Haiti – Tourism : The Minister of Tourism concerned
Marie Christine Stephenson Minister of Tourism condemns the demonstration of students from several high schools in the administrative centre, who after walking in a number of streets of Port-au-Prince demonstrated Friday afternoon in the parking large amount of the Marriott hotel in Turgeau (Port-au-Prince), blocking by their presence, the access of the building to both customers and visitors of the hotel.
With tree branches and signs at hand, the students, dressed up in their uniforms, chanting slogans hostile to the national government, claimed, among other activities, of the January 2010 earthquake the rebuilding of these schools damaged through the passage. The learning students, however, didn’t cause any harm, beyond a clear nuisance to the tourism sector.
In an email of reactions, Minister Stephenson expresses her frustration “We learned with dismay of the events that occurred at the Marriot Hotel on October 12, 2018 […] that taint the image of the national tourism industry.
We remind the general public that the complete staff of the Ministry, supported by private sector partners, is attempting to supply the Nation with quality hotel facilities that donate to our common economic growth […]
We ask everyone to aid the effort to improve our image by respecting the private properties that hotels represent, essential elements to ensure any development of the tourism sector.”
