The Skirvin Hilton Oklahoma City Names New Artist in Residence

Jerry Bennett Appointed as 2018-2019 Artist in Residence at Historic Oklahoma City Hotel

September 18, 2018 Americas

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Skirvin Hilton Oklahoma City is pleased to announce Jerry Bennett as its seventh Artist in Residence. Bennett, an accomplished comic and pop culture artist, will work in the historic hotel’s studio space for one year, beginning Oct. 1, 2018.

Skirvin Paseo Artist Creativity Exposition, or SPACE, is a unique urban Artist-in-Residence program in which emerging visual artists who are members of the Paseo Arts Association can apply for a yearlong, on-site residency in Oklahoma City’s premier downtown landmark hotel. Bennett was selected by a committee consisting of distinguished artists, leaders from the Paseo Art Association and members of The Skirvin Hilton.

As the 2018-2019 Skirvin Hilton Artist in Residence, Bennett will create a series of original short comic book vignettes consisting of original pen and ink pieces, in addition to creating a unique Oklahoma-centric comic book. Inspiration for the project will stem from Oklahoma City’s landmarks, as well as popular sites throughout the state. Additionally, as part of his residency, Bennett encourages and welcomes guests of all ages to stop by the studio to craft and design their own mini-comic, which will serve as a memento of this year’s Artist-in-Residence program.

Bennett prides himself on not only being a talented comic-focused artist, but also working as an educator who creates workshops and demonstrations for organizations such as Positive Tomorrows, Metropolitan Library System: MWC Moore and Northwest Branches and University of Central Oklahoma. He also speaks at local events, such as the New World Comic Con and Soonercon. Aside from engaging in public speaking, Bennett is also a freelance artist who has worked with industry titans, such as DreamWorks, Stan Lee, Scholastic Children’s Books and Upper Deck (Marvel) – to name a few.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jerry as our next Artist in Residence,” said Gerald Rappaport, general manager, The Skirvin Hilton. “His art is a fresh introduction to our program and is incredibly popular, following the recent release of several Marvel movies to the big screen. I am confident that our hotel guests will enjoy this fun and unique Artist-in-Residence experience.”
