#jetski Wins Oscar Night and Boosts the $600 Million Personal Watercraft Industry According to Freedonia Analyst

CLEVELAND, March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Every year, one of the complaints during awards season is that the acceptance speeches are boring and too long, making the show, itself, run overtime.

However, for the 90th Academy Awards presented on March 4, host Jimmy Kimmel proposed a new idea: shortest speech wins a jet ski.  In his opening monologue, he offered a bright green 2018 ULTRA 310LX Jet Ski from Kawasaki for the prize. For extra effect, it was shown by award-winning actress Helen Mirren

The company got extra publicity as Oscar winners either claimed to be making their effort to win the Jet Ski or teased that they knew they’d never win because their “thank you” list was too long.

Ultimately, Mark Bridges, the Oscar-winning costume designer of Phantom Thread, was revealed as the winner when he appeared on stage wearing a lifejacket over his tuxedo seated on the Jet Ski with Helen Mirren.

According to Freedonia Group analyst Dan Debelius, “Anything that gets people talking about your product in a positive way is a good thing. Kawasaki, with its Jet Ski products, is one of the top three suppliers of personal watercraft, along with Bombardier Recreational Products, the manufacturer of Sea-Doo craft, and Yamaha, which makes WaveRunner products.”

He continues, “In 2017, 63,000 personal watercraft were sold in the US. In general, these watercraft appeal to younger, more active water sports enthusiasts. The development of the Rec Lite category, which includes lighter weight and more affordable models, further boosts that trend.”

Debelius adds, “However, the ongoing development of more powerful and larger models, with added features, will further sales at the higher end of the market. A number of models are suitable for use by a family of riders, including three or four passengers – Helen Mirren, not included.”
