ADDIS ABABA – Hilton Addis Ababa announced a partnership with Sealed Air-Diversey – known for their pioneering approach in developing innovative solutions for waste reduction, resource conservation and product security. Sealed Air Diversey will repurpose used soap bars through ‘Soap for Hope’, a program which provides hygiene for communities in need.

This innovative ‘Soap for Hope’ program was pioneered by Sealed Air to recycle used hotel soaps into fresh soap for distribution in local communities. Its objectives are three-fold – to save lives by giving free soap to communities that have no or limited access to soap; to provide livelihoods to the local community through soap-recycling; and to help hotels reduce waste and protect the environment through recycling soap.

Commenting on the launch of Sealed Air Diversey’s ‘Soap for Hope’ program at Hilton Addis Ababa, Maxime Verstraete, vice president, corporate responsibility, Hilton said: “It is fantastic to see Hilton Addis Ababa join the ‘Soap for Hope’ soap recycling program, which will help to preserve the environment and support communities in need. Hilton is the largest hotel company to recycle soap across the world, with close to 1,500 properties engaged in soap recycling. Since October 2013, our hotels in the Middle East and Africa have already helped recycle nearly 300 tonnes of soap, and with Hilton Addis Ababa joining the program, we will be able to do even more.”

Stefan Phang, Sealed Air’s Regional CSR and sustainability director, said, “‘Soap for Hope’ is a program that directly engages the local people in helping their own community. At the same time, Sealed Air is also helping our hotel customers on waste recycling. Through this program, we hope to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment in Ethiopia, and create shared value for everyone involved – our company, our customers and the community.”

Rudi Jagersbacher, president of Hilton in Middle East and Africa, and Jan van der Putten, area vice president of operations for Africa and the Indian Ocean, attended the launch event where representatives from Sealed Air demonstrated the soap recycling process.
