SB Architects Celebrates Successful Bike to Hope Cycle and Year of Giving

December 3, 2019 by PressEditor

This fall, SB Architects, an international architecture firm renowned for localizing the look and feel of its hospitality, residential and commercial projects, co-sponsored and participated in the 8th Annual Bike to Hope cycle, an event benefitting City of Hope, which was recently named the leading cancer center in the West by US News & World Report and is supported by the Northern California Real Estate and Construction Council. For the fifth consecutive year, SB Architects assembled a team of riders from its Miami and San Francisco offices to complete the Bike to Hope cycle, helping to raise $271,000 dollars to support the center’s research and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, surpassing the annual fundraising goal of $200,000. Reflecting on the success of this charity event, which forged new community relationships, unified teams, and aligned with the firm’s core values of health and wellness, SB Architects will continue to direct both its design ethos and philanthropic efforts toward addressing the broader social and cultural needs of communities in 2020.

“Just as compassion is at the heart of City of Hope’s approach and the driving force behind their research, SB Architects carries the empathy behind human-centric design to areas where we can make a significant impact in bettering lives,” said Bruce Wright, Vice President and Principal. “We believe in better-connecting architects to their communities and extending our passion as designers of experience into supporting crucial causes related to wellness, education, and environmental concerns.”

From Immersing Guests in Nature to Immersive Expressions of Philanthropy

Over the 60 years that SB Architects has been in practice, its portfolio has reflected the integration of sustainable design with wellness amenities for the overall health of the user, project, and environment, and is largely focused on connecting guests with nature, whether designing resort rooms that give each guest an ocean view, or arrival experiences and spaces that blur lines between inside and outside.

Experienced in creating bonds between properties and the natural environment, and connecting properties and people through authentic experiences, SB Architects is sensitive to the impact that natural disasters have on land and communities. When Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, wiping out communities and displacing thousands in an area near the firm’s  renovation of Malliouhana Resort in Anguilla, and Baha Mar, a large-scale resort where the firm designed three restaurants, including the Costa Restaurant at the Rosewood Baha Mar, the firm supported the efforts of “boots on the ground” charities such as World Central Kitchen, which in the two weeks following the hurricane served more than 250,000 meals to survivors, and All Hands and Hearts Response, an organization dedicated to re-building and constructing new communities after disaster strikes. In addition to donating to these organizations, members of SB Architects’ Miami office donated items to those affected by the hurricane’s ongoing devastation.

“We are committed to helping to protect the natural beauty, culture and people in areas that have granted us such incredible opportunities,” said SB Architects President and Principal Scott Lee. “The root of the word ‘philanthropy,’ means ‘love of mankind,’ and SB Architects has great concern and care for both the surrounding communities and natural environs of our projects.”

In response to the recent Kincade Fire, which impacted members of the Healdsburg community where SB Architects is designing the experience-driven mixed-use project, Mill District, the design firm’s San Francisco office members joined a “Unity and Community” ride, which raised recovery funds for those displaced by the California wildfires. At Mill District, SB Architects is transforming the former Nu Forest lumber mill site into a destination paying homage to Healdsburg’s renowned, culinary and wellness features. The firm’s participation in the cycle reflects how its hands-on approach in site-sensitive projects and focus on integrating wellness elements into them align with its community-based recovery efforts.

Concern for Nurturing and Enriching a Sense of Community and Home

In designing and planning urban mixed-use communities – from a pedestrian-friendly district at the seminal San Jose project Santana Row, to the urban mixed-use destination Miami Design District and FATVillage in Fort Lauderdale, SB Architects has helped to make work, living, shopping, transportation and green spaces more integrated and easily accessible; this practice of district stewardship has instilled in the firm a heightened sensitivity to local values and awareness of the socio-economic shifts that impact master planning and design. With a dually local and global perspective, the firm supports causes such as Habitat for Humanity, a world-wide organization acting locally to ensure that people have a safe, affordable place to live and access to things they need to thrive.

Investing in Passion Projects That Serve Public Interest and Deepen Firm Expertise

In addition to its active participation in charity events and relief efforts, SB Architects has integrated pro-bono work into its practice, creating visions for new builds and restoration projects that reflect its values of innovation, cultural enrichment and environmental conservation. One such project involves the restoration of a wellness-focused center destroyed by wildfires in 2017. Slated to open in 2020, the new center is being designed by SB Architects to reflect the simplicity and untouched beauty of nature. Such pro-bono projects create places of sanctuary that positively impact visitors, and also strengthen the firm’s expertise in capturing the history and future of a place; in promoting community and wellness through design; and in creating design supportive of the surrounding landscape and nurturing and enriching to the guest experience.

Building the Next Generation of Giving and Forward-Thinking Architects

SB Architects’ San Francisco and Miami offices support the architects of the future through long-term relationships with schools and community organizations. For 13 years, SB Architects’ San Francisco office has hosted the Town School for Boy’s third-grade class for discussions and hands-on activities that engage them in the design process. For the 6th consecutive year, SB Architects’ Miami office has partnered with KAPOW (Kids and the power of work) to host a group of curious students for a morning of architecture and discovery. This past year, Southside Elementary School 5th graders learned how to use materials that would otherwise be considered refuse to build a model of their dream playhouse. Teaching youth how to explore opportunities, identify problems, and find solutions for them by collaborating with others, SB Architects shares its passion for human-centric design and inspires a new generation of architects to help transform communities, contribute to their well-being, and heal the environment.

About SB Architects

With nearly 60 years of continuous practice, SB Architects has established a world-wide reputation for excellence in the planning and design of large-scale hotels, resorts, destination resort communities, and all associated resort amenities, as well as large-scale multi-family residential and urban mixed-use projects. The dedicated staff in the firm’s San Francisco, Miami, Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh offices successfully merge six decades of experience with the energy, drive and dedication of a second generation of partners. Lennox Hotels to opens its first US property this summer

April 11, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

A new modern hotel, combining contemporary design with original Art Deco design, is on the horizon in South Florida hotspot, Miami Beach. Lennox Hotel Miami Beach will be a bold luxury boutique property offering stylish accommodation and an authentic Miami experience.

Located in what was once the Peter Miller Hotel, the property is a protected building in heart of the area’s Historic District. Lennox Hotels has undertaken a complete transformation of the building, maintaining its legacy by retaining its original Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival architectural style exterior and transforming it into a living landmark.

The hotel – located on Miami’s iconic Collins Avenue – will offer 119 contemporary guestrooms, each unique in keeping with the original form of the building. The rooms are enhanced by natural elements, handcrafted furnishings, and eco-friendly and upcycled materials meticulously curated by acclaimed Argentinian interior designer Juan Ciavarella. Soft neutral tones and unique textiles combine in rooms that will range in categories from Terrace Poolside with direct pool access, to Balcony King with private balcony overlooking the colourful streets of Miami Beach.

At the centre of the property’s four interconnected buildings, a Mediterranean-style courtyard features an intimate swimming pool and poolside bar offering al fresco dining and serving innovative cocktails.

Lennox Hotels is an Argentinian hotel group with properties in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. CEO of Lennox Hotels, Diego Agnelli, said:

“We are thrilled to be expanding the Lennox Hotel brand to the U.S. with the opening of Lennox Hotel Miami Beach. Our reasons for choosing this area were as much because of the area’s vibrancy and liveliness as it was because of the welcoming spirit of its people and the friendliness they express toward travellers. Our vision for Lennox Hotel Miami Beach is to provide a sophisticated and inviting setting for travellers to live an authentic Miami experience, one that not only provides a place to mingle with the locals, but also allows them to feel like locals and enjoy the area, its culture and vivacity through the lens of a local.”

Transforming a historical landmark

The historic structure was designed by architect Russell Pancoast in 1934. Pancoast is known for much of Miami Beach’s most celebrated buildings, including the Surf Club, the Church by the Sea and the Miami Beach Auditorium.
The property has the notable distinction of being among the 300 Miami Beach buildings that were leased by the U.S. Army for the Air Forces Technical Training Command during World War II. The buildings returned to civilian use in 1943 and remained a military property until 1944. The structure is now part of the Historic District.
The transformation of the hotel’s original structure into Lennox Hotel Miami Beach is the work of veteran Miami architect Beilison Gomez.

AIDS/HIV research supported by design community

April 6, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Members of the Design Industries have supported AIDS research since 1984 through the Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA), a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization incorporated in New York State.

DIFFA started as a grassroots organization and today is a national foundation headquartered in New York City with chapters in Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest. The organization also partners with gift and home industries and other organizations throughout the USA. DIFFA and its partners have raised over $44 million for hundreds of HIV/AIDS organizations nationwide providing education and prevention programs that run the gamut from condom distribution and needle exchanges to protection of legal rights and security for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Every March, DIFFA invites local and international designers to take raw space and morph it into a showcase of WOW dining table-top environments. It is co-located with the Architectural Digest Design Show and thousands of designers, architects, buyers, sellers, media and design educators support this unique event held at Pier 92 in Manhattan.

Dining by Design attracts over 40,000 guests who view dining installations by more than 30 designers, architects, manufacturers and brands. Designers include: Black Designs + Artists Guild, Sheila Bridges, Mikel Welch, Stacy Garcia, Damour Drake, Kingston Design Connection, Joshua David Home, Inc. Architecture, Lucina Loya, Patrick Mele for Benjamin Moore, Roric Tobin for Modern Luxury and David Scott Interiors for Roche Bobois and Stonehill Taylor for Ultrafabrics.

Curated Design-Inspired Table-Scapes

  • Patrick Mele for Benjamin Moore

This table-scape celebrates glamour from an earlier decade and another world. It is presented in a contemporary format with a mélange of berry, cream, gold and silver giving the space an airy and spring-like ambiance that enhances the trompe l’oeil details and highlights its creativity.

  • Rockwell Group

This table-scape is inspired by The Peacock Room, James McNeill Whistler’s masterpiece of interior decorative art. The tableau features digital wallcovering and a custom handmade peacock-feather tablecloth, creating an abstract, modern interpretation of luxuriously – decadent space.

  • Stonehill Taylor for Ultrafabrics

“Journey” links nearly 4 decades of research and human achievement in the fight against AIDS. The colors and patterns suggest the body and being, while the swirling, layered centerpiece addresses hope and optimism thanks to ongoing advances in science and technology.

  • Mckenzie Liautaud/Robert Verdi

Inspired by water and the nexus between the river and the sea, jewelry designer @Mckenziel and tastemaker @RobertVerdi present a table-scape that features pearls and their origin. Dinner guests are seated on pearl-like stools at a table set with silver and crystal under the stars.

Auction (Curated)

Dining by Design features a silent auction that presents innovative products, original works of art and unusual, quirky experiences.

  • Infiore Floor Lamp by Estiluz

The lamp was designed by the Lagrania Studio. Fiore means flower in Italian, and this is an original elegant lamp that opens it petals and shines it unique light wherever it is placed. The bi-injected polycarbonate petals provide a two-color lighting effect. A halogen bulb is hidden within and is protected by satinized glass that delivers a warm, pleasant light that presents different tones and color effects.

  • Izmir Filo Table Lamp

This playful table lamp was designed by Andrea Anastasio for Foscarini. The lamp and its cord land casually on a tripod, and on the cord are large, effective glass beads. The Filo Lamp is an artistic masterpiece that will be admired forever.

From airport terminal to glamorous holiday destination: Designer pop-up shop

April 6, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Marie France Van Damme, the Hong Kong-based designer known for her globally influenced line of luxury resort, swim, and ready-to-wear, continues to expand her presence worldwide with the opening of a Paris pop-up shop inside Le Bon Marché on May 1, which will operate through June 1. Best known for her silk caftans and timeless collection of elegant resort wear, Marie France Van Damme’s designs have become a “must-have” for the jet set and those who appreciate a timeless luxury product.

Located on the second floor of Le Bon Marché  (24 Rue de Sevres, 75007 Paris, France) in the Savoir Faire department, the new 100 square-foot pop-up shop will offer Marie France Van Damme’s summer 2019 collection of ‘Dolce Vita’ essentials, including luxe day resort wear, elegant summer dresses and evening wear, glamorous bathing suits, and flowy silk caftans. The pop-up shop will be designed to mimic an airport, complete with a dashboard listing departure flight numbers. Inspired by the legendary Splendido hotel and Hotel du Cap, the installation will transport its clientele to a glamorous beach destination replete with silver coated palm trees, inflatable buoys, and branded metallic beach bags.

Designed by renowned lifestyle curator Marie France Van Damme, the shop is inspired by a concept she calls the MFVD holiday jet-set ‘Jet Pack,’ which represents a selection of featherweight garments designed to pack in a small travel bag that you don’t have to check in. As the designer guides you through her world with the perfect ‘Jet Pack’ this summer, the pieces available in the pop-up shop will take the Marie France Van Damme woman from city to resort and resort to city, and provide the best of both worlds: luxe day resort wear and chic evening looks.

“Packing can be stressful and most people are guilty of stuffing their suitcases full of items they’ll never wear, just in case. The answer is, of course, to think carefully about what to bring, and to buy cleverly. The challenge is getting the right mix, to buy things that slide perfectly from day to night, items that can be dressed up or pared down,” says Marie France Van Damme. “Like me, our customer travels around the world, and she needs to find things that will look beautiful during the day as well as at night; from the beach to a cocktail or dinner in the evening. We are honored to open a pop-up in time for the holiday season in one of the world’s most exclusive luxury shopping destinations.”

Marie France Van Damme’s new Summer 2019 collection is a return to the glamorous roots of resort wear and offers striking essentials, designed to have a wear-anywhere appeal from Portofino to Paris. Signature pieces from the new collection include metallic swimsuits, vaporous cover-ups, silk boubou caftans, and effortless summer dresses.

For the perfect look, the pop-up shop will also offer onsite beach makeup services for customers, and an opportunity to design their own one and only boubou caftan. Customers can choose from a selection in a book, one fabric and one trim, which Marie France Van Damme will then produce in her atelier. Customers who purchase the limited-edition caftan can enter a raffle to win a two-night stay at a One&Only Resort. To celebrate the opening, the store will host a series of special events.
