Antigua Barbuda Hamptons Challenge Regatta names winners

The results are in, and the annual Antigua Barbuda Hamptons Challenge Regatta was celebrated in style as the race festivities provided entertainment and excitement for the winners and attendees.

Close to 30 vessels entered the race this year; all passionate sailors who were eagerly competing to win the prize: the chance to participate in next year’s Antigua Sailing Week, which will be held from April 27 – May 3,, 2020 in the UNESCO World Heritage site, Nelson’s Dockyard.

The fastest boat and overall winner was ‘August Sky’ skippered by Philip Walters of the Lloyd Harbor/Centerport Yacht Club with a time of 1:14:58. Walters, as the winning captain will travel to Antigua with his crew to participate in the 2020 Antigua Sailing Week, with a charter boat provided by Ondeck and accommodations by the Elite Island Resorts. Second place went to ‘Big Boat’ skippered by Bud Rogers of Breakwater Yacht Club and came in with a time of 1:15:49. They won lunch for 4 at the American Hotel, Sag Harbor and third place was awarded to ‘Firefly,’ which was skippered by Peter Carroll of the Peconic Bay Sailing Association with a time of 1:16:13 with a prize of a “mini barrel” of English Harbour Rum.  Trophies were presented including a Perpetual Cup to be engraved with the winning boat’s name and smaller cups for the runner ups.

“Antigua Sailing Week has become one of the biggest events on the international sailing calendar and the Caribbean’s most exciting and largest Regatta,” says the Honorable Charles “Max” Fernandez, Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism and Investment. “It is one of the most fantastic times to visit Antigua and Barbuda and take advantage of an island-wide party, our 365 beaches, and all that our islands have to offer.”

The Antigua & Barbuda Hamptons Challenge Regatta is a handicapped race using ratings provided by PHRF of Eastern Long Island.  The Organizing Authority is the Peconic Bay Sailing Association. This regatta and awards party is financed by the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority as a way to increase tourism and participation in Antigua Sailing Week. 

The Antigua Barbuda Cocktail Awards Party following the race took place at Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor, which flew the Antigua and Barbuda flag during the popular sailing event and was accompanied by live music, delicious food and celebration. A great time was had by all.

Ships sizes range from megaships (over 4,000 passengers) to very small vessels and luxury yachts whose passengers number in mere dozens, and knowing the differences is key to planning your best cruise vacation.

Many cruisers prefer this size of ship for its “relaxation” vibe. Many of these ships tend to be more luxurious with more personal service.

Antigua and Barbuda launch new global summer campaign: #WhatCoolLooksLike

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority has unveiled its new global summer campaign, #WhatCoolLooksLike, which is expected to convey the trendiness of the destination and its appeal as the ideal summer vacation spot for visitors looking for enjoyable experiences. The campaign draws on what makes the country special and seeks to depict in a creative and engaging way the “coolness” of the destination.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism & Investment, The Honorable Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez has high praises for the creative team, adding that the new campaign is timely and reinforces the messages the islands have been promoting in recent years. “Antigua and Barbuda’s weather during the summer is so much cooler than in other regions, our beaches are serene, and while there are numerous events to enjoy, the pace remains unrushed. The #WhatCoolLooksLike summer campaign brings to life what we have been saying for years, and we thank the team for helping us convey this message in a vivid and imaginative way to potential visitors across the globe. The campaign is being executed in all our major source markets with consumers being enticed to visit Antigua and Barbuda to take advantage of the cool summer savings on offer, as well as the destination’s cool climate,” notes Fernandez.

The multi-faceted summer campaign includes a combination of traditional and digital media and will utilize a variety of tactical trade and consumer activations to ensure the success of the initiative.

The #WhatCoolLooksLike Summer Campaign offers consumers major savings on their vacation to Antigua and Barbuda for travel during the periods April-October 2019.  The savings will be available at participating tour operators, airlines and hotels.

A key element of the campaign is the #WhatCoolLooksLlike Ambassador Program, which comprises a carefully curated selection of local influencers who the Authority believes encompass what “cool” looks like. These Ambassadors have been commissioned to utilize their social media presence and their country, Antigua and Barbuda as their backdrop during the six-month run of the campaign, to share the wealth of awe-inspiring experiences provided in the twin-island state.

Another initiative is the Global Sweepstakes launched today which runs through May 21. Entrants will be asked to opt-in by location in order to upload a video or photo that depicts what cool looks like. At the end of the two-month contest, two random winners will be chosen: One from our overseas source markets will win a complimentary 4-day/3-night stay at the Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua; while one local will win a 2-night, 3-day stay at the Harbour Island Residences in Jolly Harbour. The local element of this campaign was so designed to allow for local participation and engagement, creating a platform where local Antiguans and Barbudans become advocates for the destination.

St. Maarten Heineken Regatta raises over $40,000 for local foundations

Organizers of the St Maarten Heineken Regatta are pleased to announce that a total of $41,900 was raised during the event for local foundations. The raffle was used to drive the event’s “Green” initiatives benefiting sustainability efforts for the island and various projects from local foundations.

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and Heineken worked in collaboration with the Rotary Club of St Maarten, Rotary St Maarten-Mid Isle, and Motorworld, by selling raffle tickets to raise funds for a Beach Cleaning vehicle, an initiative launched last year by the Rotary.

Motorworld joined as a new presenting sponsor for the 39thSt Maarten Heineken Regatta, making a fully-loaded Hyundai Creta available to be raffled. During the week of the Regatta this car, in addition to a selection of other popular brands, were on display in the Regatta Village showcasing the wide variety of cars available for sale on the island. The display was encouraging people to purchase raffle tickets and have a chance to win the new Hyundai Creta, in support of the island’s various environmental projects.

Working together, we have successfully organized another memorable and enjoyable St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. The Rotary Clubs of St. Maarten are working diligently to help make St. Maarten a better place to live or visit and we certainly thank all those who purchased a ticket in support of this endeavor. Even if you didn’t win the car, you have helped ensure that our beaches will remain pristine for decades to come,” said John Caputo, the President of the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten.”
President of the Rotary Club St. Maarten-Mid Isle, Denise Antrobus adds: “On behalf of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle, I would like to congratulate Mr. Soons on winning the car raffle. A big thank you goes to Motorworld who sponsored the Hyundai Creta for this raffle. It was wonderful to work with this partnership of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Rotary Club of St. Maarten, I look forward to seeing the beach cleaner in use on St. Maarten.”
