Africa Tourism is hot: WTTC and the African Tourism Board are on it

March 21, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Africa Tourism is hot right now. Overlooked in the past, the tourism potential of the African continent is now becoming visible.

The first African Tourism Board (ATB) is about to be launched in Cape Town during the upcoming World Travel Market Africa in South Africa on April 11 with a list of impressive speakers, ministers, private industry leaders, and stakeholders attending.

A week before the ATB launch in Cape Town on April 11, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) is getting ready for their annual summit in Seville, Spain. With a price tag of $4,000 for a delegate to attend the summit, WTTC is catering to the hundred largest companies in the travel and tourism industry.

Keynote speaker at the summit is none other than former US President Barack Obama who is getting paid an enormous amount of money to share his views on tourism with WTTC CEO Gloria Guevara.

In Cape Town at the African Tourism Board launch, former UNWTO Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai is paying his own way, and so are a number of tourism celebrities and stakeholders from both larger and smaller entities. They want to show their excitement and support for the new African Tourism Board and the potential Africa has for new tourism developments. It’s free to attend the African Tourism Board launch event.

In the last 7 days, the news on tourism growth and potential for African destinations couldn’t have been better and must have come as a surprise for many.

WTTC issued one press release after another on their research reports for Africa. eTN received such releases not only from WTTC but also from ministers, embassies, and tourism boards showing their pride and maybe their surprise and encouragement.

African Tourism Board interim Chairman Juergen Steinmetz, who is also CEO of the eTN Corporation, owner of eTurboNews, which is a media partner for WTTC, applauded Gloria Guevara, CEO of WTTC, for putting Africa in the spotlight for the world’s largest travel and tourism companies.

  • WTTC: Travel and Tourism is Zambia’s 2018 fastest-growing national economic sector

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

In 2022, Southeast Asian hospitality brand Ormond Group will introduce two new hotel concepts to Melbourne’s Central Business District in Victoria, Australia. Each taking residence in their own distinct tower within the buzzing CBD development, the Ormond Melbourne and MoMo’s Melbourne on Flinders Lane, will rise from a 40,000 sqft events and F&B podium. The brand-new development and social gathering space, designed for visitors and locals alike, will boast a purpose-built pedestrian laneway, multi-use spaces, sky bar & restaurant and provide the cultural capital with 537 new guest rooms between the two properties.

“We are delighted to have been given the green light for Ormond Group to push forward with this exciting and ambitious project. Through our new brands, we hope to be able to elevate the hotel scene in Melbourne through our inclusive approach to programming and design. We’ll be looking to work with exciting F&B operators as well as developing inspiring partnerships to bring these properties to life. Our spaces are designed to welcome guests and locals alike. Ormond and MoMo’s will offer culturally relevant experiences for guests and locals at great value for money price points in one central location. We are thrilled to be introducing our hotels to this area of the city’s CBD – we embrace its past, present and future and look forward to meaningfully contributing to the district’s landscape. Together they will provide a dual-brand experience – an upscale boutique hotel that celebrates luxury simplified and an accessible, playful hotel concept that celebrates creative collaboration – bringing a new dynamism to Australia’s hospitality scene.

Designed by Melbourne-based architectural firm, Elenberg Fraser, in collaboration with Craig Tan Architects, the project will be managed by Point Polaris. Ormond Group is currently in the process of making interior design appointments. Both properties will be developed and operated by Ormond Group, who has announced the appointment of Caroline King as Chief Operating Officer.

This year, Ormond Group will open the first properties for its two new lifestyle hotel brands, with the Q3 launches of The Chow Kit – an Ormond Hotel and MoMo’s in Kuala Lumpur.

In Early 2021 the group will open the flagship hotel under the Ormond Hotels brand in Dublin following the extensive, multimillion-dollar refurbishment of The Ormond Hotel, which will be followed by the brand’s Melbourne opening in 2022. The group will be looking to expand into other Australian cities.

Ormond Group is a new player in global hospitality offering design-led travel experiences for all audiences via its brands – Ormond, MoMo’s and Tune Hotels. Ormond Group embodies the spirit of modern-day exploration whilst focusing on the careful curation of great service, design and programming.

Turkish Airlines Cargo carries Topkapı and Dolmabahçe Palaces’ artifacts to Japan

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Turkish Cargo, the air cargo brand of Turkish Airlines that provides service to 124 countries, carried 186 historical artifacts, owned by Dolmabahçe and Topkapı Palaces, to Tokyo, the capital of Japan, as the sponsor carrier, in order to be displayed at the exhibition titled as “The Ottoman Empire and Tulip Culture” held as part of the events organized for 2019 which was declared as the “Year of Turkish Culture” across Japan.

Before the carriage operation through Istanbul – Narita route, the artifacts in Topkapı and Dolmabahçe Palaces were packaged with protective materials that shielded their texture and structure before they were put into 56 high-security wooden cases. Using a wide-body B777F type air freighter belonging to Turkish Cargo, the flight carried no other cargo due to the significant nature of the operation.

Acting with the utmost care for its carriage operations involving historical artifacts, Turkish Cargo conducted this operation with its expert teams again. With this successful operation, the artifacts that have been preserved meticulously for long years in Topkapı Palace such as “Bed of Suleiman the Magnificent”, “Kaftan of Sultan Osman II”, “Ceremonial Flask” along with the artifacts in Dolmabahçe Palace such as “Yusen Shippo Vase”, “Wooden Writing Table”, and “Bamboo Mirror” which were gifted to Sultan Abdulhamid II, by Emperor Meiji of Japan, have been all delivered to Japan.

These 186 artifacts, which weigh around 8 tons and carry great significance for the Turkish culture and history, will be displayed at the National Art Center, Tokyo, between March 20 – May 20, and at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, between June 14 – July 28.

Bringing the missing pieces of the ‘Gypsy Girl Mosaic’ back to its home, carrying more than 50 masterpieces, displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, to Tehran, as well as the ‘The Tomb of Heracles’, dating back to the Roman era, to Istanbul from Geneva, Turkish Cargo, the dynamic brand of the air cargo industry, proved once again how reliable it is in carriage of art works requiring utmost care. In addition to the extensive flight network of Turkish Airlines that reaches to 306 destinations, Turkish Cargo maintains its successful operations by operating dedicated direct cargo flights to 85 destinations.

Turkish Cargo provides service to its global clients across 124 countries with its three vulnerable cargo rooms and certificated staff members in carriage operations for art works requiring utmost care. Turkish Cargo keeps all movements of its vulnerable and valuable cargo under supervision by means of the cameras installed in and around its storage facilities.

Lufthansa launches seven new European destinations from Munich

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

During this year´s summer flight schedule Lufthansa launches seven new destinations in Germany and Europe. There are several weekly flights to Strasbourg and Rostock for the first time, and the offer is being extended to Spain, France, Italy and Croatia. “The summer timetable offers business travellers important connections via Munich to the rest of the world. Holidaymakers can also look forward to attractive new holiday destinations, especially around the Mediterranean,” says Wilken Bormann, Lufthansa CEO Hub Munich. Lufthansa is flying from Munich to 140 destinations in 46 countries this summer. These include 113 destinations in Germany and Europe that can be reached non-stop from the southern Lufthansa hub.

On April 9, Lufthansa will be taking off from Munich to Strasbourg for the first time. As the seat of the European Parliament, the city in Alsace is an important business destination. But Strasbourg is also interesting for short-term holidaymakers: The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bombardier CRJ900 brings passengers to Strasbourg five times a week, offering an optimal option for business and leisure travelers.

Alicante is on the Munich flight plan for the first time on April 12. An Airbus A320 will fly to the port city on the Costa Blanca three times a week.

Until now, Tivat has been considered a little-known holiday destination. Now, a less than two-hour flight links the city in Montenegro to Munich. Steeped in history, Tivat is located near the Bay of Kotor and, with its historical settlements by the fjord-like bay, is a UNESCO World and Natural Heritage Site. From April 13, Lufthansa will be taking off in an Airbus A319 to Montenegro every Saturday.

After a long break, Rostock/Laage is back on the Lufthansa flight schedule. From May 1, the CRJ900 will be flying from Munich twice a day and on every Sunday afternoon. Transfer passengers have optimal connections to the worldwide Lufthansa network in Munich.

Also new in the timetable is Biarritz. The seaside resort on the French Atlantic coast will be served every Saturday from May 25 with a Bombardier CRJ900. The legendary holiday destination offers long sandy beaches and is an Eldorado for surfers.

For the first time, northern Croatia is just an hour’s flight away from Munich: Rijeka is the name of the new Lufthansa destination, which is considered the gateway to the Croatian islands. On Saturdays, also from May 25, a Bombardier CRJ900 will fly to the Kvarner Gulf region.

Tourists can now also reach Rimini on the Italian Adriatic coast directly from Munich with Lufthansa. A CRJ900 will touchdown at the popular holiday destination every Sunday from May 26.

Trump appoints former Delta Air Lines executive new FAA chief

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Former chief of flight operations for Delta Air Lines was appointed by President Trump to run the Federal Aviation Administration, currently under scrutiny for allowing the troubled Boeing 737 MAX 8 to carry passengers.

Steve Dickson, who spent 27 years with Delta before retiring in October as senior vice president of flight ops, is joining the agency in the midst of its most turbulent period in recent history, with Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao having requested an audit of its certification of the aircraft, two of which have been involved in horrific crashes over the past five months.

While Dickson’s name had reportedly been under consideration since November, Trump allowed the FAA to go without an official head for over a year following the end of Obama-era agency chief Michael Huerta’s term. Daniel Elwell, who led the FAA under George W. Bush, has been running the agency in an interim capacity without being confirmed by the Senate.

The man from Delta will be the first FAA head in three decades to have come directly to the job from a senior airline position – something of a pattern for Trump, who has recruited a number of cabinet members from the ranks of corporate America to staff the agencies tasked with regulating their former employers. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who previously worked for Boeing, is just one such appointment.

The FAA is under fire for allowing Boeing to conduct crucial parts of its own safety testing and certification process. A group of current and former engineers from both the regulator and the aircraft manufacturer claims the FAA merely took Boeing’s word that their new plane was safe – an oversight that other countries then allegedly magnified by conducting only minimal testing of their own, assuming the US watchdog wouldn’t have certified an unsafe aircraft. Boeing is also accused of “cutting corners” to quickly certify the plane in order to compete with the new Airbus A320 Neo – between them, Airbus and Boeing comprise the lion’s share of all passenger airliners – and of failing to properly train pilots to work with the onboard systems.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed earlier this month shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, killing all 157 people on board after diving unexpectedly into a field. It was the second Boeing 737 Max 8 to meet such a fate in under six months, and investigators have pointed to “clear similarities” between this crash and the Lion Air Flight 610 disaster in October, which killed 189 people.

Significant milestone: Qatar Airways takes delivery of its 250th aircraft

March 20, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Qatar Airways today celebrated the arrival of its 250th aircraft, an Airbus A350-900 from Toulouse, France, the latest addition to the group’s growing fleet of passenger, Cargo and executive aircraft.

This impressive landmark comes just 22 years after the carrier began operations, and is testament to the incredible growth of an airline that has become world-leading in that time, winning a host of awards, including the Skytrax World Airline of the Year accolade on no less than four occasions.

The new A350-900 joins the airline’s state-of-the-art fleet, where the average age of aircraft is less than five years old. As of 20 March 2019, Qatar Airways’ fleet is made up of 203 passenger aircraft, 25 Cargo and 22 Qatar Executive jets.

Commenting on the achievement, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “I am extremely proud that we have reached this historic landmark of having a fleet that now numbers 250 aircraft. The delivery of our newest Airbus A350-900 is a mark of the outstanding growth we have seen over the last two decades, and to our commitment to flying only the newest and most technologically advanced aircraft in the world.

“Qatar Airways is moving forward with the rapid expansion of our global route network, an enhanced on board product offering in all cabin classes and, most importantly, taking delivery of the world’s most technologically advanced aircraft because we want our customers to have an unforgettable experience when they fly with us. This is an important moment in our growth, and I look forward to seeing our fleet grow even more in the coming years.”

Qatar Airways is renowned for its state-of-the-art fleet. Last year, the airline became the world’s launch customer of the Airbus A350-1000, symbolising Qatar Airways’ determination to lead the way in the industry by pioneering and championing the latest technology and innovation. In 2014, the airline became the global launch customer of the Airbus A350-900, becoming the first airline in the world to operate every family of Airbus’ modern airliner portfolio.

In January 2015, Qatar Airways deployed its newly-received, world-first, Airbus A350 XWB aircraft on the Frankfurt route and in 2016, it became the first airline to fly the A350 family of aircraft to three continents.
