead you to believe that it’s all about icy landscapes here, it’s anything but. The winters are similar to what you’d experience in major cities on America’s east coast, and the summer months are incredible with countless roaring waterfalls and hot springs in an otherworldly place of epic fairytale proportions. Soak in the legendary Blue Lagoon with its milky blue mineral-rich waters, or head to one of the more remote hot springs where you can soak in seclusion.

Tourism Ireland: Ensuring Ireland is “Top Of Mind”

March 27, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The second in a series of four Tourism Ireland workshops was held that will take place in France during 2019 to highlight ease of access from France to Ireland and deliver more business to Ireland’s regions in the off-peak season. The first workshop took place in Toulouse in January, with other workshops planned to take place in Lyon and Nice in the coming months.

Tourism businesses from the island of Ireland and France came together in Bordeaux this week to take part in a B2B workshop and networking event organized by Tourism Ireland. The businesses met with local travel agents to inform and educate them about the island of Ireland and, in particular, its lesser-known attractions and hidden gems.

Tourism Ireland’s manager for Southern Europe, Monica MacLaverty, commented, “Our workshop and networking event was an excellent opportunity to meet, and do business with, travel agents in Bordeaux, ensuring that the island of Ireland is ‘top of mind’ for the travel agents this year when recommending and booking holidays for their clients.

“With Aer Lingus and Ryanair flights from Dublin to Bordeaux, our aim is to highlight ease of access to Ireland for people living in this part of France. We are also aiming to drive growth to the regions and to encourage French holidaymakers to travel to Ireland in the shoulder season months.”

Seychelles welcomes another set of hospitality professionals

March 25, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The tourism industry of Seychelles, the country’s leading economic pillar, will greatly benefit as it welcomes home 11 hospitality professionals, following the completion of their studies in Ireland.

The sixth cohort of Seychellois student at the Shannon College graduated on March 17, 2019, a ceremony that took place in the presence of Seychelles’ Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Ports & Marine Mr. Didier Dogley.

Also present at the graduation ceremony were Mr. Flavien Joubert, the Principal of the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA), Mr. Claude Narin, the Patron of STA, Mr. Terence Crea of the NHRDC, parents and family members of the students.

Minister Dogley said it is the government’s vision to have the hospitality industry in Seychelles led by Seychellois professionals.

“During the last 10 years the necessary resources and support systems have been put into place to enable this to happen. Today we have reached another important milestone with the sixth cohort graduating with sterling results. All efforts will continue to be made for them to remain in the industry and prosper,” said Mr. Dogley.

The management of the school had only praise for the Seychellois students, who have performed very well and have been exemplary as students.

The twinning program between the Seychelles Tourism Academy and the Shannon College started in 2008. Since its inception, 65 students have graduated, with most of the young professionals still actively working in the industry.

The program, which is a 5 years Degree program, consist of three years training at Higher Diploma level at the STA plus two years degree training at Shannon College. The College forms part of the National University of Ireland.

During the visit to the college, the Seychelles delegation met and discuss a number of issues with the group of students currently following the course at the college. Generally, Seychellois students are very satisfied with the program and the quality of student life offered by the college.

It was also a great opportunity for the delegation to meet with the management of the college. Renewal of the five-year collaborative agreement between the two institutions was discussed, as the current one is ending.

The five-year strategic plan of the Seychelles Tourism Academy was also a topic of conversation between the officials present during the meeting. With the new plan, the academy hopes to chart a clear road map for the further development as an institution of excellence.

A networking cocktail was organised at the start of the evening, in each city, allowing the local partners to go around and chat to the agents before taking them on a journey of the amazing Seychelles islands and its products.

Some lucky winners also won a week’s holiday in the Seychelles sponsored by the various hotel partners represented on the tour.

Representing Coco de Mer hotel & Black Parrot suites was Mr. Ash Behari, Crystal cruises saw the presence of Mr. Jon Schofield, from Denis Island & Carana Beach, Ms. Bessie Etienne, The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach was represented by Mr. Sherif El Mansoury.

Ms. Rizwana Hamayun represented Kempinksi Seychelles, Mr. Gerhard Louw was from Maia & Paradise Sun and representing The Hilton Seychelles hotels were Ms. Devi Pentamah and Mr. Anthony Smith.

Ms. Vel mentioned her satisfaction to see that the destination remains very popular on the UK market; she commended the active participation of the Tour Operators and Travel Agents present at the events.

“Once again this year we had an amazing turn out of agents wanting to broaden their knowledge of our destination,” said Ms. Vel.

‘Seychelles Discovered Roadshow’ is held twice annually in March and October. The next edition for 2019 will be held between October 28 to October 31.

Perfect Dublin Day Trip

August 30, 2018 by Newswire

Choosing the perfect day trip can make or break a vacation, the beautiful seaside village of Howth (pronounced Hoe-th) checks off all the boxes.  Located just a short 30-minute train ride East of Dublin with trains running every 30 minutes in both directions makes this an easy and very convenient day trip. Without a doubt the perfect day trip from Dublin Ireland!

  • Ease of travel
  • Historical significance
  • An area teeming with wildlife
  • The best seafood in Ireland
  • An Award-Winning Craft Brewery

Located on the northern boundary of Dublin Bay on the peninsula of Howth Head with convenient access to the cold waters of the Irish Sea creates the perfect mix to make Howth the largest fishing harbor in Ireland.  Fresh seafood spawns fine restaurants and Irelands Sea Food Festivals provides a description of 6 of their favorites in their Essential Guide: Six Amazing Seafood Restaurants in Howth including Octopussy’s Seafood Tapas Bar,  The Brass Monkey,  Abbey Tavern, The Oar House, Aqua Restaurant and King Sitric.  Certainly, a daunting task to explore on your own, but I have a better idea!  What’s the best way to explore this beautiful seaside village, you ask?  Free Walking Tours Howth is the way to go, they offer several tours but the “foodie” and “beer lover” in me is drawn to their Craft Beer & Seafood Trail.  We’ll visit Howth’s legendary Bloody Stream Pub, sampling craft beers from the area as we listen to ancient tales of Vikings, Danes, and Pirates too. The Bloody Stream Pub is a traditional Irish bar & seafood restaurant in the heart of Howth village, a hotspot for locals as well as visitors inspired by their live music and friendly atmosphere. The Craft Beer & Seafood Trail continues to Howth harbor, enjoying the fresh sea air as we watch the fisherman offload their catch.  We’ll visit several area restaurants sampling that delicious catch of Dublin Bay Prawns, Mussels, Oysters, Calamari, and of course Howth’s famous Seafood Chowder. To book your tour please email mark@freewalkingtourshowth.com

Nature lovers will enjoy Ireland’s Eye Ferry offering 2 options.  Trip 1:  Explore the island from the sea watching for a variety of seabirds including, Gannets, Guillemot, Cormorants, Kittiwakes and Sea Gulls. With a bit of luck, you may even see a colony of seals!   Trip 2:  Land on Ireland’s Eye and explore the island at your leisure. Enjoy the stunning views from the top of the island, explore the ruins of a 5th-century monastery, and quietly spy on islands large bird colony.  Ireland’s Eye Ferries is a 4th generation family business offering their boat trips from the West Pier on Howth Harbor. The trip to Ireland’s Eye is only 15 minutes by boat from the mainland, but some say it’s like visiting another planet a total disconnect with the outside world. Trips to and around Ireland’s Eye operate daily from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm weather permitting.  To book a trip please email info@irelandseyeferries.com

If you are a beer lover, and reading this article you must be, you’ll want to include a stop at Hope Brewery on your way back to Dublin.  The Hope Craft Brewery located a short 15-minute walk from the Kilbarrack Train Station, was opened in 2015.  You know the story, 4 school buds sitting around the kitchen table each sharing a passion for beer and business!  Well, they did it, they opened an award-winning brewery, built around 4 core beers plus the addition of several experimental small batch brews! As they say on their website, “Although Hope is our main brand, each beer has its own distinct name, story, and taste experience.  Discover our stories! Discover our Beers!  Hope. Dublin brewed craft beer with character”.  Who doesn’t enjoy a good story, not to mention award-winning beer! To book a brewery tour please email jeanne@hopebeer.ie or visit https://hopebeer.ie/

Certainly, an extraordinary day trip to Howth, with friendly locals, entertaining guides, awe-inspiring wildlife, delicious seafood, and phenomenal beer!  A busy experience driven day that’s quite manageable with everything located just off the DART train line. From Hope, it’s just a short walk to the station followed by 15 minutes by train and we are back in Dublin City Center.  For tomorrow is another day in Dublin, with much to explore and so much more to experience!

The Beer-Centric Traveler writes for Play Harder Tours… Please email Bill@playhardertours.com and start your travel planning today! For a complete list of recommendations please email with “Howth” on the subject line.  I’d love to hear your suggestions too.
