Malta Will Open Its International Airport To All Flight Destinations on July 15

June 17, 2020 by PressEditor

Malta’s Ministry for Tourism and Consumer Protection and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) welcomes the announcement made yesterday by Prime Minister Robert Abela that a further six countries have been added to the list of destinations for when the Malta International Airport officially reopens on July 1, and that restrictions on all other flight destinations will be lifted on July 15.

The destinations that have been added to the list of destinations to open on July 1 are Italy (except for Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, and Piemonte), France (except for Ile de France), Spain (except for Madrid, Catalonia, Castilla -La Mancha, Castile, and Leon), Poland (except for Katowice Airport), Greece and Croatia. The original list of countries that to be reopened for travel included Germany, Austria, Sicily, Cyprus, Switzerland, Sardegna, Iceland, Slovakia, Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Luxembourg, and Czech Republic. More destinations will be announced in due course, once clearance from the health authorities is received. Israel which had been included on the original list has been removed. The list of destinations will be monitored regularly and reviewed if necessary and can be found on https://www.visitmalta.com/en/covid-19

Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli stated that the opening of the Malta International Airport will further sustain our tourism and economy. She added that the work that has been done over the past weeks and months has classified Malta as one of the safest destinations. The Ministry together with the Malta Tourism Authority will be focusing on marketing and different incentives to attract tourists concluded the Minister.

Dr. Gavin Gulia, Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority, said that with these six additional destinations opening up as from July 1, and the rest becoming accessible by the middle of next month, the travel and hospitality sector can start to recover lost ground fast. MTA will do everything in its power to support local stakeholders in their efforts to regain the levels of visitor inflows that were the norm before the global crisis.

Yesterday’s announcement comes in the wake of last week’s statement by the European Commission in which EU countries were encouraged to lift travel restrictions within the bloc and proposed a gradual lifting of the external travel ban starting July 1. A significant number of EU countries have already lifted their travel restrictions.

The Prime Minister also announced that the public health emergency that had been declared due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be lifted. This means that all remaining legal notices related to COVID-19 restrictions will be revoked, including the ban on gatherings of more than 75 persons. Social distancing, hygiene, and the use of a face mask where necessary remain recommended.

Malta Sunny and Safe, a digital booklet just issued by the Ministry of Tourism & Consumer Protection is available online.

About Malta

The sunny islands of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, are home to a most remarkable concentration of intact built heritage, including the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any nation-state anywhere.  Valletta built by the proud Knights of St. John is one of the UNESCO sights and the European Capital of Culture for 2018. Malta’s patrimony in stone ranges from the oldest free-standing stone architecture in the world, to one of the British Empire’s most formidable defensive systems, and includes a rich mix of domestic, religious and military architecture from the ancient, medieval and early modern periods. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife, and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do. MTA Invites the World to “Dream Malta Now… Visit Later”

April 22, 2020 by PressEditor

“Dream Malta Now… Visit Later” is the name of a promotional campaign that the Malta Tourism Authority launched today with the aim of reminding potential visitors about the beauty that awaits them in Malta once it becomes possible for people to start travelling again. Using a 60-second video clip produced in fourteen different languages, the campaign will be conducted primarily online, and will be accompanied by a series of social media posts promoting the same message.

Commenting on this campaign, Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Julia Farrugia Portelli, stated: “When faced with a challenging scenario like the one we are experiencing at the moment, a common reaction is that of halting all marketing and retreating completely from the scene. However, this was not the philosophy adopted by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Government of Malta. On the contrary, we devised a campaign, oriented towards different areas of interest, through which we aim to provide prospective visitors with a taste of the Maltese Islands and entice them to visit at a later date.”

Carlo Micallef, Deputy CEO and Chief Marketing Officer at the Malta Tourism Authority, stated that in spite of the fact that international tourism is at a standstill, the work of MTA’s marketing team went on unabated. “At the moment, we are conducting various inspirational campaigns in a number of countries with the aim of keeping Malta, Gozo and Comino top of mind for those who will one day become future visitors to our islands.”

Johann Buttigieg, Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Tourism Authority, explained how in addition to marketing, MTA is also busy with projects aimed at improving the infrastructure as well as the levels of service provided through a programme of training for staff involved in the tourism sector. “One has to keep in mind that, as soon as the COVID-19 crisis is over, competition among tourism destinations will be fiercer than ever. So it is imperative that we are among the front runners when this occurs and that, together with our industry stakeholders, we can provide the best possible product to attract visitors to Malta as we were doing before the pandemic started.”
