Nassau, Bahamas – Director General Latia Duncombe of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation is currently representing The Bahamas at the 1st Regional Conference on Women’s Empowerment in Tourism for Latin America and the Caribbean, taking place October 21-22, 2024, in Asunción, Paraguay. Organized by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Paraguay’s National Secretariat of Tourism (SENATUR), the event brings together regional leaders to advance discussions on women’s empowerment in the tourism industry.
Duncombe is participating in multiple sessions, including the High-Level Panel titled “Women’s Leadership in Tourism: Highlighting Achievements and Recognising the Challenges of Women Leaders in the Tourism Sector.” Across these sessions, she is highlighting the achievements of women in leadership and addressing the barriers women face in climbing the professional ranks within the tourism industry.
The conference agenda also covers key topics, including women’s entrepreneurial roles in tourism and the opportunities for micro, small, and medium-sized tourism enterprises (MSMEs) in the global market. These discussions are essential to addressing economic empowerment, access to financing, training, and leadership opportunities for women in tourism.
“Empowering women across the region is key to unlocking the full potential of our tourism sector and ensuring its long-term sustainability,” said Duncombe. “This conference provides a platform to address these barriers and drive meaningful change, ensuring women have a larger role in shaping the future of tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Duncombe’s participation not only showcases The Bahamas’ leadership in promoting inclusive tourism practices but also reinforces its commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for women at every level of the industry, both regionally and globally.
