Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort recycles over 4k plastic bottles a day

Green Globe recently recertified the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort in the Dominican Republic awarding the property an outstanding compliance score of 91%.

Green Globe is the original certification program developed over 25 years ago to guide tourism enterprises along the path to sustainable operations and management.  The Green Globe Standard includes 44 mandatory core criteria supported by over 380 compliance indicators. The certification rates the multi-hotel complex, comprised of both the Barceló Bávaro Palace and the Barceló Bávaro Beach Adults Only Resort, as one of the most sustainable properties in the world,

Pedro Parets, General Manager at the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort said, “Green Globe is the most important sustainability certification system within the tourism sector and it is an honor for Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort to receive this recognition which rewards our constant commitment to provide the best service for our guests whilst continuing to respect the characteristic Caribbean environment surrounding the Complex.”

The recycling of 4.000 plastic bottles daily from its restaurants and buffets is one example of the environmental programs at the property that support sustainable practices. Furthermore, a state-of- the-art waste treatment facility is regulated, monitored and maintained by a professional outside contractor that significantly assists with minimising environmental impacts.

Energy and water saving initiatives are also in place. Biomass and solar power is incorporated into the energy supply and a system has been implemented that uses thermal heat generated from boilers to supply hot water to the laundry. Barceló Bávaro also has closed loop water management systems that utilize black and grey water to reduce overall usage and maximize efficiency.

Today, 33 years later, the hotel has completely reinvented itself to become a pioneering example in the Caribbean once more. Following a major refurbishment, we have two luxury establishments within the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort complex: the first being the Barceló Bávaro Palace, providing a tailor-made paradise for families 24 hours a day; and on the other hand, the  Barceló Bávaro Beach Adults Only, with exclusive areas where guests can enjoy this wonderful place in a peaceful adults-only environment.
