ATTES: Changing the Face of Africa together with the African Tourism Board

May 14, 2019 by PressEditor

The African Tourism Board is planning to partner with Africa’s Trade, Transport and Energy Summit  (ATTES) to make sure travel and tourism are not overlooked by the largest summit ever held in Africa.

Africa, the world’s second-largest continent in size and population, has a wealth of biodiversity and natural resources, which has flown under the radar when it comes to global investments. That stands to change with Africa’s Trade, Transport and Energy Summit (ATTES), to be hosted in Accra, Ghana from 13–15 November 2019. ATTES is being organized by ALPHA Ports Limited, the Irish-registered trading name of African Logistics Port Hub Association (ALPHA).

Set in Accra’s International Conference Center, ATTES will be three days of investment workshops, trade exhibitions, and conferences. This milestone event will serve as a melting pot for high-profile investors, venture capitalists and local entrepreneurs to connect and exchange ideas. Attendance of top-tier talent and leadership from government and private sectors – representing high-demand fields such as renewable energy, agribusiness, telecommunications, transport, blockchain and much more – will provide unique opportunities for networking and forging connections.

The summit will kick off with a meet-and-greet, followed by a ribbon cutting and welcome address from Ghana’s Honourable Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Ahenkorah. Following will be an intensive itinerary of workshops in blockchain, energy, mining, fintech and agritech. Attendees will have the opportunity to synergize with distinguished investors and get exclusive insights from influential policymakers, with a focus on exchanging business initiatives and exploring joint ventures.

Keynote panels will provide a podium for experts to share insights into Africa’s investment opportunities. Meanwhile, a large exhibition space will be available, where attendees can network and collaborate. The event will culminate in an awards ceremony for noteworthy guests and speakers.

CEO and Managing Director of ALPHA Ports, Kingsley Ekweariri, communicates his excitement about the Summit:

“We believe in Africa. We believe in its vast opportunities that have yet to be optimally exploited to their full potential to transform the lives of people. There is so much that Africa has, and we are optimistic that, with investors coming to the Summit to interface with high-level government officials, deals shall be concluded and investment will consequently follow thereby. Africa is the opportunity continent, and no one investor should miss it in their growth trajectory strategy room.”

With growing interest in Africa’s investment potential, ATTES positions itself as a watershed event, poised to revolutionize how the world views Africa, as the “opportunity continent” of dynamic energy, economic power, and untapped resources. ATTES will demonstrate Africa’s determination to show the world a new face, turning its potential to actuality.

Moving forward, ATTES will dedicate itself to inviting and catalyzing investment in Africa long-term and will hold summits in Singapore, South America, India, and Europe in the coming years.

Why Ghana?

Ghana in West Africa exemplifies all these qualities that ATTES intends to showcase: plentiful natural resources, diverse terrain and thriving industries ranging from trade to manufacturing to cybernetics. Ghana’s powerhouse economy and leadership in infrastructure development – including Africa’s second nuclear power plant and multiple hydroelectric dams – make it a shining example of the potential waiting to be unlocked in similar African countries.

Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Ahenkorah, expresses optimism for the role ATTES will play, and where it will lead:

“Having such a distinguished group of people in our capital is a very welcome development, coming at a time when a spotlight is being shone on Africa’s new status as a continent to be reckoned with in terms of what it offers investors and potential partners from all over the world. The ATTES summit is just the sort of bold initiative our country and our continent needs as Africa reaches a new phase in its commercial and industrial development, with new markets opening up and heightened demands… This hugely important event will see an unprecedented meeting of minds and a pooling of ideas that will have a vital influence on our future well-being.”

Ghana Tourism makes money on selfies

April 21, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Ghana Tourism is a big business and full of surprises. This is also true for  Mr Guru, Ghanaian,  a comedian who went to Facebook after being asked to pay GH¢4.00 , what is a little less than a US-Dollar when he wanted to take a photo when crossing Kwame Nkrumah bridge.

In his Facebook message he addressed the Ghana President: “Your Excellency Mr. President, this is the receipt given to me today 19th April 2019 at Adomi bridge as a fee for pictures I wanted to take as a Ghanaian on the bridge Kwame Nkrumah built and which Mahama renovated.

The people in charge told me that the order is from the President, that even if you want to take selfie it’s 2gh per person. Your Excellency if indeed you authorized this God forsaken tax then am disappointed in you. How much do Ghanaians pay when they travel to Dubai, China, American, etc yet those countries are 100× developed. Even China’s world’s longest 30 miles sea bridge to Hong Kong is free, what is happening? What a shame!!!!

It’s said; there is no free lunch anywhere. Henceforth, you may have a good phone with a good front camera but you may have to pay between GH¢2.00 and GH¢4.00 to pose for a picture on Kwame Nkrumah’s Adomi Bridge.

One of the longest bridge on the Volta Lake in Ghana built some decades ago was recently renovated to avert any possible danger to the lives of motorists.

The government instituted the levy as a measure to rake in some revenue to sustain its numerous projects hence a levy on the bridge.

Tourists have taken to social media to cry over the levies expressing disappointment at the move by government.

Johannes Nartey Mr Guru, Ghanaian comedian took to Facebook  to lament after being asked to pay GH¢4.00

African Tourism Board Launch was a success: A new era just started for African Travel & Tourism

April 12, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The two arms of the African Tourism Board had their official launch event yesterday at the Cape Town International Convention Center Conference Theatre during World Tavel Market Africa.

The African Tourism Board Association and the African Tourism Board Marketing Association are joining under the brand African Tourism Board and are now seen as a new Chapter on how Africa becomes one tourism destination. Both arms have access to the “ATB friends of the media group”, and are coordinating activities and events whenever possible.

The Association is fully under African Leadership. It’s based in South Africa, and is forming an initial group of directors to work with newly appointed President Alain St. Ange from Seychelles.

On his team of supporters are Cuthbert Ncube, Regional Vice-Chair UNWTO Affiliate Membership and Chief Executive Director Kwela Fleet Management. The Hon. Minister or Tourism for the Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, Kwakye Donker, CEO African Tourism Partners in Ghana and South Africa, Francoise Kameni Lele, AFBS Cameron, the Hon. Minister Madam Memunatu B. Pratt, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for Sierra Leone, among many others.

African Tourism Board Marketing Association is based in the United States and is providing overseas marketing support for Africa under the leadership of Juergen Steinmetz of the eTN Group in Hawaii, USA and Doris Woerfel in Pretoria, South Africa. Together with a team of global supporters, the marketing arm of ATB will explore new opportunities and cost-sharing projects for inbound tourism for the African Continent.

As a start at the ATB launch last night Dov Kalmann explained the potential of travelers from Israel for Africa and introduced the new African Tourism Board office in Tel Aviv.

Arjun Mukund from Delhi, India said 1.2 billion Indians are current and future potential travelers and he wanted to make sure the African Tourism Board in India will help to achieve growing interest for Indian tourists.

Additional ATB offices are planned in the United States and Germany to start with.

Chairman Juergen Steinmetz explained: “Sharing resources, going after potential niche markets, sharing costs and giving both destinations and stakeholders representation in key markets will help to raise awareness for the African continent. We like to open a window for large, medium and small businesses in a sustainable way.”

Newly appointed CEO Doris Woerfel sees huge potential for Africa from China and will be concentrating to build a broad membership base in Africa for ATB.

The launch was an action-packed event in Capetown hosted by Carol Weaving, Managing Director of Reed Exhibition Africa. She pledged the support of the World Travel Market for African Tourism Board.

Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy supported the need for an African Tourism Board in his welcome remark.

The highlight of the event was a 30-minute presentation by Dr. Peter Tarlow on security and safety. There is no tourism without security, he said in an engaging session last night. Dr. Tarlow was appointed as the new Travel & Security advisor for African Tourism Board Marketing Association. He is leading safertourism.com

The launch started with a dinner sponsored by Tony Smith of the HongKong based iFREE Group . The group also provided free ATB sim cards to everyone attending.

Professor Geoffrey Lipman introduced the African Lung initiative by video.

2nd annual Africa Business and MICE Tourism Master Class to be held in Johannesburg this June

April 3, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The 2nd edition of the Africa Business and MICE Master Class will be held in Johannesburg at the BDO South Africa offices from June 10-12, 2019. The African Tourism Board is a supporting partner for this event. This program will grant industry professionals and practitioners from across Africa an opportunity to learn from renowned industry experts, connect with like-minded individuals and benefit from first-hand advice on how to advance growth in their organisations, businesses and destinations. This class will be presented by Africa Tourism Partners and its lead strategic partners, BDO South Africa and South Africa Conference Association Industry (SAACI). “Collaboration is integral to the growth of the MICE industry across Africa. BDO is proud to be associated with the Africa MICE Masterclass program where not only newcomers benefit from the expertise of established industry players, but the experts also learn from each other,” highlights Christelle Grohmann, Director, BDO Advisory. “We look forward to hosting you from June 10-12 at our office in Johannesburg,” she adds.

This year’s program has been designed in response to the high interest and recognition that the 2018 Africa Business and MICE Master Class received, making it a sought-after Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Capacity Building program among practitioners and professionals. The inaugural course was held at the same time last year and featured illustrious industry experts and attendees from 14 African countries including Botswana, Ghana, Madagascar, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Swaziland, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. “Many attendees at the Africa MICE Masterclass 2018 voiced their satisfaction with the event indicating that the intimate and interactive format and the depth and range of knowledge of the speakers kept them absorbed throughout. Even the speakers commented on it being a well-rounded learning experience that also benefited them. This is industry learning from industry from real working examples,” states Lee-Anne Bac, Director, BDO Advisory & Masterclass 2018 Attendee.

Considering the increased number of African exhibitors and buyers who participated at the 2019 Meetings Africa held in February this year, it is apparent that more countries, tourism boards, convention bureaus, conference facilities, professional conference organizers and the entire African Business and MICE Tourism community now appreciate the significance of the sector. Speaking at the 2019 Meetings Africa, South Africa Minister of Tourism, Mr. Derek Hanekom stated that Business Tourism has earned its place at the economic table. He also revealed that the sector earned R71 billion revenue and contributed R115 billion to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This buttresses the sector’s relevance in African economies.

The Master Class is a two-and-a-half day CPD program designed with a variety of theory and practical sessions and the opportunity for further engagement in the form of business-to-business meetings. It will be conducted in conjunction with BDO South Africa, and key industry associations, including SAACI. The course is delivered by faculty experts through a practical and interactive Action-Learning methodology. This approach allows attendees to gain fresh industry insights and global best practices, learn from industry experts and connect with executives from across the continent.

To register, for Business-to-Business or sponsorship opportunities please contact: Ms. Aretha Nozipho Bohlela at: [email protected] or +27 81 303 7030.

Ghana Tourism over Mining? Should Atewa Forest Reserve be a National Park?

March 31, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

In Ghana, a Rocha Ghana and Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape (CCLA), both non-governmental organizations (NGOs), have urged the government to designate the Atewa Forest Reserve as a national park, to generate additional income for the country.

The NGOs asked the government to review its stance of allowing mining in the Atewa Forest, considering its importance to the livelihood of humans and biodiversity.

Mr. Oteng Adjei, the Public Relations Officer, CCAL, made the call at a press conference on Friday in Accra.

Mr. Adjei said that Atewa Forest is the source of three rivers, Densu, Ayensu and Birim, and there was the need to protect the reserve from any activity that could put these rivers at risk.

He asked the government to consider the environmental impact above temporary economic conditions, regarding mining in the forest reserve.

Mr. Adjei noted that activities in forest reserves in the Eastern and Western regions of the country are creating serious environmental problems.

He said it was difficult to deal with miners because they operated in thick forest reserves.

Mr. Adjei cautioned government against allocating forest reserves for mining activities because it contributed to the depletion of Ghana’s forest cover.

“We must relinquish the stranglehold on the Atewa Forest and allow for development partners waiting anxiously to turn the reserve into an eco-tourism attraction that will rake in the quantum of money the government is claiming bauxite mining will bring and even bring more in a sustainable way,” he said.

About the African Tourism Board: Top important according to an African American Tourism Expert

March 28, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Drew Barrett, a Chicago based African American tourism expert and consultant, thinks the newly founded African Tourism Board(ATB) is very important and potentially valuable to the nations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

ATB will celebrate its official launch on April 11 during the World Travel Market in Cape Town and has moved to a world of attention. ( www.

The nations of Sub-Saharan Africa are very hungry for and in need of growth of their inbound international tourism business. Most, however, have a steep learning curve, over which they must overcome to achieve any measurable incremental results. Most are steeped in best practices of a bygone error of global tourism marketing if they are doing anything at all. Most are not.

Nations like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa have significant global brand equity for leisure tourism. Others like Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana and again South Africa; are a compelling destination for business tourism. Yet on the extreme opposite end of the attractiveness spectrum others, due to conflict and a total lack of internal security are not in the running.

All nations of Sub-Saharan Africa with any viable tourism product are seeking to up their game, but have to reconcile a penchant, if not add to investing, and in many cases, mis-investing in energy, data +telecommunicationss, and transportation infrastructure to achieve modern global standards. They are missing there real opportunity.

The most readily available economic growth engine for all nations of Sub-Saharan Africa is their adventure, art, community, cultural, ecological (flora + fauna) and handicraft tourism products; in which they should invest in both development and marketing. The immense profit potential of such well planned and implemented investments, will return profits; which will pay for everything else.

I have two Sub-Saharan African nations, Kenya and South Africa, digress from World Class Tourism Marketers, not having a clue as to what to do; because they forsake a focus on their indigenous roots, attempting to promote being global business meeting and conference destinations; a playing field on which they cannot compete, for so many reasons.

I have just last week, submitted a comprehensive, preliminary strategic tactical concept proposal to a Northwestern Sub Saharan nation. I had developed similar proposals for three other nations. In each case, I have been working with someone who has strong connections to government decision makers; but not with any preconceived disposition toward action. In the most recent case, my contact is a division of the Ministry of Tourism.

Nigeria, a few years ago, invested in the development of a Culture and Music festival which it could market globally. The problem with some post colonial nations is, they are addicted to seeking the help of postcolonial consultant intermediaries of European and North American multinationals, for expertise. The problem is those consultants do not have the expertise necessary to enable the success of such an undertaking.

The consensus is to invest in building grand hotels, great roads, and transportation; and tourists will come. Wrong, they just end up with choking foreign debt and no tourist.

Again, the African Tourism Board, can be the way forward for the Nations of Sub Saharan Africa to be able to monetize their most readily available natural resource, as previously stated.

African Tourism Board brings to those nations both internal and external subject matter experts, professional practitioners, industry resources and massive implementation capabilities; in a unified platform which can teach the leadership of the nations of Sub Saharan Africa how to successfully market their destinations and tourism assets, to the billions of ready, willing and able international tourist.
