Fraport Traffic Figures – November 2022: High Passenger Demand Marks Start of Winter Schedule

December 13, 2022 by PressEditor

With the start of the winter flight schedule, business travel experienced a noticeable rebound at Germany’s largest aviation hub.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed some 4.1 million passengers in November 2022, an increase of 41.2 percent year-on-year. With the start of the winter flight schedule, business travel experienced a noticeable rebound at Germany’s largest aviation hub.

Intercontinental business travel – notably to and from North America – and destinations in Western Europe benefitted from this development. As in the previous months, holiday travel continued to be the main growth driver, showing the strongest demand for destinations in Cyprus, Turkey and the Caribbean. Compared to pre-pandemic November 2019, FRA’s passenger numbers were still down by 19.2 percent in the reporting month.

Cargo volumes in Frankfurt continued to decline by 14.5 percent year-on-year in November 2022. Again, this decrease was primarily caused by the overall economic slowdown and the airspace restrictions related to the war in Ukraine.

In contrast, FRA’s aircraft movements climbed by 12.7 percent year-on-year to 32,544 takeoffs and landings in the reporting month.

Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) grew by 11.4 percent year-on-year to around 2.0 million metric tons.

Fraport’s global network of airports also benefitted from ongoing strong demand. Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia registered 66,843 passengers in November 2022 (up 46.4 percent year-on-year). Traffic at the two Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) rose to a total of 1.2 million passengers (up 8.0 percent). Peru’s Lima Airport (LIM) served about 1.7 million passengers in the reporting month (up 30.3 percent year-on-year).

Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports also continued their growth trend, with total traffic advancing to 694,840 passengers (up 23.2 percent).

In Bulgaria, traffic at Fraport’s Twin Star airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) increased to 85,852 passengers overall (up 64.5 percent).

Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera welcomed some 1.4 million passengers in November 2022 (up 17.5 percent year-on-year).
