Travel Insurance Coverage for Memorial Day Travel Delays, Explained by Squaremouth

Delays Caused by a Flight Disturbance
Some policies with the Travel Delay benefit cover any delay of a ticketed form of transportation, such as a flight being held up to remove a passenger due to a disturbance or overbooking.

What is Not Covered?

More than 39 million Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, the highest total in 12 years, according to AAA. With more people on the roads and in airports, even insured travelers should plan ahead for traffic and long security lines.

Missed Flight Due to Traffic
Getting caught in traffic does not trigger travel insurance coverage. However, some policies may provide coverage if a traveler is delayed due to an accident while on their way to the airport.

Missed Flight Due to Long Airport Security Lines
Travel insurance does not cover travelers who miss their flight due to long lines checking in, or at a security checkpoint.

“Travel insurance is designed to protect travelers from unforeseen events,” explains Squaremouth spokesperson Megan Singh. “During holiday weekends, heavy traffic and long lines in the airport can be expected, and are not covered by travel insurance.”
