Wilton Manors Raises Transgender Flag in Solidarity with the Transgender Community

“I condemn the President’s decision to exclude all transgender persons from military service,” said Mayor Gary Resnick. “Transgender persons are U.S. citizens who pay taxes, support their communities and currently serve with distinction in the military. President Trump’s decision to exclude all such persons from the military flies in the face of what our country stands for and is not based on anything other than bigotry and misunderstanding.  It is apparent that this President does not represent me nor my community.”

As a result of the 2010 U.S. Census, the City of Wilton Manors was named the “Second Gayest City” in the United States. With a large percentage of the population identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, Wilton Manors has been recognized nationally and internationally as one of the most progressive places to live, work and play for many years.

“The city has long supported the right of all patriotic citizens to serve in the armed forces,” said Vice Mayor Justin S. Flippen. “Wilton Manors shall remain a beacon of hope to those most tempest-tost by foes of equality, even if they hold the highest office in our land. America is better than this ban, and we proudly support the transgender community’s equal rights, including the right to serve openly and freely in the military.”
