Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre Expands Focus on Digital Transformation in Tourism

The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) announced an expansion of its thematic focus to include building resilience for the digital transformation of tourism spaces and places.

This initiative  will be officially launched at the next Ed Bartlett Lecture Series on July 3, 2024, which will be held virtually and will center on “Building Digital Resilience in Tourism and Hospitality.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digitalization and digital transformation across various sectors, with tourism being no exception. Digital tools have become ubiquitous, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the industry. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and sensors are enhancing the experiences of tourists, while blockchain technology offers improved security measures. However, these advancements also bring concerns related to privacy, security, and misinformation.

“The rapid digital transformation in tourism necessitates a proactive approach to ensure that we not only harness the benefits but also effectively manage the associated risks. Our expanded focus will help stakeholders navigate this new digital landscape with confidence,” said Professor Lloyd Waller, Executive Director of the GTRCMC.

Recognizing the critical need to address these issues, the GTRCMC will focus on raising awareness and building capacity to mitigate threats and maximize the opportunities presented by digital transformation. Minister the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Co-Chairman of the GTRCMC and Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, added:

“Through this initiative, we aim to equip the tourism sector with the knowledge and resources needed to thrive in a digitally-driven world.”

The Ed Bartlett Lecture Series will provide a platform for industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss strategies and best practices for building digital resilience in tourism and hospitality. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions and gain valuable insights into leveraging digital transformation to enhance tourism experiences and operations.
