U.S. Army Continues Partnership with the Black Engineer of the Year Awards to Develop Next Generation of STEM Leaders

ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Recognizing the impact and importance of the work of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA), the U.S. Army will sponsor the organization’s 2018 Global Competitiveness Conference. The conference attracts the top-performing high school and HBCU college students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and recognizes the top African-American professionals and influencers in those fields.

Each year, the U.S. Army and BEYA join together during the conference to build awareness of the educational and career opportunities available to young African American professionals and students, particularly in the STEM fields. The U.S. Army has a longstanding track record of developing future leaders, while providing greater career opportunities and access to higher education. These opportunities span more than 150 career paths including in-demand fields such as software developer, cyber security analyst, and computer engineering, among others.

The three-day annual BEYA conference begins Thursday, February 8 at the Marriott Wardman Park – Washington D.C. On February 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, the U.S. Army will conduct three Pre-College Workshops on the importance of cybersecurity in today’s world, led by Lt. Col Michael Lewis. In addition, the Army will host an interactive exhibit to allow participants to experience Army robotics technology by navigating robots through an obstacle course.

“The spirit of this partnership allows the U.S. Army to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring STEM educational and career opportunities that provide for long-term growth and success for young African American leaders,” stated Lt. Col. Carla Debro, Multicultural Events Program Manager at the Army Marketing and Research Group. “The U.S. Army provides numerous opportunities for students and professionals alike to lead and succeed in a wide range of STEM careers, while also learning lifelong leadership skills.”

Two scholarships will be presented by Lt. Col. Joel Thomas at this year’s conference. U.S. Army ROTC Cadet Emily Conticello, originally from Berlin, Connecticut studying Justice and Law at American University, will receive 2.5-year scholarship valued at:  $125,470.00. In addition, U.S. Army ROTC Cadet Ikpefua Olumese, originally from Oxon Hill, Maryland studying Computer Technology at Bowie State University will be presented with a 3-year scholarship valued at:  $40,000.00.

Last year, the Army awarded more than $274 million in college scholarships to more than 13,000 students through the ROTC program. And, through its March2Success program, the Army provides a free online resource that helps students prepare for state standardized tests and college entrance exams.

The U.S. Army’s continued support of the BEYA Conference reflects the organizations’ shared values and responsible approach to building our nation’s future leaders and ensuring our nation’s youth are aware of opportunities and resources for advancing their educational and career goals.
