Museum Of Science And Industry, Chicago Exhibits Offer Timely Look At Robots, Climate Change, Doomsday Clock And More

Turn Back the Clock, created in partnership with the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists,” focuses on the iconic Doomsday Clock—marking its 70^th anniversary—and the urgency of major challenges in our world today: nuclear weapons and climate change. Turn Back the Clock teaches guests about the intersection of science and policy around how the nuclear age has shaped our world with compelling personal stories, interactive media, artifacts and models. Open through early 2018. 

Imagining the Museum allows guests to learn how MSI has brought world-class exhibits to life for more than 80 years through more than 70 never-before-seen sketches, 3D models and design renderings including U-505, Science Storms and Smart Home. Open through early 2018.

Extreme Ice illustrates the immediacy of climate change and how it is already altering our world through the work of American photographer James Balog. Through stunning photographic documentation and time-lapse videography of glaciers, Extreme Ice provides guests a visual representation of climate change. Open through early 2019.

MSI Hosts National Ice Cream Day Celebration Throughout Chicago
In celebration of National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 16, the Museum has partnered with Nitro Dessert Station by Polonia Catering to showcase the science of ice cream. MSI and Nitro Dessert Station will make stops around Chicago between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., unveiling the science behind ice cream as experts use liquid nitrogen to create customized flavors for three stops, including:

• 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Guaranteed Rate Field for White Sox Family Sunday
• 1:45 – 2:45 p.m.: Celebrity chef Graham Elliot will be onsite at MSI to share his custom creation with guests
• 4 – 5 p.m.: Maggie Daley Park

MSI Giant Dome Theater Unveils New Technology
In addition to hands-on exhibits, MSI guests can be among the first in the country to experience the new, state-of-the-art technology in the Giant Dome Theater (formerly Omnimax^® Theater), Chicago’s only giant dome theater. The following movies will run throughout the summer: 

• Amazon Adventure, a new film based on a true story about the life of explorer Henry Bates, documents Henry’s incredible 11-year journey through the Amazon rainforest.
• Dream Big, is a returning film narrated by Academy Award® winner Jeff Bridges. The film celebrates human ingenuity and innovation, revealing the creativity that drives engineers to create better lives for people and a more sustainable future.

Guest Favorites
Brick by Brick features more than a dozen engineering marvels—completely rendered in LEGO bricks—built by Chicago native and LEGO® Certified Professional Adam Reed Tucker. See a 60-foot-long Golden Gate Bridge, magical Cinderella’s Castle, Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic Fallingwater, the Great Pyramids of Giza, and more. Guest have hands-on opportunities to learn more about architecture and engineering, including building their own LEGO creations and assembling structures to withstand winds! Not included in Museum Entry and requires an additional, timed-entry ticket ($12 for adults, $9 for kids 3-11). Open through December 2017.

Numbers In Nature: A Mirror Maze is an interactive and immersive exhibit that exposes and explains the mathematical patterns that abound in the natural world—from the delicate nested spirals of a sunflower’s seeds, to the ridges of a majestic mountain range, to the layout of the Universe—providing a unique perspective of our daily surroundings. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 1,800-square-foot elaborate mirror maze that allows guests to explore and navigate a seemingly infinite repeating pattern of mirrors. Permanent exhibit.

Coal Mine, one of the Museum’s first exhibits, takes guests on a 30-minute-tour of a lifelike Illinois coal mine. Guests descend into a mineshaft, ride on the rails and learn about the evolution of coal-mining technology. Permanent exhibit.

U-505 Submarine is the only German U-boat captured during World War II and one of only five U-boats left in the world. This National Historic Landmark has been at the Museum since 1954 and is the centerpiece of a 35,000-square-foot interactive exhibit. Guests will be captivated by the submarine’s capture and technology through different artifacts, veteran testimonies, interactive challenges and an optional on-board tour. Permanent exhibit.

Year-Round Learning
MSI recently kicked off its yearly Summer Brain Games series, which offers fun, easy at-home science experiments, helping to combat summer brain drain and experience MSI at home. Over an eight-week period, there will be fun and engaging science experiments for families using items they already have at home, including:

• Elephant’s Toothpaste: Create your superhero origin story with this oozing, and safe, chemical reaction.
• Air Cannon: Use physics to control the wind and knock down obstacles using just a cup and a balloon.
• Comeback Can: Make your friends think you can control objects with your mind using a can, twist tie, a rubber band and a hex nut.

The Museum is proud to be a part of the Museums for All program. MSI offers free Museum Entry to individuals and families presenting an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card or a Women, Infants and Children (WIC) card, along with a photo ID. Each card holder is entitled to up to two adult Museum Entry tickets and up to six child (under 18) Museum Entry tickets.
