Mövenpick Resort Aswan leads the way on its green journey

GM Wael Allam of Movenpick Resort Aswan

Mövenpick Resort Aswan is located in an enchanting natural location on Elephantine island Aswan, an island in the middle of the Nile. The resort has retained the unique design of Egyptian civilization with a slight Nubian influence while offering modern conveniences.

Green Globe recently recertified Mövenpick Resort Aswan awarding the property an outstanding compliance score of 95%.

Mr. Wael Allam, the resort’s General Manager said, “The most impressive part of our Green Journey is seeing the growth in our sustainability practices especially reducing our environmental impact.

“Mövenpick Resort Aswan was proud to announce that we received an 86% compliance score upon our first certification in early 2011. Since then, steps taken to be sustainable has involved careful consideration about duplicating our efforts as well as looking for new initiatives to comply with sustainable standards whilst engaging with our community. At the same time, dedicated efforts to remain a pioneer as a sustainable employer in our city has enabled Mövenpick Resort Aswan to achieve Green Globe Certification for 8 consecutive years. Our efforts always focus on maintaining this success from year to year which makes us very proud of all our achievements.”

As a Green Globe certified hotel, Mövenpick Resort Aswan is internationally recognized as a property that constantly introduces initiatives with the aim to reduce and optimize its consumption of resources. The resort integrates its Environmental Management Systems (EMS) for energy, water and waste. The resort monitors and records energy and water utilities consumption on a daily basis. Data gathered is used to identify opportunities to reduce electricity, water and chemical usage and has led to the installation of small washing machines (10KG) that are used in place of bigger machines during low occupancy periods. Furthermore, as part of its sustainability management plan to reduce emissions and provide a healthier environment, fully charged electric cars are used by guests as an internal transportation vehicle around the island.

Each year the hotel Team harvests around 1200 kg of mango, lemons and fresh vegetables from the resort organic gardens. Some of harvest is donated to shelters for children in the city and the chef prepares other fresh organic produce to be served at hotel outlets.

Mövenpick Resort Aswan sponsors social initiatives in Aswan by donating to orphan shelters and Team members happily prepare for annual Orphan Day celebrations at the resort where they spend memorable hours with the children. The hotel also supports governmental educational programs and, through partnership with a leading Aswan hotel school, provides students with the chance to undergo practical training in resort operations. Finally, the property participates in initiatives with the renowned Resala, a charity foundation which works with 67 branches across Egypt caring for orphans, helping the blind, the deaf, children with special needs, supporting blood donations, poverty alleviation, and literacy training.

“Mövenpick Resort Aswan’s contribution to the economy and prosperity of our destination is demonstrated by our commitment to ensure that 100% of our employees are from Aswan and other parts of Egypt,” added Mr. Allam.

The property regularly offers Mövenpick training programs to provide employees with the support to achieve the highest levels of professionalism. This is reflected in the comments and reviews received from guests on social media and review sites. In 2018, Mövenpick Resort Aswan was welcomed into the TripAdvisor Certification program, an accolade granted only to hotels that have a high level of quality and standards according to the recommendation of guests.
