WCCCD City Center Breaks Ground On Downtown Campus

DETROIT, Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Wayne County Community College broke ground today on a new $25 million building that will focus on health, wellness, education and real-world career opportunities.  The new WCCCD City Center will be located on Fort Street and Howard, next to the WCCCD Downtown Campus.  Completion of the facility is scheduled for spring, 2019.

City Center is the final construction project laid out in the District’s Pathways to Transformation strategic plan. That plan led to the completion of additional campuses and campus extensions including the Mary Ellen Stempfle University Center in Harper Woods, the Michigan Institute for Public Safety Education (MIPSE) and the Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center (EPAC) located at the Downriver Campus.

“City Center ushers in a new era in providing the resources and infrastructure for interdisciplinary programs. We have always worked to provide pathways to better lives for our students and the construction of this site allows us to add tremendous value to the region in addition to training students who both want and need to excel in their careers,” said Ivery.  “City Center will also provide a home for the College’s Wildcat Basketball team along with other athletic activities and entertainment events.”

Programs offered at the $25 million dollar facility include biotechnology, hydroponics, aquaponics, fitness training, sports management, sports medicine and kinesiology.

“Our students will reap the benefits of many years of planning and preparation,” said Mary Ellen Stempfle, WCCCD Board of Trustees Chairman. “We are most proud of the execution of our Transformation Plan.  The District over the past twenty years has managed hundreds of millions of dollars on capital improvement projects with every single initiative coming on board, on time and within budget.  This is a masterful accomplishment that compliments the professionalism of the entire executive team of this administration.”

Hannah- Neumann/Smith is the architect for the City Center.  The Tooles Group is the project’s construction firm.  The WCCCD City Center is scheduled to open in 2019.
