“Reports show that the current uniforms are still causing serious health issues for Flight Attendants, and American management must fix it now,” said Sara Nelson, AFA International President. “An entire recall of the uniform is in order. American needs to source and manufacture a different uniform entirely for Flight Attendants and thoroughly test the pieces to avoid a repeat of the same issues.”
AFA has a team of experts working with our leaders at the American Eagle carriers to address the issues of our members and ensure their health comes first. AFA has uniform health reports from over 16 percent of the Flight Attendant population at American’s three wholly-owned subsidiaries, Envoy, PSA and Piedmont.
In March 2017, AFA sent 14 uniform garments for independent testing. The results showed various irritants, sensitizers, and known carcinogens in the fabrics. This confirmed the uniforms can cause serious health issues and AFA pressed management to immediately and safely recall the toxic uniforms.
The Association of Flight Attendants is the Flight Attendant union. Focused 100 percent on Flight Attendant issues, AFA has been the leader in advancing the Flight Attendant profession for 71 years. Serving as the voice for Flight Attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill, AFA has transformed the Flight Attendant profession by raising wages, benefits and working conditions. Nearly 50,000 Flight Attendants come together to form AFA, part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afacwa.org.
