Sandals Resorts International Announces Scholarship and Conservation Effort Honoring the Legacy of Founder and Chairman Gordon

February 4, 2021 by PressEditor

In one of his first initiatives as Sandals Resorts International’s Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart has announced the creation of The Gordon “Butch” Stewart Tourism & Hospitality Scholarship, fostering the power of education to develop the next generation of Caribbean tourism leaders in honor of the Honorable Gordon “Butch” Stewart O.J, C.D, Hon. LLD.

“My father fiercely believed in the power of possibility; he understood and celebrated the ability of people to rise above their potential and accomplish great things,” said Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “This scholarship’s core mission is to ensure a strong future for the Caribbean hotel industry by fueling the talent pipeline with opportunity – a true reflection of my father’s passion for the region and its potential.  That’s why I am delighted to honor his memory and the example he set by empowering our team members to dream big and dream bright.”

Funded through contributions raised by the Sandals Foundation, the brand’s non-profit philanthropic arm aimed at making a difference in the lives of the Caribbean people, the eponymous scholarship is available to full-time team members who will be evaluated based on their financial needs, personal attributes, and success in their current role. Working alongside the esteemed Sandals Corporate University (SCU) and in partnership with local colleges and universities, recipient(s) of the scholarship will be eligible to receive funding for up to a four-year college program in hospitality and tourism. Applications will be accessible through the SCU starting June 1, 2021.

“When we launched the Sandals Foundation in 2009, we did so to put a formal face to the philanthropic efforts my father championed since he opened the doors of Sandals Montego Bay in 1981. It’s my honor now to ‘formalize’ this scholarship in his name, cementing his passion for mentorship and his profound desire to elevate the promise of the Caribbean,” said Stewart.

In addition to the scholarship program, those wishing to help honor the late Gordon “Butch” Stewart and his love of the region he called home, can do so by donating to support the marine conservation efforts of the Sandals Foundation. Through the creation and management of coral nurseries and marine sanctuaries, and by partnering with local community groups for mangrove restoration and turtle conservation, the Sandals Foundation has helped to restore and sustain the delicate marine ecosystems the world has come to know and love. Additionally, the Foundation has continued its commitment to work alongside local schools and educators to integrate marine education in their curriculum, spearhead hands-on field trips to protected areas, and engage residents in coastal communities on proper solid waste management programs to ensure the presence of environmental stewards for years to come.

According to Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, “The late Chairman was most at home when on the water.  He had an unshakeable love for the Caribbean Sea and over the years, greatly contributed to marine conservation throughout the region,” said Clarke. “Mr. Stewart has impacted so many people across the globe, and his legacy will live on as we continue to strengthen our partnerships and communities to be positive change makers.”

Sandals Resorts International and the Sandals Foundation will continue to do their part in furthering Gordon “Butch” Stewart’s passion for philanthropy by educating the region’s people, providing the necessary tools and funds to further professional goals, and implementing initiatives to protect the islands he loved so much.

OTDYKH Leisure Expo to Give Start to Tourism Recovery with its 27th Edition from 7-9 September 2021 in Expocentre Fairgrounds

February 3, 2021 by PressEditor

The 27th OTDYKH Leisure Expo is pleased to announce that the 2021 Leisure Fair will be opening its doors in September, as national and international experts predict positive forecasts for the return of tourism this year. As anti-COVID-19 restrictions are gradually eased over the coming months, this will allow a steady increase in national and international travel, breathing new life into the global tourism industry. By December 2021, some sources predict that international travel restrictions will have been significantly lifted, allowing for major winter destinations to capitalize on the holiday season.

The Association of Tour Operators (ATOR) has indicated that by September 2021, the volume of sales in all types of tourism will correspond to the levels seen in the summer of 2017. Research done by the company Topdeck Travel identified that 93% of young people surveyed expressed that spending months in quarantine throughout the pandemic has in fact increased their desire to travel. In an emerging trend known as ‘rebound travel’, intrepid travelers are predicted to make a decisive come-back on the travel scene following months of restrictions.

In the meantime, travel operators are fast adapting and finding creative ways to accommodate safe, socially distanced travel experiences. Some companies have even turned to technology to provide online travel experiences, allowing people to participate in virtual tours or cultural activities from the comfort of their own homes. Although it is not yet possible to make concrete forecasts regarding post-pandemic tourism, by the second half of 2021, much more information will available to those in the travel industry on anti-COVID-19 restrictions and tourism trends.

In 2020 OTDYKH became the first major tourism event in Russia to open its door since the pandemic began. Despite the event being much smaller than usual, it was a huge success and received excellent reviews:

“I would especially like to note the professional event organization. The OTDYKH team managed to hold an excellent event despite these challenging times,” said Mr. Denis Ivlev, Director of “Altayturcenter.”

Over the course of three days, the 2020 26th edition of the expo featured over 260 exhibitors from 40 Russian regions, over 5,500 travel industry experts, 30 business events with over 160 Russian and international speakers. The fair organizer Euroexpo made sure to conduct the expo in a safe and professional manner, providing high standards of hygiene to prevent the spread of infection and to protect exhibitors and visitors alike.

For the first time in the history of the exhibition, organizers successfully debuted a new hybrid format, offering both real and virtual exhibition packages. Among the online services offered were lives streams of the meetings, conference sessions and presentations, which were made available to participants via the OTDYKH website and social media platforms.

This hybrid format will be enlisted for the 2021 expo, with virtual and in-person packages available, to make sure the event is accessible to all. At present, the fair is the only hybrid tourism exhibition in Moscow.

Over 35 countries and regions of Russia have already confirmed that they will be participating in the 2021 fair, including Thailand, Tunisia, Spain and Cuba, and the Russian regions of the Republics of Altai and Khakassia, Krasnodar Territory, Voronezh, Kostroma and Nizhny Novgorod.

Early bird registration is now open for the 27th edition of the OTDYKH Travel Expo, with remote and physical participation packages on offer.

The OTDYKH Leisure Fair will take place on 7-9 September 2021, at the Expocentre in Moscow, Russia.

Several Local Entrepreneurs to Benefit from New Artisan Village – Bartlett

February 2, 2021 by PressEditor

Jamaica Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has revealed that more than 60 small- and medium-sized entrepreneurs are set to reap economic benefits whenever normalcy returns to the tourism sector, as they are slated to secure coveted shop spaces at the modern artisan village being created in Falmouth, Trelawny.

He said work was ongoing with various partners to bring back tourism to the Georgian town as quickly as possible and it is anticipated that when cruise shipping returns the pioneer tenants will be in place to offer a unique experience.

The Ministry of Tourism, through the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), is covering the construction cost for the Artisan Village and Minister Bartlett was recently updated on its progress during a visit with a technical team. The construction is being overseen by the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) on whose property it is being built, in close proximity to the Falmouth Cruise Ship Pier.

The $750 million earmarked for the artisan village programme is providing 64 shops and facilities for food and entertainment as well as artisans at work. Mr. Bartlett believes “it is an investment well worth it. It will be the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean and is going to enable us to have space for production and marketing, with a mix of cultural assets that Jamaica has, to be presented to the visitors when they come here.”

“It is very important that we have artisans here so that when the visitors come, they can have a design that they give to an artisan, proceed on their tour and on their return collect a truly authentic finished product to take onboard the ship with them,” said Minister Bartlett.

He sees this as a good marketing tool with visitors leaving with an authentic piece of Jamaica that will serve as a lasting symbol of their visit, while creating a desire among family and friends to also enjoy the unique experience that the destination provides.

“We want to be an integral part of that experience that is transmissible to the wider world through the people who come with items of jewelry, fashion and craft that will be made at the village and shown to a wider audience when they are worn by the purchasers, or presented as gifts,” he stated.

Adding to the already picturesque Georgian town of Falmouth, the new Artisan Village offers another architecturally beautiful landmark in close proximity to the cruise ship pier.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic causing some disruption in the construction industry, early imposition of safety protocols allowed for work to continue on site, but at a slower pace to ensure conformity.

The artisan village will carry a theme as “we’re making this into a really iconic attraction by itself,” said Minister Bartlett who outlined that “we are pulling on our culture, focusing on the history of the Falmouth area by characterizing its myths and storylines.”

While small and medium entrepreneurs will occupy the facility, management is also seen as an important factor. Minister Bartlett said “we’re going to go to the market for good managers for the project overall” as the government expects it to be properly and effectively managed and not go to waste. He expects that the tenants will also manage their areas effectively and grow their businesses.

Bartlett Consoles Smith Family on the Passing of Transportation Pioneer Ralph Smith

January 29, 2021 by PressEditor

Jamaica Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett has expressed deep regret at the passing of tourism and transportation pioneer, Ralph Smith.

“I was very saddened to learn about the passing of Ralph Smith. We will never forget his kindness and invaluable contributions. On behalf of the Government of Jamaica, I offer my sincere condolences to the entire Smith family. I pray that the love of those around you will provide some comfort and support during this period of grief,” said Minister Bartlett.

Smith is considered by many in the industry as a pioneer of modern ground transportation. He founded Tropical Tours, which is one of the largest transportation companies in the island’s tourism sector, more than 45 years ago.

He is also credited for introducing several leading international tour operators to the island such as First Choice/ TUI, Hotel Plan, Maxi Tours and Maxi Coverage Company Sun Wing.

“Mr. Smith was a brilliant businessman. His passion for tourism and the transportation industry is truly unmatched. I am certain his legacy will live on for years to come. I pray that his soul will be at peace with our Heavenly Father,” said Mr. Bartlett.

For his contribution to the development of tourism in Jamaica, he was in 2005 bestowed the Order of Distinction. He is also a Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) Lifetime Achievement awardee and his company, Tropical Tours, has received a number of awards from the JHTA over the years.

Smith is a former member of the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and a past president of the Jamaica Association of Tour Operators (JATO).

Prime Minister & Tourism Minister Welcome Investment in New Negril Attraction

January 29, 2021 by PressEditor

Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett have welcomed the latest investment of just under US$1.5 million in the tourism sector’s latest innovative attraction, the Red Stripe Experience at Ricks Café, Negril.

Ground was broken yesterday (January 27), for the iconic experience, which is slated to be ready for the leisure market in October 2021, offering an interactive audio-visual tour that captures the history of two world renowned brands, the acclaimed Red Stripe Beer and the award-winning Rick’s Café, interwoven into Jamaica’s exciting cultural mix.

In welcoming the investment, Prime Minister Holness urged tourism interests to make similar cash injections to improve their existing properties, amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. “It is also the time to look at your plant and get it up to scratch. Now is the time to do all those physical changes to the plant that you couldn’t do while you have guests,” he expressed.

Minister Bartlett indicates that he is particularly pleased with investments such as that being made by Red Stripe, which will capitalize on the island’s natural assets by leveraging its culture and heritage to tell the authentic Jamaican story.  “Attractions like these will get visitors out of the hotels to experience the real Jamaica,” he outlined.

Welcoming the ground-breaking for the Red Stripe Experience at Rick’s Café as an example of the vision and investor confidence needed to jumpstart Jamaica’s post-COVID-19 recovery, Minister Bartlett said the pandemic-induced crisis was severely testing resilience across all sectors of the economy. However, he says there was a choice in facing this major test, of either being defeated or rising to the challenge.

Pre-pandemic the tourism industry was experiencing record growth, being responsible for 9.5% of GDP in 2019, contributing 50% of foreign exchange earnings and generating some 354,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs. “The Jamaica Tourist Board’s preliminary figures for 2020 indicate that we welcomed 1,297,094 visitors, comprising of 847,823 stopover arrivals and 449,271 cruise passenger arrivals, which brought in some US$1.3 billion in earnings. This represents just a fraction of 2019’s 4.3 million visitors and US$3.7 billion in earnings,” he emphasized.

“Despite the pandemic-induced setbacks, there is no doubt that the tourism players have an unwavering desire to bounce back. It is going to be a slow and arduous process, but we are doing everything we possibly can to get the tourism industry fully back on track, more hotels and attractions open and more workers back on the job,” assured Minister Bartlett.

Mr. Bartlett said the pandemic had forced a rethink of strategies and charting of a new course towards effective recovery and sustainable development.

“Investment will be key to our recovery effort as we seek to uncover hidden opportunities in tourism amid the COVID-era economic crisis. I am therefore pleased that investors continue to show confidence in the Jamaican tourism market and are finishing projects already started,” he said.

Sandals Foundation partners with Jabez House Feed A Family Food Drive

January 28, 2021 by PressEditor

Continuing Gordon “Butch” Stewart’s legacy of love, the Sandals Foundation has steadfastly kept marching and giving through storms, pandemics, and the passing of it’s founder. Taking up the helm is Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals and Beaches Resorts, the company founded by his father.

Just this past month, the warmth of the holiday season for vulnerable households across Barbados were a little more special following the Sandals Foundation joining the Jabez House Feed A Family Food Drive and extending the reach and impact of the initiative.

In addition to the 22 female-led families supported by Jabez House, sponsorship from the Sandals Foundation saw an additional 20 households from 2 registered charities – Breaking Bread and The H.U.R.T. (Help Us Reach Them) Initiative – receive care packages comprising food items and ingredients to supplement their yuletide meals.

Patrice Gilpin, Public Relations Manager at Sandals Foundation, said the Jabez House outreach partnership forms part of its continued effort to support the welfare needs of Caribbean communities.

“This has been an extraordinary year for families across the region. Since March, we’ve worked with numerous organizations to distribute more than one thousand care packages to help people meet some of their basic needs,” Gilpin said.

Christmas, Gilpin continued, “is a time which beckons us all to take a closer look around us and see how we can each support another. Every little count in helping to bring joy and a sense of love to those who need it the most.”

Shamelle Rice, Founder and Director at Jabez House, expressed gratitude for the continued support of the Food Drive which is now celebrating its 3rd year.

“We are extremely grateful to all our partners and families who have consistently come on board to purchase, pack, and donate to our ladies. Christmas can be a particularly challenging time of the year for many of the clients we serve and their children. Making a difference to ensure they can have a smile on their faces on Christmas Day is very precious to us,” Rice said.

Mr. Ramel Sobrino, General Manager of the Sandals Resorts who led a team of volunteers, including Resort Manager Mr. Patrick Drake and Public Relations Manager Mr. David Hinds who helped pack and prepare the packages, said the service project will undoubtedly bring a welcome relief.

“It is our duty as a resort to do what we can to serve the communities in which we call home. We will continue to engage our team members to be active change makers and engage our guests to support solutions.”

“Jabez House,” Sobrino continued, “has been a shining light in the lives of the ladies they support and  knowing that the benefiting families will have a good Christmas is reward enough for all of us at Sandals.”

The Sandals Foundation has been a longstanding partner of Jabez House, helping to engage more than 60 women through targeted skills training and economic empowerment opportunities since 2018.

Continued financing of the skills training program engages Jabez House clients in Hair Braiding and Weaving, Nail Technology, Make-Up Artistry, Business Basics courses, and more.

This year, the Sandals Foundation also provided support to the Counseling Support and Life Coaching programs which provided mental wellness support to better cope with personal trauma and the evolving psychological stresses exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
