LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Outright exactness is demanding when accounting for the potential of human error. This circumstance can be a conclusive factor in surgeries, where one miniscule hand movement can end a life. To prevent this, Intuitive Surgical has crossed the threshold in scientific surgical innovation: robot-assisted surgery.
Under a contract for the U.S. Department of Defense, the first robotic surgical system prototype was created in the 1980s to be utilized during battlefield surgeries. However, in 2000, Intuitive Surgical became the first company cleared by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to create these advanced tools for commercial use.
Referred to as the da Vinci Surgical system, the robotic tool is comprised of a surgeon console, patient-side cart, endowrist instruments and a vision system to aid surgeons in performing complex procedures with only a few small incisions. Currently, the da Vinci surgical system is approved to perform minimally invasive surgeries in cardiac urologic, gynecologic, and pediatric procedures, among others.
Although the robotic arms are what technically cut, clamp, and dissect during the procedure, it’s the surgeon situated in the console that masterminds the entire surgery. In real-time, the system translates a surgeon’s hand movements to the robotic arms with whatever endowrist instruments—such as suction and clamp—they choose to utilize. These instruments are superior to human hands due to their seven degrees of motion.
To connect the surgeon to the patient, a high definition 3D endoscope relays real images to the surgeon throughout the process. This display has the ability to be connected to larger ones that allow for multiple spectators. It is this vision system that is instrumentally vital to a successful surgery; it is the only way in which the surgeon actually sees. Therefore, vision systems are thoroughly checked for repair and re-calibration, as there is potential for loss of life if not adequately maintained.
