Centara Hotels & Resorts launches “Help the Heroes” campaign with donations to support healthcare workers and communities in need

April 30, 2020 by PressEditor

Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand’s leading hotel operator, has launched “Help the Heroes,” a campaign aimed at supporting those in need during COVID-19, with donations going to the Chaipattana COVID-19 Aid Fund (and other pandemics) and Thai Red Cross Society.

‘Help the Heroes’ is an initiative designed to directly benefit health workers and vulnerable communities impacted by COVID-19. When a consumer buys a Centara cash voucher for a future escape, Centara will add a further 50% value to the purchase. Half will go to the buyer, with the value of the voucher being increased by 25% to help them get more out of their next adventure, when it is safe to travel again.  And the other half will be made as a donation to those in need, with the customer able to choose which of the two charities Centara donates to.

Both selected charities support the fight against COVID-19. The Chaipattana COVID-19 Aid Fund (and other pandemics) provides support for under-resourced hospitals with items such as personal protective equipment and other essential medical supplies. The Red Cross Society provides medical supplies to hospitals and masks to the most vulnerable people.

To help Thailand’s heroes, people can visit the company’s website and buy Centara cash vouchers. Valid from now until 31 October 2021 and with a value starting at THB1,000, the vouchers can be redeemed for hotel stays or spending in the hotel whilst staying at any Centara Hotels & Resorts’ properties in Thailand and overseas.

“We are enormously grateful for the fantastic and selfless work being carried out by medical workers in the fight against COVID-19 and we are very serious about supporting the global efforts to beat the disease.  That’s why we created this initiative and we are very happy to be contributing to both honourable charities.  We also understand the current strain on families and communities who are unable to leave their homes or provinces, or see friends and loved ones, so we hope by providing a little extra to customers too, it can give them something to look forward to when it is safe to travel again”, said Thirayuth Chirathivat, CEO, Centara Hotels & Resorts.

‘Help the Heroes’ is part of Centara’s ongoing efforts during COVID-19. The company is also providing complimentary hotel accommodation and meals to healthcare workers while flagship property, Centara Grand at CentralWorld in Bangkok, has hosted doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff from the Police Hospital since 1st April 2020. The company is also poised to launch a social media campaign to thank the healthcare heroes from Thailand and around the world.

Centara Hotels & Resorts supports social distancing and the Thai government and global initiatives to stay at home. The company also recently introduced a high-quality delivery service to take food to people’s homes during the crisis.

The group has implemented the following safety measures in the hotels that remain open: social distancing arrangements, installation of additional hand washing hand sanitising stations in public areas of hotels and resorts and in common areas frequented by guests and employees; expanded employee training in transmission prevention, which incorporates guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO); notices in public areas to inform guests about the situation and protective measures they can take; frequent periodic sanitizing of common areas within each property, including food preparation areas, restaurants that remain open and common guest areas; and providing updates to guests on the situation as needed. In addition, thermal scanners check the temperature of guests and visitors; those with high fever or other symptoms may undergo additional screening. When checking in, all hotel guests are also asked to fill out a questionnaire inquiring about their prior trips.

Bartlett Brands Future Travelers Generation-C at UK CTO AGM

April 29, 2020 by PressEditor

The newly-established grassroots initiative known as rebuilding.travel just endorsed and became part of the Generation-C defiintion identifying future travelers.

Jamaica Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has branded future travelers as Generation-C amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister did so today at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) UK Chapter’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) where he spoke in depth about the advent of a new type of post-pandemic traveler.

The term Generation-C will the basis of the #rebuildingtravel initiative known as rebuilding.travel . Rebuilding.travel was spearheaded in a partnership with the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP), the African Tourism Board (ATB), and added today the Global Tourism Resilience Crisis & Management Center (GTRCM) that is under the leadership of the Hon. Minister Edmund Bartlett.

Invited to the CTO’s AGM as the keynote speaker, Minister Bartlett first defined the term Generation-C.

When talking to eTurboNews, the Minister explained term Generation-C or GEN-C (the post-pandemic traveler) as inter-generational, a merging of the demographics the island traditionally targeted and importantly one which was essentially ageless.

Minister Bartlett said: “We as an island and as part of the global travel and tourism industry need to adapt swiftly to the requirements of this new type of traveler post pandemic. GEN-C will be unsettled by the crisis they have lived through this year, they will need reassurance and evidence that their experience overseas will enhance their lives, not put their loved ones at risk.”

The global tourism industry has been severely impacted by the pandemic with tourism-related activities coming to a halt as countries try to contain the spread of the disease.

“We are working hard to create new protocols for our industry to be implemented as soon as we can safely welcome visitors back. These measures will tackle sanitation and hygiene requirements, protocols for behavior at swimming pools, on our beaches, and in our restaurants.

“They will respond to the new sensitivities of the post-COVID-19 traveler and will be holistic covering all aspects of the vacation experience. They will be measures that without a doubt will become the new norm,” added Minister Bartlett.

During an interview with Travel Weekly, Minister Bartlett also spoke of the new online training program and certification courses that have been rolled out to thousands of out of work tourism workers in Jamaica in an effort to fortify the industry for a strong economic future.

“Our online training program which is being offered by the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation forms a part of the overall recovery strategies being implemented to help mitigate the impact of the pandemic so when we emerge out of this disruption we will be ready and better able to manage when the sector reopens,” said Minister Bartlett.

Anguilla’s Government Lifts Restrictions on Movement

April 28, 2020 by PressEditor

H.E. Governor Tim Foy and the Hon. Premier Victor Banks have announced the removal of all regulations restricting movement and gatherings, effective Wednesday, April 29. Testing has now shown that there are no active or suspected cases of COVID-19 in Anguilla, and the Chief Medical Officer advised the Executive Council on April 27 that these restrictions can be safely removed.

This means that churches, places of worship, all retail stores, hair salons and barber shops, accommodation suppliers, gyms and spas, recreational facilities, official lotteries, restaurants and bars can re-open from Wednesday, April 29.

The Governor and Premier thanked Anguillians for their support in following the restrictions while they were in place, and in bringing about this great achievement.  They also cautioned against becoming complacent and asked that everyone continue to practice social distancing.  Environmental health officials in Anguilla will be visiting all commercial premises in the coming weeks to check compliance with established environmental health regulations, bearing in mind the importance of good basic hygiene in preventing the spread of all infectious diseases.

The Governor and Premier also noted that these or other restrictions may be re-introduced if circumstances change.

Anguilla’s ports will remain closed for passenger movements until the situation outside Anguilla allows for the safe reopening to external traffic. No definitive date has yet been set, but it is unlikely to be before the end of May. A limited number of repatriation flights for foreign nationals will take place this week. These flights – all of which have been formally requested by overseas governments – will take place under the same controlled arrangements as those previously implemented. All aircraft will arrive empty, with the aircrew remaining on board so avoiding any contact with ground staff.

The Hon. Premier Victor Banks is painfully aware that there are many Anguillians overseas who wish to return home but can’t because of the current border closure. They are working now to put in place arrangements to enable their safe return, and details will be announced in the coming days. Establishing an on-island capability to reliably test for the virus, expanding quarantine facilities and creating a phased program of returns that will match the island’s ability to test and quarantine people are the key requirements that are being addressed.

Illegal boat landings remain the greatest threat to Anguilla’s health and security and protecting Anguilla from illegal entry is a top priority for the Government. Coordinated land, sea and air patrols remain in place, and anyone attempting or assisting an illegal crossing will be arrested.

H.E. Governor Tim Foy and the Hon Premier Victor Banks acknowledged that the steps that Anguilla has been taking are helping to keep the island safe. However, no active cases does not mean that hygienic practices or respiratory etiquette should cease, and they urged all Anguillians to take the simple steps that save lives:

  • Wash your hands frequently;
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a disposable tissue, or in the crook of a flexed elbow;
  • Frequently clean and disinfect shared spaces and work surfaces; and
  • Avoid contact with persons suffering from or exhibiting symptoms of acute respiratory infections such as the flu, coughs, and colds.

WTM Portfolio reschedules global trade shows

April 28, 2020 by PressEditor

Reed Travel Exhibitions has rescheduled the dates for the three spring global trade shows in its WTM Portfolio: WTM Latin America, Arabian Travel Market (ATM) and Africa Travel Week, which comprises of WTM Africa and International Luxury Travel Market Africa.

The original dates of the events have had to be changed in response to the escalation of COVID-19.

Firstly, ATM has been rescheduled from 19-22 April 2020 at Dubai World Trade Centre, UAE, to the new date of 16 – 19 May 2021 at the same venue.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market (ATM), said: “We at Arabian Travel Market want to express our concern for everyone impacted by the coronavirus.

“We are fully aware of the important role that ATM plays for industry professionals across the Middle East region and beyond. We are grateful for the full endorsement that we have received from our customers and partners, who assisted in helping us reach our decision and agreed the 2020 event should be rescheduled.

“In the meantime, while the physical show will be rescheduled to 2021, we will keep the industry connected by hosting an ATM Virtual Event from 1-3 June 2020 featuring a series of webinars, live conference sessions, speed networking events, one-on-one meetings and much more.”

WTM Latin America 2020, which was due to take place from 31 March-2 April, will now be held from 20-22 October 2020 at the same venue, Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo.

Luciane Leite, Director WTM Latin America, said: “We appreciate the hard work that goes into the planning and preparations that our partners and exhibitors prepare for the event and we have to unite in this challenging period. These are difficult times, but I am sure that together we will emerge stronger from this situation.”

Meanwhile, Africa Travel Week, which comprises of WTM Africa and International Luxury Travel Market Africa, had been scheduled to take place from 2-8 April this year, will now be postponed until 2021 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Carol Weaving, Managing Director of Reed Exhibitions Africa, said: “Due to the uncertainty in the region and around the world, with many of our clients facing company travel bans, we have decided to postpone the event to 2021. Our thoughts are with all those affected in these difficult times.”

Megan Oberholzer, Portfolio Director for Africa Travel Week, added: “We would like to thank the industry for their support in these unprecedented times.”

Claude Blanc, WTM Portfolio Director, said: “We are constantly reviewing the situation around COVID-19 and the impact on our events in line with local and national government and public health advice and World Health Organization guidelines. Our policies reflect those of the country governments in which our events take place.

“There has never been a more crucial time for the travel industry to work together and our newly scheduled shows promise to be the quality business events that exhibitors and visitors have come to expect – just a little later in the year.”

“We will meet at WTM events in the future. Until that time comes, WTM Portfolio has launched a new online portal called WTM Global Hub, to connect and support the travel industry professionals around the world. WTM Global Hub will keep you informed, inspired and connected.”

Visitor registration remains valid for the new event dates and anyone who has booked travel and/or hotel accommodation should contact their respective tour operator, airline and hotel they booked with.
