Joanne Liebenberg Interview: How Professional Dancing Gives you the Freedom to Travel the World

November 3, 2020 by PressEditor

Joanne Liebenberg is a Professional Dance Artist from South Africa and her career has taken her around the world. This dance phenom says that she has Dance to thank for it all. Liebenberg’s passion became her career and her career has since taken her around the globe. In an interview, this extraordinary Artist, opens up and answers questions about how ‘Dancing’ has given her the opportunity to travel the world.

Your career has taken you all over the world. Do you enjoy the travel aspect of your work and performing in so many different countries?

Definitely! I have always wanted to travel our beautiful world and growing up I quickly built up a list of so many places I just had to visit. I have Dance to thank for all my world travels, which include more than 20 countries and many cities. I am blessed to have worked with many international choreographers and have gained many international friends along my journey, who all share the same passion. By travelling to all these different countries, this has opened up many more dance opportunities for me and I have also gained a broader knowledge of dance as well. I have a great deal of love and respect for my craft!

Tell us about your contracts with the world’s largest and best cruise ship company in the world, Royal Caribbean International?

This is a dream dance job! I have just completed my second contract performing as a Featured Dancer with the company travelling and performing for audiences around the globe. I was the only South African to have been offered a contract when I auditioned for them whilst when I was dancing in NYC. On ‘Radiance of the Seas’ and ‘Voyager of the Seas’, I have performed in countries and cities such as Miami, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Australia, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and New Zealand. Hawaii has been my favourite place to visit so far, I had dreamed of venturing there for many years and my job made that a reality for me. There’s no bigger entertainment operation in the world than Royal Caribbean, on land or sea and I feel privileged to be a part of this elite company, dancing with the best talent from around the world.

What performances were you featured in before you started working with Royal Caribbean International?

Before my incredible journey with Royal Caribbean International, I performed in the show ’Another Day’ as Lead Dancer at the Kalk Bay Theatre in South Africa with Followspot Productions. This show was very special to be a part of, especially seeing my face on posters advertised all over Cape Town for the show. My ‘office’ had a view of the sea and the theatre was situated in the heart of Kalk Bay. This was a beautiful change of scenery for me as right before this I was dancing in the hustle and bustle of New York City. In NYC, I performed on the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater with Broadway Dance Center. I also became BDC’s ‘poster girl’ in NYC.

You’ve also earned many international awards. Do those awards change your view of your dance abilities in any way?

Before Dance became my career, I represented my country, South Africa, internationally for 5 consecutive years. I’ve been to Germany for the World Showdance Championships, Poland for the World Ballet, Jazz and Modern Championships, Portugal for The World Dance Week and USA for the American Dance Awards. By achieving Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for my country, it has proven my extraordinary ability for Dance and boosted my confidence in my dance ability. Dance has just taken me everywhere!

How do you like to stay in practice when you’re in between tours and performances?

Dance is such an exciting career as you never know what audition is coming up next. You always have to be ready and need to stay on top of your game. In between big dance contracts and tours, I Perform, Choreograph and Teach with different companies in South Africa such as Vole Ballet School and DS Dance. Due to the global pandemic, it’s been a struggle for Artists, but I have had the privilege to take international classes online as well as teach and perform virtually.

Where do you hope your dance career will take you next in the world?

I already have two future dance contracts lined up for me in America which I am extremely excited about. I have been offered to be the ‘Dance Specialist’ at the internationally renowned, Chace Dance Company in Orlando Florida where I will demonstrate choreography for the company and perform as a Soloist at company exhibits, showcases, classes and workshops. I have also been offered a contract with the well-established dance and performing arts facility, Center for Performing Arts Methuen in Massachusetts as the company’s ‘Dance Demonstrator’ where besides demonstrating choreography in all genres, I will perform as a soloist in classes at the studio as well as workshops and as a Lead Dancer at future end of term showcases around Massachusetts area, live as well as virtually.

What other interests do you have besides Travel and Dance?

Besides singing and acting which all play a part in the performing world, I recently became a certified and registered Yoga Instructor and certified Nutritionist. These certifications and experiences have opened up new doors for me. They also expand what I am able to offer as an artist. This was the case when I ran the social media division for a magazine-style website called iDiveblue during the Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa. iDiveblue provides quality content covering travel, adventure sport, and marine conservation. Furthermore, I also love the ocean, swimming, reading books, baking vegan desserts, photography, videography, and anything adventurous in nature. It doesn’t end there – I am a qualified PADI Scuba Diver, and I enjoy playing my ukulele which has never left my side during my worldwide travels.

What is your advice you would like to share with aspiring dancers?

My advice is that your dreams and goals will present themselves to you – trust in that process, what is meant for you will come. Your heart will whet your appetite for the goals that you need to work towards. Never stop believing that you can achieve them. Stay humble and work relentlessly with all your passion to back you up. Most importantly, enjoy the journey as it’s all part of the growth that will get you to where you are meant to be.

Joanne Liebenberg is proof that you can maintain a top-tier Dance career and still travel the world. Artists and Athletes, with the correct self-discipline, can be inspired and follow by example. Proving to be the talented Artist that she is, Liebenberg’s determination has carved out a highly successful career for her and fulfilling her desire to travel and experience the world. It is obvious that her humility, drive, and talent will keep propelling her to new heights!

Grand Lucayan, Sold

March 3, 2020 by PressEditor

The Government of The Bahamas sold the Grand Lucayan on Monday, March 2, 2020, to a partnership between Royal Caribbean International and ITM (Bahamas Port Investments Ltd.), which is expected to make a $250 million investment between the hotel and the redevelopment of the cruise port.

The Heads of Agreement Signing Ceremony was held on the Great Lawn of the property, some 11 months following the signing of the Letter of Intent on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis described the day as a wonderful one as the government’s intention was never to hold on to the property, but initially purchased it so save jobs of Grand Bahamians and businesses.

“As we stated at the time, it was our intention to privatize the property as quickly as possible. We wanted to ensure that we found the right buyer who shared our vision for the renewal of Grand Bahama. Our vision was the renewal and rebirth of Grand Bahama’s tourism sector and product as an essential element in the restoration of this island’s potential.

“I am pleased that Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the ITM Group, trading as Bahamas Ports International, share our vision and decided to invest in the longterm future and sustainability of Grand Bahama. The Developer shared their vision of reinventing the tourism product for land-based guests arriving by air and those arriving by cruise and ferry ships with a distinctive Bahamian flavour and characteristics.”

He continued, “This $250 million dollar investment will go a long way in revitalizing Grand Bahama, with myriad economic and employment opportunities for more Grand Bahamians. After many false dawns, there is an exciting new horizon for our second most populous island and economic center. Both the government and the developer are investing in the future and possibilities of Grand Bahama. Grand Bahamas is at the beginning of a new day.”

As a result of the purchase, 3,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created in construction as well as working at the hotel or cruise port.

Grand Bahamians will reap the benefits of capital investment, employment opportunities for Bahamian workers in the tourism and construction industries, increased commerce for local businesses in the Port Lucaya Market Place, taxi drivers and tour operations. This increased revenue will enable the government to support infrastructural programs.

Additionally, training programs will be offered for Bahamians through RCCL Training Academy as well as opportunities for small businesses and Bahamian entrepreneurs including those producers of Bahamian products.

“With Grand Bahama’s proximity to the large Florida market in particular, this investment will promote sustainable economic growth and development on Grand Bahama. This investment will also expand the experience for cruise passengers to The Bahamas. As you are aware, a high number of cruise experiences are Bahamas only cruises, a strategic advantage for The Bahamas and good economics for cruise lines. Given the many millions of people who enjoy cruises and the size of the market, the new ports in Nassau and Grand Bahama will both enjoy increased numbers.

“Ladies and Gentlemen: As a result of this development it is anticipated that Grand Bahama will provide a better and more enjoyable overall guest experience to Freeport, Grand Bahama, and promote future traffic growth to Grand Bahama. We must revitalize public infrastructure and provide economic opportunities and incentives for the private sector to invest in the revitalization of properties and businesses.”

The Prime Minister said discussions are currently ongoing to determine the best way to redevelop the Grand Bahama International Airport, which will require a major investment.

“I first came to Grand Bahama many years ago. Like many of you I have seen its ups and downs, its struggles and its needs. I also saw the hope and tenacity of the many good and talented people who live here. You have demonstrated courage and resilience. With this major investment and other investments, we are restoring the confidence of Grand Bahama. Your development is vital for our entire country. I am grateful that my government could play a role in helping to build a new Grand Bahama.”

Minister of Tourism & Aviation, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar noted that the day could not come fast enough for him, with the opposition to purchase of the property by the government, even though the intention was to own it for only a brief period.  Some 18 months later, the property has been sold.

He said, “As Minister of Tourism and Minister with Responsibility for this property, I am extremely excited that that the intended purchasers of this hotel are Royal Caribbean and the ITM Group.  Between them, they are well funded, bring to the table a great deal of experience in the tourism sector, and have a proven track record of successful projects.

This hotel is to be transformed.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are to be invested into this property to refurbish/renovate/reconstruct 500 rooms in Phase One and another 500 rooms along with 500 villas in Phase Two.  Additional features will include a new casino, a spectacular water theme park and a new shopping, restaurant and retail center.

Add to that the new cruise port that is to be built in the Freeport Harbour to accommodate three ships in Phase One and up to seven ships in subsequent phases, and one will quickly conclude that this entire project, hotel and waterpark right here where we are standing plus new cruise port, plus attractions down at the Freeport Harbour is absolutely monumental for tourism in Grand Bahama.”

Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator the Hon. J. Kwasi Thompson, gave welcome remarks.  Also giving remarks were Robert Shamosh, Chief Executive Officer, Holistica Destinations; Mauricio Hamui, Chief Executive Officer, ITM; and Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

Also, in attendance were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Peter Turnquest and other Ministers of Cabinet; Members of Parliament, Permanent Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, representatives from the business community, taxi drivers, and straw vendors.

Immediately following the official ceremony, guests were treated to the pulsating sounds of a Junkanoo Rushout followed by a reception.

Prior to the start of the Heads of Agreement Signing Ceremony at the Grand Lucayan on Monday, March 2, 2020 Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis and Minister of Tourism & Aviation the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, met with officials of Royal Caribbean International and Bahamas Port Holdings, the group purchasing the hotel. Shown from left are: Rev. Ideal ocean cruise ship: Ship sizes and what they mean for your cruise

April 24, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Ships sizes range from megaships (over 4,000 passengers) to very small vessels and luxury yachts whose passengers number in mere dozens, and knowing the differences is key to planning your best cruise vacation.

Cruise experts have divided today’s ships into six categories and provides information on the benefits each provides: XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL.

Extra, Extra Large Ships (XXL) – 4,000+ passengers

These megaships boast unparalleled options in entertainment and amenities. They truly give the impression of being on board a floating city and provide endless choices in dining, activities and shopping (some are so large as to even incorporate a “mall” area with brand name stores). If you desire a resort-type feel from your cruise or worry about sea-sickness, this may be your best option.

Some benefits of XXL ships:

•A large variety of cabin options in every price range
•Dining options that range from small, informal cafes to 5-star restaurants
•Over the top entertainment options that include Broadway-quality shows, 3-D movie theaters, large casinos, extensive waterpark areas and more
•Extremely comprehensive children’s programs and amenities
•Increased ship stability; little sea motion

Example XXL ships:

•Royal Caribbean International: Allure of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas; Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas
•Disney Cruise Line: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy
•Costa Cruise Line: Costa Diadema, Costa Venezia, Costa Smeralda
•MSC Cruises: MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside, MSC Virtuosa; MSC Grandiosa, MSC Bellissima, MSC Seaview, MSC Preziosa, MSC Divina MSC Splendida,
•Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Escape
•Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Panorama, Carnival Vista, Carnival Mardi Gras

Extra Large Ships (XL) – 3,000-3,999 passengers

These extra-large ships are a destination unto themselves and are especially good for families and multigenerational cruises due to the many amenities found onboard. There is something for everyone, and many cruisers enjoy their time onboard as much as they do the destinations they visit.

Some benefits of XL ships:

•An abundance of cabin options in many different price ranges
•A variety of dining options, ranging from ultra-casual to very upscale and formal
•A popular favorite with families due to the extensive children’s amenities and programs
•Round-the-clock facilities and activities, such as casinos, water parks, gyms and spas
•Excellent entertainment options and Broadway-quality shows like Royal Caribbean’s productions of Chicago, Hairspray and Saturday Night Fever

Example XL ships:

•Royal Caribbean International: Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas
•Princess Cruises: Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Emerald Princess, Majestic Princess, Ruby Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Sky Princess
•Carnival Cruises: Carnival Splendor, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Dream, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Magic, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Sunrise

•Costa Cruises: Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, Costa Magica, Costa Pacifica
•Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Joy

Large Ships (L) – 2,000 to 2,999 passengers

Large ships offer many of the same amenities as the XL ships, on a slightly smaller scale. They don’t necessarily require a ship map to navigate to entertainment and activity options, and tend to have more personal touches.

Some benefits of L ships:

•Many cabin options in different price ranges
•Numerous dining options, ranging from very casual to formal
•A popular favorite with families due to the extensive children’s amenities and programs
•Also popular with older cruisers, as the pace onboard is not as frenetic
•A variety of activities, such as casinos, gyms and spas and often there are bridge instructors on longer itineraries

•Onboard lecturers are often more cerebral with topics like history, politics and geography.

•Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Sky, Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Star, Pride of America

Medium Ships (M) – 951 to 1,999 passengers

Medium ships generally offer a slower pace than their large counterparts, with fewer crowds, less noise and more modest offerings when it comes to activity and entertainment options. Many cruisers prefer this size of ship for its “relaxation” vibe. Many of these ships tend to be more luxurious with more personal service.

Some benefits of M ships:

•Many of the premium cruise lines have ships that fall into this category
•Several dining options
•Medium-size ships still tend to have amenities like casinos, pools and spas
•Entertainment options tend to include more enrichment activities
•Attracts a more mature crowd that is focused on relaxation and enjoyment of the voyage
•Smaller size of the ships open up options as far as itineraries and ports
•Itineraries are likely to be 10 days or longer

Example M Ships:

•Holland America Line: HAL Maasdam, HAL Veendam, HAL Amsterdam, HAL Rotterdam, HAL Volendam, HAL Zaandam, HAL Oosterdam, HAL Westerdam, HAL Zuiderdam, HAL Noordam
•Princess Cruises: Coral Princess, Island Princess, Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, Sun Princess
•Crystal Cruises: Crystal Serenity
•Oceania Cruises: Oceania Riviera
•Costa Cruises: Costa Classica, Costa Victoria, Costa neoRomantica, Costa neoRiviera
•Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line: Grand Celebration
•Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Sun

Small Ships (S) – 950 passengers or less

Small ships fill a niche for cruisers that are looking for more in-depth exploration of the regions they visit. They can visit ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, and exotic itineraries are the standard. Most river cruise ships and almost all the luxury lines have ships that fall into this category.

Some benefits of S ships:

•Most cabins are suites and have balconies
•Luxury and service are frequently a focal point of a small ship voyage
•Amenities, while limited, tend to be very high end, including dining, shore excursions, spas and enrichment activities.
•Small ships trend toward a truly all-inclusive fare
•Smaller dining and shared areas lend themselves lively conversations and closer relationships with fellow passengers.
•Itineraries tend to be 10 days or longer

Example S ships:

•Princess Cruises: Pacific Princess
•Crystal Cruises: Crystal Symphony
•Regent Seven Seas Cruises: Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Voyager, Seven Seas Explorer
•Oceania Cruises: Oceania Insignia, Oceania Nautica, Oceania Regatta, Oceania Sirena, Oceania Marina

•Costa Cruises: Costa Voyager
•Viking Ocean Cruises: Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky, Viking Sun, Viking Orion, Viking Jupiter
•Seabourn: Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation

Extra Small Ships (XS) – 201-499 passengers

Very small ships offer a private, exclusive ambiance, along with personalized service and the advantage of being able to port almost anywhere. Passengers get a feel for the water and experience destinations in a very close-up, personal way.

Some benefits of XS ships:

•The most important benefit of small ship cruising is an immersive experience in the destination. Very small ships allow an in-depth exploration of nature, culture, history and learning not possible on larger ships.
•Passengers tend to be a well-traveled, worldly crowd who enjoy the pursuit of education and exploration of the destinations they visit
•Very personal attention from the crew; with luxury cruises this translates to personal attendants that see to your every need
