Gloria Hotel Dubai: A sustainable & environmental journey

Gloria Hotel in Dubai is a destination in itself, offering state-of-the-art meeting and event venues, spacious suites, a tranquil spa and advanced fitness area and an array of dining outlets and lounge with stunning city and sea views.

Green Globe recently recertified Gloria Hotel for the third consecutive year. Gloria Hotel scored 78% after an onsite audit conducted by UAE-based FARNEK, Green Globe’s preferred partner in the Middle East.

Freddy Farid, Area General Manager of Gloria Hotels and Resorts said, “Ever since we started our sustainability journey at Gloria Hotels, we realized that sustainability is no longer simply about reducing harm to the environment but taking on worthwhile initiatives that will benefit the environment. These actions then became part of our daily culture – you cannot move forward if you take more from the community than you put back into it. My team has realized this and accomplished our Green Globe aims.”

Gloria Hotel Dubai is committed to best environmental practices and supports many community programs as part of its business strategy. The hotel’s Green Globe champions are the driving impetus behind eco-friendly initiatives that engage all colleagues, guests and other stakeholders. The hotel has reduced its CO2 emissions by 4.27% and additionally offset 72.15 tons in 2017. The result is an increase of 12.35 tons from the previous year.

The newly completed EMS project has been implemented with the intention to save vast amounts of energy over 2018. The EMS will push environmental and sustainability programs to the next highest level. Recently installed LED lighting, the deployment of light & water sensors, and introduction of energy saving awareness programs have helped save 2,504.684 Megawatt hours of energy and 10,306.08 m3 of water.

A comprehensive waste management policy incorporating continuous efforts in waste segregation, sorting, recycling & processing resulted in savings of 171.84 tons of waste from being thrown into landfill. The placement of different colored recycling bins in public areas and meeting rooms has contributed to better efforts by staff and guests in recycling aluminum cans, papers, plastics and papers. The introduction of in-house color-coded plastic containers used in place of cardboard boxes from suppliers has also greatly improved the property’s recycling performance. Furthermore, food waste volume has dropped through the newly established food waste reduction and monitoring programs in restaurants. Total waste quantities decreased by 6.95% from 2016 to 2017.
