InterContinental Genève: 6 years of Green Globe certification

March 13, 2019 by PressEditor

Green Globe first certified the InterContinental Genève in 2014.

Ideally located on an oasis of calm in the diplomatic district, InterContinental Genève offers elegantly designed rooms and suites with breathtaking views of Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc.

This year, the hotel celebrates its 6th year of recertification and remains firmly committed to its many sustainability efforts.

Francois Chopinet, Hotel General Manager explained, “At InterContinental Genève we have included major principles for sustainable development in our daily processes and we continue looking for new ones. We do our best to reduce our footprint and to do this we have put specific systems in place in different areas of the hotel. We are equipping the common areas, the 333 rooms and 2000 m2 of conference facilities with LED lighting and we have developed sustainable business and human resource practices.

“Our staff has access to ongoing training programs. We promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle, for instance eliminating salt from all cafeteria food, organizing team and individual sport activities, and putting in place a fitness center for employees available at the hotel 24 hours a day. We strongly believe that sustainable human resourcemanagement is healthy for our employees and allows us to provide a high quality service to our customers.”

The InterContinental Genève and the United Nations use water from the lake to cool their buildings as part of the Geneva-Lake-Nations (GLN) project. This project, coordinated by the Services Indutriels de Genève (SIG), allows the InterContinental Genève to use 100% renewable energy to cool its premises thereby achieving significant savings in electricity usage and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, as a member of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the hotel will be implementing CO2 reduction goals that will further contribute to its sustainability performance.

Over the years, sustainable efforts at the InterContinental Genève continue to be recognized by Green Engage and Green Globe.

Since June 2018, only biodegradable straws are now provided at bars and restaurants in acknowledgement that the impact of plastic waste on the oceans and environment is far too important to be ignored.

To stimulate regional economic activity, IHG has partnered with a local farm, Ferme de Budé, located just 100 meters away from the property. Fresh, local and seasonal food is sourced year round from the farm for restaurant kitchens. Guests are also encouraged to visit the farm on market days to observe how local food is grown and produced. Furthermore, the hotel sponsors a local beekeeper at the property to preserve bee species. The 100% natural honey is served at the breakfast buffet.

Last year, to give back to the community, the InterContinental Genève proudly participated in two campaigns where staff members collected clothing and bedding

for the Geneva Red Cross. Each year, more than 90,000 kg of clothing is discarded or donated to charities. In 2018, the hotel collected a total of more than 130 kg of clothing to be distributed to adults, children and the elderly.

Cinnamon Lodge Habarana reaches greater heights

February 8, 2019 by PressEditor

Cinnamon Lodge Habarana is a 5-star resort nestled in nature’s serenity right in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle

Green Globe recertified Cinnamon Lodge Habarana in January this year with the resort achieving a high compliance score of 86%.

Mr Arosha Pananwala, General Manager at the resort said, “We, at Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, are extremely thrilled to announce that we have once again been awarded the Green Globe Certification for this year. We are honored to hold this prestigious, globally accredited certification for performance improvement, designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry. This achievement solidifies our undisputed reputation in providing high quality services to our customers and improving our performance in line with global standards. I would like to congratulate our staff and team at Cinnamon Lodge Habarana on this outstanding accolade and encourage them to continue their excellent performance which will raise our brand to greater heights.”

Both management and staff at the resort have made great efforts in key areas of sustainability with resounding success.

Water management was one of the most outstanding accomplishments over the last 12 months. At the end of 2017/18 – Cinnamon Lodge achieved a 21% year on year reduction in water drawn from natural sources.  A water audit was also conducted in 2017/18 to identify areas where water savings could be made and recommendations are currently being implemented.  Plans are in place to install flow restrictors in all guest rooms in order to ensure a moderate flow based on set standards.

Wastewater recycling has also seen a marked improvement. As a monthly average, 52% of total water used is completely recycled through the onsite sewerage treatment plant (STP). Furthermore, landfill was reduced by 7% and the property’s carbon footprint was reduced by 6% per guest night in 2017/18.

The resort has implemented a number of initiatives including increased energy efficient lighting, which have ensured reductions in energy usage. In 2017/18, 300 CFL bulbs were changed over to LED in guest areas and 20 conventional AC units were replaced with inverter AC units. Renewable energy is also utilized with solar panels used for water heating.

Sri Lankan organic culinary experience at the Cinnamon Lodge, Habarana

Cinnamon Lodge is now offering its guests a novel culinary experience that is both organic and authentically Sri Lankan. Based in the resort’s quaint and traditional mud hut, the new organic dining experience has been specially curated for local and international guests and will allow them to observe a wide array of traditional cooking techniques and preparation methods, sample a delicious array of Sri Lankan dishes and flavors and learn more about local farming techniques. The resort operates an extensive organic farm on its grounds, which produces a wide range of fruits and vegetables, as well as rice, milk, and honey.

Compost Project of Cinnamon Lodge

The Green Team at the property has established a successful composting system. Compost consists of garden waste collected from the Cinnamon Lodge Habarana grounds along with farmyard manure and is used to fertilize the resort’s organic herbs and vegetables. The resort has started providing compost by the ton and by tractor loads to certain buyers, thereby reducing the use of chemical fertilizers in gardens and farms. Packs of compost are also sold to visitors and guests.

Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Al Mamzar Dubai making a difference in the community

January 23, 2019 by PressEditor

Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Al Mamzar Dubai is nestled in the elegant district of Al Mamzar, close to Al Mamzar Beach Park, DAFZA, Sharjah, Deira and Bur Dubai. The upscale hotel is a central choice for business, leisure and long term guests with close proximity to metro stations, shopping centres, commercial areas, beaches and attractions in Dubai’s historical centre.

Green Globe recently recertified Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Al Mamzar Dubai after a comprehensive audit was undertaken by the property. Energy, water and waste are monitored on a regular basis and targets set accordingly. In line with its sustainability management plan, the hotel makes consistent efforts to reduce energy and water consumption and waste. The goal this year is to reduce energy usage and waste by 3%.

To stimulate regional economic activity, seasonal ingredients are used in the hotel’s contemporary all day dining restaurant, Spices that offers exotic Asian creations and traditional Swiss cuisine to world classics. Local products including dates and Arabic coffee are also served.

The end of last year was busy with the hotel supporting various charitable causes. Mövenpick Hotel and Resorts annual A Kilo of Kindness campaign was held in September where guests and members of the local community were asked to donate food, clothing and educational supplies to support the Beit Al Khair Society. The organisation aims to help those in need including the poor and elderly, widows, divorced women, sick, low-income families, families of prison inmates, the disabled, people with special needs, orphans and students. A total of 352 kilos of food, school supplies, and clothing donations were given to the Society as part of the UN International Day of Charity.

Staff members also participated in the Beat Diabetes Walk, an initiative designed to raise community awareness regarding diabetes that is hosted by the Landmark Group. Other environmental programs included Clean Up UAE 2018 where hotel members joined with other volunteers of the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to clean up surrounding natural areas. In addition, lights were turned off at the property for an hour as part of annual Earth Day celebrations.
