International Expert to Strengthen Tourism COVID Resilience Plan, says Bartlett

May 14, 2020 by PressEditor

Jamaica Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett has announced that his Ministry hired international crisis recovery expert Jessica Shannon to the COVID-19 Tourism Recovery Task Force’s secretariat in an effort to strength the country’s resilience plan for the sector.

Speaking at a digital press briefing hosted by the Tourism Ministry earlier today, Bartlett noted that “she comes to us with a wealth of experience in crisis management. Her work with PWC internationally is going to play a big role in our being able to draw on international best practices, based on her own experiences.”

Shannon is a Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) Advisory Partner and has served as their deployed point partner throughout the Ebola crisis, focusing on the response and recovery efforts in West Africa. In this context she served as a senior advisor to private companies and government organizations in the design of strategy, policies and protocols as well as risk identification and monitoring.

“She was very essential in working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention among others to work out the protocol for the Ebola pandemic. … So, bringing her on board, particularly for her to focus on fine-tuning the protocols over the next few days, is going to be seminal, in terms of enabling us to deliver that protocol the Prime Minister wants in short order,” he added.

In addition to her current client engagements, she is part of a small task force established to refine and drive the implementation of PwC’s global near- and mid-term strategic transformation in the wake of COVID-19.

She has been a Subject Matter Expert for the G20 think tank on economic and financial resilience and a speaker at conferences hosted by Harvard University, the World Bank and the United Nations.  Prior to PwC, she gained strategy experience as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and on the global leadership team at EY. She also has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

This is the second addition to the committee from Price Waterhouse Coopers, as it also includes PWC’s Senior Partner, Wilfred Baghaloo, who chairs the COVID-19 General Tourism Working Team sub-committee.

Baghaloo was also the Co-Chairman of the Tourism Working Group for the Jamaica Tourism Linkages Committee which assessed how to ensure more local linkages to tourism industry and the development of local supply industries to the tourism sector.

The Ministry established the COVID-19 Tourism Recovery Taskforce last month, with a public-private sector collaboration consisting of key stakeholders from the tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism, and Agencies of the Ministry. It will be supported by two Working Teams – one for general tourism and another for cruise tourism – and a Secretariat.

The Task Force has been tasked to bring about a realistic view of the sector’s baseline or starting position; develop scenarios for multiple versions of the future; establish the strategic posture for the sector as well as a broad direction of the journey back to growth; establish actions and strategic imperatives that will be reflected across various scenarios; and establish trigger points to tackle action, which includes a planned vision in a world that is learning to evolve rapidly.

“It is an honor and a pleasure to support the Jamaican tourism sector in this regard. I appreciate the opportunity… I have worked in a number of different crisis response situations to support Governments and the private sector,” said Shannon.

Bavaria: Deeply rooted yet still modern

May 8, 2020 by PressEditor

Bavaria stands for tradition and a sense of homeland. Nowhere else in Germany do the locals cultivate their customs as they do in Bavaria. Deeply rooted, authentic and yet still modern, in other words “Traditionally Different” – this is the nature of the people of Bavaria. They bring modern ideas to tried and tested trades and crafts and they develop and reinterpret elements of their heritage. Local people ensure, in their own individual and inimitable way, that their customs are preserved, and with them part of their Bavarian identity. Under the umbrella brand “Bayern”, BAYERN TOURISMUS Marketing GmbH offers the entire range of tourism service in the Free State of Bavaria. The company has set itself the task of strengthening Bavaria`s reputation as leisure and tourism destination and inspiring visitors to come and stay in Bavaria. All marketing activities run under the umbrella brand claim „Bavaria – traditionally different“. The main focus here is the communication of authentic stories about Bavarian personalities – „Bavarian ambassadors“ – and their way of life. These stories show Bavaria in a traditional yet modern light, and embody the distinctiveness of Bavaria as a travel destination. In 2020 Bavaria Tourism focuses on the following two communication topics: “Creative Bavaria” and “Historical Bavaria”.

The creativity speaks for itself: Creative minds in Bavaria

The Free State is one of the creative locations in Germany. Bavarian traditions also play an important role as the basis for creative development. Craftsmen use traditional materials for innovative products, chefs reinterpret Bavarian cuisine in a creative way and artists use Bavarian clichés for their modern works. Bavarians are very connected to their traditions, preserving them and creatively reinterpreting them, making this region a nut for innovation, modernity and creativity, in many different fields as fashion, art and culture, creative craftsmanship or original celebrations.

In the Bavarian region of Allgäu, an innovative and brave decision was taken by Silvia Beyer, manager of the Hündeleskopfhütte local restaurant in the Alps. Silvia, who chose to stop eating meat when she was twelve and is now member of the German Vegetarian Association, took on the lease of the ancient cabin at 1,180 m in 2015 turning her dream into a reality and opening the first vegetarian mountain cabin in the Alps. The concept of a vegetarian mountain cabin and traditional Bavarian cuisine are not mutually exclusive as many typical Allgäu dishes contain no meat – from Krautkrapfen (cabbage rolls) to the classic “Kaasspatzn”, or cheese spätzle. The new concept is attracting many guests, who visit this area for its breathtaking views over the Allgäu Alps and the mighty Zugspitze. The cabin itself is as pretty as a postcard and the Hündeleskopfhütte looks like a traditional mountain tavern of the kind that have always been present in the Allgäu.

In the magnificent nature landscape rich of vineyards in Franconia, the young Andi Weigand completely renovated his family’s winery while coming back to traditional techniques. Weigand family have been running their winery here since 1990, from grandparents to grandson, and Andi Weigand, a real free spirit and passionate for good wines, decided to transform his father’s winery into a modern business, surprisingly with total support of the old generations. Excellent product lines have arisen as a result: “Der Wilde”, “Der Franke” and “Der Held”; “The Wild One”, “The Franconian” and “The Hero”.  At a young age, Andi Weigand is keeping alive old traditions as he doesn’t harvest the vines with a machine; instead, every vine is picked by hand and checked for quality. Instead of using stainless steel barrels, Andi Weigand ages the majority of his wine in wooden barrels. Just as was the case around 70 years ago. Besides taking a tour of the wine cellar and enjoying a tasting, guests are also welcomed to join the family in the vineyard. Whether to watch or to pitch in and help – Andi and Werner Weigand always enjoy visits during harvest time. More information available is at https://www.bavaria.by/creative/

Bavaria rich in history: “Historical Bavaria”

Historic towns like Nuremberg or Augsburg, magnificent castles like the famous “Neuschwanstein” or imposing fortresses like the longest one in the world in Burghausen – the Free State is rich in cultural and historical sites attractive for tourists of all ages to discover the story of this area. The Bavarians can look back on a unique history that goes back to the 6th century and which is not only full of identity-creating customs and traditions, but also monuments and legacies. Bavarian history can also be experienced in the twelve large state museums of art and cultural history or on one of the numerous holiday routes.

In East Bavaria, the Danube Gorge not only offers breathtaking landscapes but also it unveils the natural heritage and the history of the places, that was formed over 80,000 years ago. The river is located in the heart of the historic cultural landscape, from Weltenburg to Kelheim and marvel at the impressive sight opening up with rocky cliffs up to 100 meters high, centuries-old stone formations, on the boat operated by inland skippers as Renate Schweiger, exerting exerts a magical pull on visitors from near and far – and has done for many a long year. In the 19th century, the nobility was particularly interested in the beauties of their homeland, kings and aristocrats travelled the length and breadth of the idyllic landscapes of Bavaria, including the region around the Danube Gorge. Renate Schweiger has always known that she wanted to inspire other people with the beauty of her beloved homeland. Those who don’t wish to venture up to the caves on their own can explore them on a guided tour. This is also an opportunity to learn a great deal about the plants and animals of the region. The people of Kelheim love, preserve and protect their nature: so that nature can recover, they do not offer any night cruises, for example, and take a winter break between December and the middle of March. In addition, some sights can only be reached on foot.

Visitors can then get back on the paths of King Ludwig II in Upper Bavaria region, discovering the Herrenchiemsee New Palace on the island of Herreninsel. As a great admirer of Louis XIV of France, Bavaria’s King Ludwig II at the end of the 19th century he decided to create his personal Versailles. At the same time, the communities around the lake submitted a petition asking to protect the island of Herreninsel from deforestation so he had to build his palace in the form of a Frenchstyle palace. Since 2012, Veronika Endlicher has been one of four castle wardens at Herrenchiemsee New Palace, heading guided tours. She has been passionate about old imperial and is particularly fascinated by the complex construction history of Herrenchiemsee New Palace and the person of King Ludwig II. Despite all the romance, self-styled Moon King was a visionary who was ahead of his time in many ways, and his innovative and novel ideas are reflected in many elements of his castles, including Herrenchiemsee: the rooms are large and high, while the interior is opulent in style with a predominance of gold; the most striking feature is the monumental staircase under a roof constructed of iron and glass. The use of materials such as iron was still relatively new for castles of that period. Ludwig II also commissioned special systems for heating both the water and the interior rooms. Even the king’s dining table is operated mechanically: the so-called “Tischleindeck-dich” (Wishing Table) can be lowered, enabling him to eat his meals without being served. The chandeliers in the magnificent Mirrored Hall can also be lowered. More Information is available at https://www.bavaria.by/historic

May 7, 2020 by PressEditor

Food is at the heart of most things in life, and travel is not excluded. As most international foodies would know, culture and local cuisine have a lot to do with the destination you choose to visit, and in that regard, the Caribbean will not disappoint.

In the current times we are living in with stay-at-home orders, many of us are cooking more or discovering a new passion. Until we can get to the places we want to travel to again, here’s a recipe from Sandals Resorts and Beaches to help create that delectable dining experience in your own kitchen.

While in The Caribbean, famous for its sand, sea, sun and fun, chances are high that you will find nontraditional food. Especially as you tour any of its many countries, experiencing the vibrant culture, which varies from island to island.

When it comes to culinary travel, islands like Jamaica stand out for the variety of things available to try. On top of the list are items like jerk chicken, Jamaican patties, curried goat, shrimp rundown, and more.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll zero in on shrimp rundown, a delectable coconut-milk based dish, which is very affordable in Jamaica. Rundown can also be served alongside other seafood mains like mackerel and salmon. Some people also choose to cook up their rundown sauce with chicken, for a little something different.

3 tablespoons butter

1 small onion, chopped

3 stalks scallion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

¼ Scotch Bonnet pepper, sliced (optional)

1 teaspoon fresh thyme

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter and sauté the shrimp, onion, scallion, garlic, Scotch Bonnet pepper and thyme until onion is tender.

Remove shrimp only and reserve. Add coconut milk and half the tomato, bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium and let simmer until reduced to about 3 cups of liquid.

Add the bell pepper and simmer until coconut milk thickens and coats them. Add the shrimp back into the mix and cook for one minute to heat through. Adjust seasoning with salt and allspice to taste, and serve with steamed white rice, or your preferred starch.

Caribbean inspiration

Rundown is one of those dishes made in Jamaica which gained popularity due to its affordability and wonderful taste. Today there are many variations, each more delicious than the next. If you’re on your way to making the ultimate shrimp rundown, know that in time you’ll be able to perfect this recipe – you can even add your own ingredients for a personalized touch once you’ve made the recipe your own.

If on the other hand, you try to create something tasty over the hot stove and leave your cooking session less inspired than when you began, take heart – there’s always the option of a Caribbean all-inclusive vacation where you can enjoy unlimited gourmet dining, which includes expertly cooked shrimp rundown! While relaxing in The Caribbean and taking in the peaceful ambiance, there simply will not be anything better than that!

Nevis Mango & Food Festival set for July 4-7, 2019

April 10, 2019 by Forimmediaterelease

Now in its fifth year, the Nevis Mango & Food Festival, which will take place July 4-7, 2019, is quickly becoming a serious contender for top spots in Caribbean food festivals and this year is shaping up to be another success.

Nevis mangoes, of which there are 44 varieties, are truly special and prized for their texture and flavor. They inspire culinary creativity among celebrity and local chefs who carefully select their favorites and turn them into everything from soups and salsas, to marinades, sauces, cocktails and fabulous desserts. Locals, however, happily eat them fresh off the trees!

As in previous years the 2019 festival will prominently feature the culinary talents of UK Iron Chef, restaurateur, cookbook author and frequent Food Network chef, Judy Joo. “Chef Joo fell in love with Nevis upon her first visit and we are thrilled and honored that she has embraced the island and the festival each year,” says Nevis Tourism Authority (NTA) CEO Greg Phillip. “Not only is Judy inventive and innovative in her approach to cooking with mangoes, but her stewardship of the event has been an encouragement to our local Nevisian chefs who take part in the festival and competitions. We look forward to another spectacular year.”

The four-day mango extravaganza starts with special “Mango Fest” menus at a number of local restaurants and also at many of the resorts. Guests from all over the island are happy to reserve their spots for lunches and dinners that feature this special ingredient. And, the chefs from Nevis resorts and restaurants will be joined this year with other chefs who will all compete in a mango cook-off on Sunday, July 7, at Oualie Beach for the final celebration and festival. With live music and food abounding, this is the day not to be missed.

Mark your calendars now for the 2019 Nevis Mango & Food Festival and visit  nevismangofest.com for more information.
