Royal Caribbean arrives to warm welcome in Grand Bahama

June 21, 2021 by PressEditor

With lively Junkanoo performances and celebrations, government officials and key business leaders welcomed Royal Caribbean International with open arms on Friday, June 18, as Adventure of the Seas completed its inaugural homeporting ceremony in Grand Bahama Island, with 1,000 eager passengers.

Following a 16-month hiatus due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions, the return of cruising to Grand Bahama Island marks a pivotal moment for the local community. It signals the commitment to revitalization following the economic challenges first introduced by the devasting impact of Hurricane Dorian and then worsened amid the global pandemic shutdowns. Freeport Harbour is thrilled to serve as the newest homeport destination responsible for major provisioning and refueling before the vessel returns to Nassau.

Delivering the keynote remarks at the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis said, “Following 16 months of anxiety, uncertainty, lockdown and restrictions, people across the world are eager to venture abroad, to new frontiers, not only for escape, but for healing. Grand Bahama is, indeed, most gratified to be a refuge of healing. Its beaches, vast stretches of ecological wonderlands and rich culture will prove to be a healing balm to the thousands of Adventure of the Seas passengers who are expected to embark on Grand Bahama over the next three months.”

“We believe this homeporting project will have an immediate impact on the rebound of the Bahamian economy. We express our collective gratitude towards our partners at Royal Caribbean for the long-standing relationship spanning more than 50 years,” said the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, Bahamas Minister of Tourism & Aviation.

Grand Bahama’s proximity to South Florida contributes to its position as a popular tourism destination and a favourite port of call for longer Caribbean cruises. Visitors can enjoy the nation’s second largest city, Freeport, which boasts upscale resorts, life-changing cultural and historic sites, as well as ecological wonders. From the culinary explorations, scenic island taxi tours and crystal-clear water excursions, the adventures are endless for passengers once ashore.

Adventure of the Seas debuted its seven-night getaways from Nassau on June 12, which feature two back-to-back days of thrills at Perfect Day at CocoCay, adventures in Cozumel and a full day of unwinding on Grand Bahama’s white-sand beaches every Saturday throughout the summer.

Those daydreaming about their next vacation can book a ticket aboard the exciting Adventure of the Seas. The final departure is scheduled for September 11, 2021. Travelers are encouraged to visit Bahamas.com/travelupdates for an overview of The Bahamas’ latest travel and entry protocols before booking.

Grand Bahama: Where It’s Always Shark Week

September 1, 2020 by PressEditor

The runaway success of The Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” has led to a newfound love, respect and admiration for these majestic creatures of the deep blue.  “Shark Week” has been described as “Discovery’s Super Bowl” since it brings in an expansive audience globally, and it is one of the highest rated weeks for the Discovery Channel and for the industry. Now in its 32nd edition, the season premiere “Tyson vs Jaws: Rumble on the Reef” garnered almost 2 Million US viewers, according to Nielsen ratings, and featured the boxer diving with sharks near Grand Bahama Island (GBI) in order to overcome his fears.

The resonant image of sharks stems from the man-eater portrayal that was perpetuated by the iconic movie “Jaws”. However, along with the advent of technology and social media, “Shark Week” deserves credit for dispelling the misconceptions about this maligned creature, and recognizing its critical role in balancing ecosystems and the ocean’s health.  These are vulnerable animals that are nowhere near the threat to humans that they have been perceived to be, but rather, are themselves at risk due to over-fishing, coastal destruction and pollution.

Where Every Week is “Shark Week”

Diving with sharks was pioneered by UNEXSO on GBI and they are considered to be the leader in this field.  These thrilling dives are guided by staff who are experts in shark behavior and conservation. Participants receive briefings with accurate information about shark behavior and highlights of interesting facts about these misunderstood creatures. At UNEXSO’s Shark Junction, the dive features experienced staff feeding and interacting with sharks of all sizes.  The main objective of the dive is for guests to gain a new appreciation of these magnificent and beautiful animals and understand the need for increased conservation measures.

Cristina Zenato, a diver affiliated with UNEXSO, has been diving and living in the Bahamas for 25 years. She has personally created a more meaningful and deeper interaction and understanding of sharks. On a dive she encountered a shark with a hook attached to its mouth and she couldn’t refrain from helping the creature out, so she inserted her hand in its mouth to remove the hook.  The shark returned to her side and became docile.  Shortly after, she noticed other sharks showing up with hooks in their mouths for removal. So far, she has removed over 300 hooks and she is convinced that the sharks communicate and show up for her help.  According to Cristina, her parents told her “There are no monsters in the sea, only the ones we make up in our heads”.

Where Every Week is “Shark Week”

Cristina also founded People of the Water (POW), which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing people’s relationship with our aquatic world through exploration, education and conservation.  A major project they conducted involved surveying and mapping the underwater systems of Ben’s Cave on GBI.  The survey was done with modern tools and they created an easily accessible digital map.  They also added 3,000 more feet of diving guide line, extending the total to 34,000 feet.  In the process they also added two new entrances in the mangrove area.  She also submitted a proposal to the Bahamas National Trust to expand the boundaries of the Lucayan National park on GBI to include a full extension of the cave, the land forest and the mangrove area.

The work on GBI by both UNEXSO and POW highlights the progressive actions of those organizations to widen the conduction and training, education, research and studies relating to water, ocean and environmental issues, affecting both the people and animals of those environments.

The Bahamas Tracking Hurricane Isaias

August 1, 2020 by PressEditor

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation continues to track the progress of Hurricane Isaias, a Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane warnings have been discontinued for the Central and Southeast Bahamas, however, a hurricane warning remains in effect for the Northwest islands. This includes Andros, New Providence, Eleuthera, Abaco, Grand Bahama, Bimini and The Berry Islands.

Hurricane Isaias has slowed slightly and continues to move toward the northwest at about 12 miles per hour. On the forecast track, the center of the storm will move through the vicinity of Fresh Creek, Andros this morning and continue to move near or over the rest of

Northwestern Bahamas later today

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 miles per hour with higher gusts and hurricane-force winds extending outward up to the 35 miles.  Strong tropical storm to hurricane-force conditions will be felt in Andros, The Berry Islands and New Providence through this afternoon, while islands including Eleuthera, Abaco and Grand Bahama are now experiencing tropical storm force winds.

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau remains closed until further notice. Hotels throughout the islands have activated hurricane preparedness plans, however, a number of hotels have remained closed due to COVID-19 precautions. Residents are being asked to complete all preparations to mitigate damages and are strongly advised to remain indoors. Any visitors with upcoming travel plans are advised to check directly with airlines and hotels regarding possible impacts on travel.

The Bahamas is an archipelago with more than 700 islands and cays, spread over 100,000 square miles; there could be a tropical storm or hurricane warning for parts of the country while other parts remain unaffected.

The Ministry continues to monitor this weather pattern and will provide updates at www.bahamas.com. For further information visit www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Grand Lucayan, Sold

March 3, 2020 by PressEditor

The Government of The Bahamas sold the Grand Lucayan on Monday, March 2, 2020, to a partnership between Royal Caribbean International and ITM (Bahamas Port Investments Ltd.), which is expected to make a $250 million investment between the hotel and the redevelopment of the cruise port.

The Heads of Agreement Signing Ceremony was held on the Great Lawn of the property, some 11 months following the signing of the Letter of Intent on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis described the day as a wonderful one as the government’s intention was never to hold on to the property, but initially purchased it so save jobs of Grand Bahamians and businesses.

“As we stated at the time, it was our intention to privatize the property as quickly as possible. We wanted to ensure that we found the right buyer who shared our vision for the renewal of Grand Bahama. Our vision was the renewal and rebirth of Grand Bahama’s tourism sector and product as an essential element in the restoration of this island’s potential.

“I am pleased that Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the ITM Group, trading as Bahamas Ports International, share our vision and decided to invest in the longterm future and sustainability of Grand Bahama. The Developer shared their vision of reinventing the tourism product for land-based guests arriving by air and those arriving by cruise and ferry ships with a distinctive Bahamian flavour and characteristics.”

He continued, “This $250 million dollar investment will go a long way in revitalizing Grand Bahama, with myriad economic and employment opportunities for more Grand Bahamians. After many false dawns, there is an exciting new horizon for our second most populous island and economic center. Both the government and the developer are investing in the future and possibilities of Grand Bahama. Grand Bahamas is at the beginning of a new day.”

As a result of the purchase, 3,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created in construction as well as working at the hotel or cruise port.

Grand Bahamians will reap the benefits of capital investment, employment opportunities for Bahamian workers in the tourism and construction industries, increased commerce for local businesses in the Port Lucaya Market Place, taxi drivers and tour operations. This increased revenue will enable the government to support infrastructural programs.

Additionally, training programs will be offered for Bahamians through RCCL Training Academy as well as opportunities for small businesses and Bahamian entrepreneurs including those producers of Bahamian products.

“With Grand Bahama’s proximity to the large Florida market in particular, this investment will promote sustainable economic growth and development on Grand Bahama. This investment will also expand the experience for cruise passengers to The Bahamas. As you are aware, a high number of cruise experiences are Bahamas only cruises, a strategic advantage for The Bahamas and good economics for cruise lines. Given the many millions of people who enjoy cruises and the size of the market, the new ports in Nassau and Grand Bahama will both enjoy increased numbers.

“Ladies and Gentlemen: As a result of this development it is anticipated that Grand Bahama will provide a better and more enjoyable overall guest experience to Freeport, Grand Bahama, and promote future traffic growth to Grand Bahama. We must revitalize public infrastructure and provide economic opportunities and incentives for the private sector to invest in the revitalization of properties and businesses.”

The Prime Minister said discussions are currently ongoing to determine the best way to redevelop the Grand Bahama International Airport, which will require a major investment.

“I first came to Grand Bahama many years ago. Like many of you I have seen its ups and downs, its struggles and its needs. I also saw the hope and tenacity of the many good and talented people who live here. You have demonstrated courage and resilience. With this major investment and other investments, we are restoring the confidence of Grand Bahama. Your development is vital for our entire country. I am grateful that my government could play a role in helping to build a new Grand Bahama.”

Minister of Tourism & Aviation, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar noted that the day could not come fast enough for him, with the opposition to purchase of the property by the government, even though the intention was to own it for only a brief period.  Some 18 months later, the property has been sold.

He said, “As Minister of Tourism and Minister with Responsibility for this property, I am extremely excited that that the intended purchasers of this hotel are Royal Caribbean and the ITM Group.  Between them, they are well funded, bring to the table a great deal of experience in the tourism sector, and have a proven track record of successful projects.

This hotel is to be transformed.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are to be invested into this property to refurbish/renovate/reconstruct 500 rooms in Phase One and another 500 rooms along with 500 villas in Phase Two.  Additional features will include a new casino, a spectacular water theme park and a new shopping, restaurant and retail center.

Add to that the new cruise port that is to be built in the Freeport Harbour to accommodate three ships in Phase One and up to seven ships in subsequent phases, and one will quickly conclude that this entire project, hotel and waterpark right here where we are standing plus new cruise port, plus attractions down at the Freeport Harbour is absolutely monumental for tourism in Grand Bahama.”

Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator the Hon. J. Kwasi Thompson, gave welcome remarks.  Also giving remarks were Robert Shamosh, Chief Executive Officer, Holistica Destinations; Mauricio Hamui, Chief Executive Officer, ITM; and Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

Also, in attendance were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Peter Turnquest and other Ministers of Cabinet; Members of Parliament, Permanent Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, representatives from the business community, taxi drivers, and straw vendors.

Immediately following the official ceremony, guests were treated to the pulsating sounds of a Junkanoo Rushout followed by a reception.

Prior to the start of the Heads of Agreement Signing Ceremony at the Grand Lucayan on Monday, March 2, 2020 Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis and Minister of Tourism & Aviation the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, met with officials of Royal Caribbean International and Bahamas Port Holdings, the group purchasing the hotel. Shown from left are: Rev. February 26, 2020 by PressEditor

The Islands Of The Bahamas used the international stage of the recent Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One (SOBEWFF®), to say thank you to Chef José Andrés.  The legendary Chef and his team were responsible for providing some 3.2 million meals to victims of Hurricane Dorian, which struck the island nation in September of 2019 and caused massive destruction and devastation to Great Abaco, and Grand Bahama.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation presented the humanitarian with a portrait of himself, by world renowned Bahamian artist, Jamaal Rolle, on Thursday night at the SOBEWFF® event, Feeding the World presented by Open Table and hosted by Chef Andrés.

“Our country is forever in your debt for your limitless love, kindness, thoughtfulness and support demonstrated in the massive outreach you organized to feed thousands affected by the storm,”  The Ministry’s Executive Director of Marketing, Mrs. Bridgette King, said while presenting the gift to Chef Andrés.

The well-attended walk-around tasting event was one of a number of events at SOBEWFF® that featured a lineup of more than 100 events. Activities stretched from Miami-Dade and Broward to Palm Beach counties and showcased culinary talent from around the world as well as foremost wine and spirits selections to choose from.

One of the highlights of the weekend of events was the Goya Foods Grand Tasting Village featuring Grand Tasting Tents and Publix Culinary Demonstrations sponsored by Sub-Zero Group Southeast.

A culinary team from The Bahamas was a part of the Grand Tasting Village and received rave reviews from attendees. Thousands enjoyed the tastings of Bahamian native cuisine, including Conch Fritters and Bean ‘n Rice with Lobster and Conch.   Also served at the Bahamas booth were the alcoholic beverages, Guava Bomb and Passion Fruit.  The Bahamian team also provided tastings of one of The Bahamas’ signature alcoholic beverages, Kalik Beer.
