The Abu Dhabi Municipality has ordered the demolition of 44 abandoned buildings in a bid to beautify the Capital. Some of these buildings have been brought down, and the municipality is working to remove the remaining ones.
The demolished buildings, including villas and multi-level buildings, many of which were constructed way back in the 1970s, lacked the required safety standards.
Demolition of old buildings is done by reputable contractors who are required to follow hazard control and safety measures in bringing down these premises.
> Adequate and continuous barricading and edge protection is required at buildings to prevent fall from heights. Also workers are not allowed inside building during demolition.
> A safe net protection system is required to protect pedestrians, public, properties and adjacent buildings from falling objects. Operative cabin with shatterproof glass and protective cage also need to be at the site.
The municipality said it had identified 90 abandoned buildings within the Abu Dhabi Island, comprising 10 multi-level buildings, 66 villas, 10 government buildings and four private buildings.
“The municipality is taking appropriate action towards issuing the necessary administrative decisions to deal with each building on merit,” the civic body said in a statement. “The Monitoring and Inspection Division at the City Municipal Centre is monitoring abandoned buildings marring the general appearance, and notifying owners to maintain, occupy or demolish the buildings.”
The municipality is currently reviewing all buildings across the Capital to ensure that they meet with the city’s new building codes and are in conformity with Abu Dhabi’s smart vision 2030.

Since the start of 2018, the Abu Dhabi Municipality has issued 33 offences under the abandoned property law, and 11 for failure to carry out necessary maintenance.
Notices have been placed for the vacation, demolition or maintenance of 64 buildings of different types.
According to the municipality, populated aged buildings – which constitute an impending danger – are treated like abandoned buildings.
Buildings targeted under the removal campaign include buildings abandoned for prolonged periods and constituting eyesores in districts and streets.
Authorities said these buildings have become a burden and a source of inconvenience for residents due to the accumulated dust and waste, growth of weeds, and the breeding of insects and rodents.
