The Lost Identity Group was founded at the last IIW to develop support for those individuals who have had their identities lost or stolen due to catastrophe and disasters and is now part of PCI’s Impact Network.
People First has been working closely over the past year with PCI co-founder Mei Lin Fung and other members of PCI and the Impact Network to support the Lost Identity Group initiatives.
“The Lost Identity Group has been steadily building its impact,” Fung said. “Fellow members have met with organizations in Puerto Rico, Sonoma and Napa Counties to understand the problems of lost identities.”
Neal O’Farrel, a member of the Identity Theft Council and the Lost Identity Group, said:
- “Last year alone saw around 200,000 cases of identity-related FEMA fraud nationwide. This interconnectedness, and a focused geo-tagging of disaster victims, seems to be accelerating a new and a very dangerous type of identity exploitation.”
- “Data stolen in data breaches can be very quickly cross-referenced by crooks with data on victims of natural disasters to make it very difficult for organizations like FEMA to tell whether an aid applicant is real or a fraud.”
People First Founder John Philpin went on to say, “IIW gives a unique opportunity to have collaborative discussions about how all of the many groups can contribute to resolving issues surrounding lost identity.”
