EXPERT ALERTS:

How Media Shapes Regional and National Public Opinion
Darryl Mace, PhD
Professor and Chair, History and Political Science
Cabrini University
“Protest versus riot; lynching versus murder; throughout history, the public receives information that is already framed for us. We must always consider who determines what is newsworthy and how certain narratives persist, are interrupted, or are silenced completely.”
As an author, historian, and professor, Mace incorporates media studies, popular culture, and gender theory to examine cultural history, the Civil Rights Movement, and the experiences of Africans in the diaspora. A national speaker and media resource, his insight into the lynching of Emmett Till provides a critical analysis of how media shapes regional and national public opinion. Similarly, his research on America’s greatest orations uncover the power of the spoken word to move people and effect significant political, social, and cultural changes. Mace is author of “In Remembrance of Emmett Till” (University Press of Kentucky, 2014) and editor of “American History Through Its Greatest Speeches, Volume 2” (ABC-CLIO, 2016). He is available to discuss Colonial race and gender, antebellum slavery, and 20th Century black history including African history, American political rhetoric, United States southern history, and African-American history, media studies, U.S. civil rights historiography and race-relations historiography.

Custody of Pets in Divorce Cases
Michael Ian Bender
Family Law Mediation/Litigation/Children’s Representative
Law Office of Michael Ian Bender
Many laws have gone into effect in 2018, but one Illinois law that hasn’t gotten as much attention as it deserves is the new law regarding pets in a divorce. On Jan. 1, a law went into effect regarding the custody of pets in divorce cases. Previously, pets had been treated much like any other material asset in a divorce, to be divided up in whatever way best balanced the scales. Now, however, judges are allowed and encouraged to consider the well-being of the pet when deciding which spouse will receive custody, in much the same way that custody of children is determined. Says Bender: “I am pleased that the legal system has finally addressed the issue of pets in divorce. As a retired judge myself, I often served on cases with pet-related conflicts. And now, as a private practice family law attorney who also happens to be animal lover, I’m happy to know that judges will look at pets as beloved members of the family.”
Bender re-opened The Law Office of Michael Ian Bender in December 2013 after retiring from his tenure as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, where he served the People of the State of Illinois and residents of Cook County. Bender was assigned to the Domestic Relations Division, Parentage and Child Support Section, where he heard matters involving child abuse, custody, support, parentage, visitation, and college contribution. During this time, he protected the rights of minor children. Prior to becoming a judge, Bender was in private practice for 15 years. He received recognition from the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys and the American Institute of Legal Counsel where he was voted one of the “10 Best” in his field. He is based in the Chicagoland area.

  • 3 WAYS TO HARNESS THE CREATIVE CHAOS AS A CONTENT CREATOR FOR HIRE. Creativity is perceived as something that can’t be taught — a spontaneous and unorganized spark that can strike at any moment. It can be a messy process, full of rewrites, crumpled pieces of paper, and maybe a panic attack or two. However, when creativity is your business, the inherent chaos must be tamed. Creativity can and should be a process that follows a defined set of procedures and steps. Employing the following steps won’t eliminate the drama completely, but should spare you the Greek tragedy that sometimes takes place behind the scenes: http://prn.to/2DDR00i
  • FIVE QUESTIONS WITH ZIG’S CEO AND CO-FOUNDER. With the debut of Zig, entrepreneur Joshua James wants to change the way people engage with and consume the news. Along with co-founders Adam Platzner and John Tornow, James launched the compelling new media platform earlier this month, and it’s already garnering big attention. Former Vanity Fair Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter, music producer Quincy Jones, and Live Nation are just some of the high-profile players backing the venture. For Carter, this is his first public project since leaving his post at Vanity Fair. In a recent news release, Carter says he wants to help the team how he can and believes the app “will find a wide and dedicated audience.” That’s likely because Zig promises to shake up the current ecosystem — one that has delivered mixed results for publishers in the past.
