Malta Gozo “Eco” Island Retains Authenticity and Sustainability

September 9, 2020 by PressEditor

Nicknamed “the Eco Island” by many, Gozo is one of the sister islands of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean. Off the beaten path, Gozo has a solid track record of green initiatives which also help retain the island’s authenticity. Gozo was awarded the Quality Coast Gold Award for its sustainable practices by the Coastal Union.

Sustainability has become a way of life on Gozo. Local communities understand that the island is unique and that its culture and environment need to be protected for it to continue to thrive. Several initiatives have already been put in place, including the implementation of solar panel water heating, the use of photovoltaic panels, and the construction of a wastewater treatment plant. Many Gozitan valleys are cleaned on an annual basis in order to improve the catchment areas from flowing straight to the open sea.   A number of villages on the island have been recognized with the European Destinations of Excellence awards and several popular beaches are now also blue flagged beaches.

Visitors have the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by using alternative modes of transport, including walking, cycling, Segway tours and kayaking. For more information on how to reduce carbon footprints while in Malta, visit here.

Farm to Table

Gozo farmers use organic methods to grow everything from tomatoes to figs, which is preferred by Gozitan chefs and restaurants. Every nation has its food specialties and Gozo is no exception. Here, recipes have been handed down from generation to generation and favorites have changed through the years. As with everything on Gozo, seasonal fresh produce is at the core of everything made here. Freshly picked vegetables make up the base of the platters diners enjoy with a glass of Maltese wine, while fruit and pure Gozitan honey are the cornerstones of most desserts. Many of the popular products here are still made by hand as they have been for generations.

Take the tasty gbejniet for instance; these little, round cheeselets are made from goat’s milk by the same farmers whose parents and grandparents made them decades before. More importantly, they are delicious, and are served fresh or dried, and flavored with pepper and salt. Pastizzi are another must-try for one’s first time on the island. These delicate filo-pastry parcels are stuffed with either peas or ricotta cheese, served with a cup of traditional, sweet tea. For more information on traditional Maltese cuisine, visit here.

Eco-Friendly Accommodations

Several accommodation establishments including hotels and farmhouses on Gozo are eco-labeled by the Malta Tourism Authority. The ECO certification is the national plan for ensuring the environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural sustainability of hotels and farmhouses on the Maltese Islands. The new criteria follow a shift from an environmental plan to a sustainable plan covering environmental, social, cultural, economic, quality, and health & safety.

Safety Measures for Tourists

Malta has produced an online brochure, which outlines all the safety measures and procedures that the Maltese government has put into place for all hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs, beaches based on social distancing and testing.

Gozo in Malta: Welcoming Travelers to Calypso’s Isle

June 24, 2020 by PressEditor

Malta’s charming sister island of Gozo is one of the Meditteranean islands that make up the Maltese archipelago. Gozo is the second largest of the three inhabited Maltese islands and is a bit more quaint and rural than Malta and not overcrowded by tourists. Mythology is an integral part of the island and Gozo is said to have been the home of the mythological Calypso, the nymph from Homer’s Odyssey. The authentic, more remote island is known for its Ġgantija Megalithic Temple ruins, beautiful beaches, and incredible diving sites.

Gozo Goddess Temples

Ġgantija Megalithic Temples The Ġgantija Temples are the earliest set of Megalithic temples that make up this UNESCO World Heritage site. Built between 3600 and 3200 BC, the site is considered as one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world, preceding Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.

The Legend of Gozo & Calypso: Calypso’s Cave

The site is thought to be the same cave Homer mentioned in The Odyssey, where the beautiful nymph Calypso keeps Odysseus as a “prisoner of love” for seven years. The cave overlooks the picturesque Ramla Bay which could very well be the inspiration for the mythical home of Calypso.

“Island Of Goddesses”

  • Gozo Cathedral: Built on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Juno
  • Ġgantija Temples: In ancient times, the temples dedicated to the Mother Goddess at Ggantija are said to have drawn pilgrims from across the island, and from North Africa and Sicily.

Places to Visit

Citadella The Citadel of Victoria is the center of the island of Gozo. Considered to be the Medieval part of Victoria, the area was believed to be first fortified during the Bronze Age. The historic fortified city stands on a flat-topped hill, visible from almost all the island.

Old Prison Located in the Citadel of Victoria, the Old Prison served as a communal cell in the 19th century and now hosts a well-preserved exhibition on fortifications. The walls in the Old Prison have the largest known collection of historical graffiti on the Maltese Islands.

Marsalforn Salt Pans The north coast of Gozo is characterized by 350-year-old salt pans protruding into the sea. During the summer months, locals can still be seen scraping up the crystals of salt.

Tastes of Gozo

The island of Gozo offers unique gastronomic events throughout the year, from wine tastings to trying local delicacies. Gozitan cuisine supports the small and local, giving visitors an authentic gourmet experience. Small Plates are some of Gozo’s most distinctive foods, including local favorites, Gbejniet (traditional sheep milk cheeses), and Pastizzi (miniature pastries). Gozitan wines and craft beer can also add local liquid pleasure to your visit.

Getting to Gozo

From the main island of Malta, take the Gozo Ferry from Cirkewwa Harbour, at the northernmost point of Malta for the scenic 25-minute crossing to Mġarr Harbour, the gateway to Gozo. The ferry service carrying both passengers and cars runs every 45 minutes during the daytime and regularly during night time. Once in Gozo, you can pick up a car or travel by bike around the island. Boat trips and guided bus tours are also an option to efficiently get around Gozo.

Carnival in the Mediterranean? Celebrate Karnival Ta’Malta in Malta and its Sister Island of Gozo

January 2, 2020 by PressEditor

Carnival is one of the oldest historical festivals in both Malta and Gozo, with five centuries of credited and documented history dating back to the Knights’ of St John’s occupancy in Malta. This year Carnival Week in Malta takes place on February 21-25, 2020. This five–day celebration is undoubtedly one of the most colorful events in the Maltese and Gozitan calendars. Traditionally preceding Christian Lent, Carnival provides five days of revelry with Carnival-goers dressing up in colorful costumes and covering their faces with masks.

The heart of the action takes place in Valletta, Malta’s capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the European Capital of Culture 2018. The excitement starts with a procession of extravagantly colored floats and enhanced by the many children running around in fancy costumes. The celebrations continue in Malta’s main nightlife center, Paceville, catching the late-night Carnival-goers who pile into the clubs and bars, still wearing their outrageous outfits.

However, visitors should not miss the colorful celebrations that take place in various towns and villages across the Islands, each having their own version of festivities. For a particular interpretation, Carnival goers can visit Nadur, Gozo, where Carnival takes on a more macabre and funny mood.

Carnival is closely associated with Maltese folklore. It has been celebrated in Malta since the arrival of the Knights of St. John in 1530, and some studies date the first Carnival revelry back as early as 1470. Up until 1751, Carnival was an activity exclusive to Valletta, but that is certainly not true today.

Malta launches key focuses for 2020

November 12, 2019 by PressEditor

As the end of the year approaches, Malta is looking towards what’s in store for 2020. The archipelago combined of Malta, Gozo and Comino will place huge emphasis on four key areas: gastronomy, sustainability, wellness and the launch of a new trail booklet. With an abundance of activities and over 300 days of beautiful sunny weather a year, Malta is firmly placing itself on the map as a must visit destination for 2020.

GASTRONOMY

Malta Launches Year of Gastronomy with a Specially Crafted Maltese Afternoon Tea in Collaboration with Corinthia Hotels

The Gastro Trail

The Gastro Trail has inspired many travellers since its inception in 2018 and has now been included in a booklet that showcases all of Malta Tourism Authority’s themed trails. The food map details some of the island’s very best culinary experiences whether it be the best place to try the abundance of fresh seafood, sample traditional Maltese savoury pastries that are baked throughout the night, meet independent gourmet artisans or simply where to see local cheese being created and buy the freshest ingredients. With the creation of the trail booklet, travellers can now check out a wide selection of all types of amazing experiences the archipelago has to offer, from diving to architecture to soft adventure, always with the handy food map in tow for mealtimes. https://www.maltauk.com/gastronomytrail/

The islands are known for authentic Maltese stews, fields of artichokes, traditionally made goat’s cheese, and some of the world’s most scenic salt pans. The archipelago’s ingredients and home-produced products stay true to the island’s ancient traditions and yet young chefs, award-winning wineries and sleek seaside restaurants maintain Malta’s position as one of Europe’s up and coming cosmopolitan food scenes.

SUSTAINIBILITY

Sustainability at the Heart of Malta’s 2020 Initiatives

The Maltese archipelago, combined of Malta, Gozo and Comino, is placing sustainability at the core of its 2020 travel and tourism activities. Malta will introduce initiatives which extends the islands endeavors to go green.

The island is popular with travellers looking for a culture fix, year-round sunshine and fantastic festivals and through new collaborations, launches and events, the sustainability of Malta’s diverse tourism offering is being placed at the forefront of its 2020 plans.

Malta’s Ministry of Tourism has collaborated with Strong Universal Network (Sunx) to be the host of Sunx’s Global Centre for Climate Friendly Tourism in Malta. Sunx works with the travel and tourism sector to help them transform policies to climate friendly travel in line with the Paris agreement.

The Sunx Ambitions Registry, launching in 2020 will welcome countries, cities, communities and companies to voluntarily file plans to be part of the Sunx Paris 1.5-degree Community. This community will be invited to attend an annual Q1 ‘Think Tank’ event in Malta to reflect, discuss and share opportunities and challenges the travel and tourism sector may encounter in the lead up to 2050. https://www.facebook.com/konradmizzi/videos/2326281697451171/

Electric Cars

Malta will install 130 additional electric car charging points in the next few months, doubling the number that are currently installed. Malta has become synonymous with world-class summer music festivals. This year, Summerdaze reduced the festival’s waste by at least 70% and through the efforts of selling re-usable cups the event also raised more than €45,000 for the Marigold Foundation. The successful initiative will be repeated in 2020

Discover the religious heart of Maltese culture with the new Pilgrimage

September 9, 2019 by PressEditor

Malta Tourism Authority’s series of themed maps introduced a new addition this year; the Pilgrimage Trail, which showcases the most beautiful churches and religious spots across the archipelago. With more than 360 churches and chapels scattered across Malta and Gozo, the religious sites highlighted in the map form an integral part of the country’s history, landscape and skyline – they are at the heart of Maltese social and cultural life.

Malta is believed to be the first country to be converted to Christianity, when St Paul was shipwrecked on the Islands in AD 60. St. Paul’s grotto is still visited by thousands of tourists each year. Malta was ruled by the knights of St. John during the 16th and 18th centuries and today remains one of the most devout Catholic countries in the world.

The Pilgrimage Trail firmly plants the capital, Valletta, and the islands as one of Europe’s top pilgrimage hot spots and a must-visit religious destination for 2019.

Highlights include:

  • Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Valletta – the silhouette of the buildings 42-metre high oval dome dominates the skyline and is home to a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel dating back to the 17th century.
  • St John’s Co Cathedral, Valletta – The jaw dropping interior, elaborately created by Mattia Preti is widely considered to be the best example of baroque style in Europe. The magnificent cathedral is also home to the only signed Caravaggio painting in the world.
  • St Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina – Founded in the 17th century, the cathedral is widely believed to be a Lorenzo Gafa masterpiece. The cathedral stands tall in the middle of ‘the silent city’ and it’s façade impresses visitors as they emerge from Mdina’s narrow streets.
  • Cathedral of Assumption, Gozo – Dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, the impressive structure is situated in Cittadella of Victoria in Gozo. The church is more than 300 years old, completed 1711, and boasts a beautiful baroque exterior.
  • Our Lady on Ta’Pinu, Gozo – In 1883 a woman from the village of Għarb, Karmni Grima, heard the voice of Our Lady at the small chapel that then occupied this site. It rapidly became the center of pilgrimage and the number of visitors soon overwhelmed the little church. Today’s monumental shrine to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu was built between 1920 and 1931 and was heralded as an architectural masterpiece. The sanctuary was constructed in front of the original chapel.

Game of Thrones final season is here! See where it all began in Malta

April 4, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

As Game of Thrones approaches its final season, set to premiere on April 14, 2019, it’s a good time for die-hard fans to take a look at the first location where it all started, Malta. Often referred to as “the hidden gem of the Mediterranean,” Malta is not so hidden when it comes to Hollywood and if you’re a Game of Thrones fan you will remember that most of season one was filmed there.

The quest for power between the Houses of Stark, Baratheon, Lannister and Targaryen all started on the island of Malta. Malta offers tours to join local actors who took part in Season One of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones as they unravel the secrets and adventures of your favorite characters including Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Joffrey Baratheon and Cersei Lannister.

Step back in time as you travel to idyllic locations such as those used in the first season including the gardens of Kings Landing, the Red Waste, the Tower of the Hand, the Stables, Maegor’s Holdfast, the Red Keep, Cobblers Square, The Street of Steel, Baelish Brothels (ext), Coppersmith’s Wynd, King’s Gate, King’s Square, and the village of Lhazar (when accessible).

The Maltese Islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – have been home to Hollywood blockbusters such as Gladiator, U-571, The Count of Monte Cristo, Troy, Munich, Popeye, the movie set abandoned in 1980 which remains a huge tourist attraction in Malta, as well as prestigious dramas and sitcoms such as the BBC’s Byron and ITV’s Coronation Street to name a few. The island’s beautiful, unspoiled coastlines and breathtaking architecture have ‘doubled’ for an amazing variety of locations on the big and small screens – from ancient Rome to 19th-century Marseille and 1960’s Beirut. Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Wolfgang Petersen, Guy Ritchie and other renowned directors, as well as a host of A-list celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, Sharon Stone, Madonna and Sean Connery, all experienced Malta’s movie making facilities and its many charms.

The sunny islands of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, are home to a most remarkable concentration of intact built heritage, including the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any nation-state anywhere.  Valletta built by the proud Knights of St. John is one of the UNESCO sights and the European Capital of Culture for 2018.
