Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket: Advanced water technology helps reduce eco-footprint

February 21, 2019 by PressEditor

Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket is an exclusive luxury residence of 40 penthouses and suites located just steps away from Bangtao Beach, one of the island’s longest beaches lined with white sand.

Green Globe recertified Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket in January this year.

Michael Wenk, General Manager at the resort said: “For the past 7 years we have been continuously reinforcing our dedication towards environmental conservation as we believe we have to take accountability to support and protect our community and our environment. We are actively introducing innovative technological measures to help reduce our eco-footprint and preserve our fragile ecosystem.”

The resort has been leading the way with progressive practices that save precious water resources and reduces plastic pollution. In addition, various green initiatives are designed to educate guests and locals about the importance of protecting the environment.

Generation Water

In October 2017, Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket installed Generation Water technology in all Food and Beverage outlets. Generation Water is a machine that produces water from the air, then purifies and enhances the water through a process inspired by the natural water cycle. This is done by condensing water vapour (humidity) naturally found in the air and circulating it through an advanced filtration process to keep the water as fresh as possible. Minerals are then added to the water, similar to the process that occurs in nature when water flows through rocks, picking up minerals along the way.

“In 2018, we managed to save 3,453 plastic bottles in all Food and Beverage outlets. For 2019, we intend to save over 5,000 plastic bottles, as we plan to implement Generation Water in all guest rooms as well,” explained Mr. Wenk.

Upcycling the Oceans Campaign in Phuket

Situated close to the sea, the resort strives to minimize its environmental impact as much as possible. Over the past year, Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket’s  Green Team Committee participated in several Beach Cleaning activities in Phuket and also joined the “Upcycling the Oceans Campaign in Phuket”.  The beaches are a top priority at the property and the Team is committed to supporting the cleanliness of beach areas to ensure that they remain in a pristine condition just like the natural surroundings. On average all Team members combined, collected over 200kg of waste per beach.

No More Plastic Straws

Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket adheres to sustainable business practices, which have ecological and societal impacts as well as economic impacts. The property’s commitment to sustainable practices includes the changeover to paper straws at the restaurant and bar. Other hotels and restaurants have adopted this eco-friendly practice following the resort’s stance on the elimination of plastic straws.
