Desperate mayday by American climber injured on Mount Himlung in Nepal

July 19, 2019 by PressEditor

Global Rescue moved into action at 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) after receiving a mayday call conferenced in by friends of American researcher Dr. John All.

Climbing on a remote Himalayan peak in Nepal called Himlung, All broke through a thin layer of snow and fell 70 feet through a crevasse.

“I’m trapped here,” All said. He sounded desperate, recording first-person video clips from the depths of where he had fallen. Every minute was important to get help to this climber.

Years later, the reason he is enjoying time in Washington can be credited to his satellite phone, fortitude and New Hampshire-based Global Rescue.

When he took his devastating fall, he thought he would die. He spent hours stuck alone with a broken arm, broken ribs and dislocated shoulders.

From his satellite phone, he posted a plea on Facebook that said, “bad shape, need help.”

“Thankfully I didn’t keep falling that way,” All said pointing to the gaping hole in one of his recordings.

The plea for help went directly to Global Rescue, a crisis response firm that provides medical and security evacuation services.

Using 2-way satellite texting, they had critical care paramedic, Jeffrey Weinstein, coach All on how to survive a freezing night on the mountain.

“We received a response from him that said, ‘How long do I have to survive?’” Weinstein said. “He needed to get shelter and he needed to get warmth if he wanted to survive the night.”

Despite his injuries, the 6-foot-5 inch, 240-pound professor and researcher used an ice ax and somehow climbed out of the chasm. It then took him several more hours to crawl to his tent.

Global Rescue was trying to get a helicopter to the scene, but due to inclement weather and limited daylight hours, a rescue wasn’t possible until the next morning. In Nepal, helicopters do not fly at night, making for a long and terrifying night for everyone.

“I knew how badly I was injured. I couldn’t move my arm and I was in piercing agony,” All said.

Even Global Rescue said that All’s efforts were unprecedented – as he helped save his own life by having friends make a call to relay that he was in harm’s way.

All and his research team originally planned to climb near Mt. Everest, but it was shut down after 16 Nepalese guides died in an avalanche. One of those guides was from All’s team.

With the rising dangers of mountain climbing, it pays to always have your cell and satellite phones with you, charged and ready to use.

It is even more important to have a company like Global Rescue standing ready to assist in any way possible at the time of that mayday call. For All, it meant the difference between life and death.

Travel can be unpredictable. Global Rescue has boots on the ground to deliver unmatched travel protection services around the world.

“Global Rescue has been a pioneer in performing difficult rescue missions in difficult places,” said Dan Richards CEO and founder of Global Rescue. “We are proud to have saved the life of Dr. John All and so many others.”
There’re many more reports on Global Rescue missions.

Two Australian Heroes killed when saving a tourist from drowning

April 21, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Tourism and Dairy are popular in  Port Campbell, a coastal town in Victoria, Australia. The town is on the Great Ocean Road, west of the Twelve Apostles, in the Shire of Corangamite and has less than 500 residents.

Two of these residents a father and son today drowned trying to rescue a tourist from rough on Sunday have been described as selfless members of the local community and “like peas in a pod”.

Ross, 71, and Andrew Powell, 32, were life-long members of the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club and were prominent figures in the local dairy farming industry.

They, along with one other lifesaver, were attempting to save a tourist at Sherbrook River, near the Twelve Apostles on Victoria’s south-west coast, on Sunday morning when their boat flipped.

The father and son were declared dead at the scene, while the third lifesaver was seriously injured and airlifted to The Alfred hospital.

Ross was an inaugural member of the lifesaving club when it was formed in 1965 and maintained it his whole life putting his community first.

A 30-year-old male tourist got into trouble wading near the entrance to the Sherbrook River, a 10-minute drive from the Twelve Apostles, about 11am.

Rough surf caused the rescue boat to flip, tossing the three lifesavers into the ocean in an area Cr Trotter said was notoriously dangerous.

An emergency helicopter managed to safe one of rescuers and the tourist out of the water, however, the father and son’s bodies were later found.

The surviving rescue worker, a man in his 50s, has injuries to his back and legs and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition. He remained in a serious but stable condition on Sunday evening.

The tourist who was swept into the water suffered hypothermia and was taken by road ambulance to the Warrnambool hospital in a stable condition.

Mr James said initial investigations found all three lifesavers had been wearing life jackets.

Earlier reports suggested the tourist was taking photographs when he was swept off a rock at the mouth of the river, but emergency services say this was not the case.

Senegalese migrant sets school bus full of children on fire in Italy

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

The driver of a school bus filled with children has been arrested by Italian police for setting fire to the vehicle near Milan. The Senegalese man reportedly called for an end to “deaths in the Mediterranean” during the incident.

Miraculously all 51 schoolboys managed to escape the fire without injuries, although 12 children and two adults were sent to hospital for smoke inhalation.

The 46-year-old Senegal-born driver reportedly spilled gasoline down the aisle of the bus while shouting that he wants to stop deaths in the Mediterranean Sea before igniting the blaze.

“I want to end it, the deaths in the Mediterranean must be stopped,” he said according to the Italian news outlet.

The children were students of Vailati middle school in the Italian city of Cremona, and raised the alarm by calling their parents after the driver announced that he wanted to kill himself.

The Carabinieri, Italy’s national police service, stopped the vehicle by erecting a series of checkpoints that the driver attempted to break through.

The man eventually lost control of the vehicle and attempted to set the bus alight before the military rescued the students by breaking the windows.

Footage of the blaze show firefighters at the scene and the remains of the completely burned vehicle on the side of a busy road. The driver was reportedly known to police and has been arrested for the arson attack.
