SEATTLE, Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Since its inception the historic scale and symmetry of the Pike Place Market entrance has been preserved (www.savethemarketentrance.org). Even 110 years after it opened the tallest building at the four corners of the market entrance is 3 stories. Now, a proposed hotel development would permanently distort the historic market entrance by demolishing the 3-story Hahn Building (103 Pike St., SE corner of 1st and Pike, home of the Green Tortoise Hostel) and replacing it with a modern 14-story hotel without parking.
Save The Market Entrance
The proposed hotel development at the corner of 1st and Pike will affect the market entrance and the surrounding neighborhood in several key ways:
- A permanent change in the scale and symmetry of the 4 corners of the market entrance
- Demolition of the Hahn building, which dates to the 1800s and has a rich cultural history in the city of Seattle
- Displacement of the affordable housing for visitors from across the globe provided by the Green Tortoise Hotel
- Increased traffic congestion at 1st and Pike due to the complete lack of parking associated with the proposed hotel and the street blockages that would occur due to the drop off and pick up of hotel guests on Pike Street, which has been reduced to one vehicle lane
The Pike Place Market is an iconic symbol of Seattle, recognized worldwide and visited by 16 million people per year. It is the heart and soul of Seattle and the cornerstone of the city’s tourism industry.
The Hahn building is integral to the market entrance, as indicated by the cobblestones at the 1st and Pike intersection that connect the Hahn building with the other three corners, all of which are home to historically significant buildings. At the time of the Pike Place Market’s founding in 1907 the current three-story Hahn Building was already standing.
If this project goes forward and the Hahn Building is torn down, it can’t be undone. The 4 corners of the market entrance will be changed forever.
