Arab tourism conference in Salalah talks about promoting culture, heritage

The opening ceremony of the conference was attended by Dr Abdulaziz Othman al Twaijri, director general of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and tourism officials from outside and inside the sultanate.

The conference was organised by the Arab Center for Tourism Media (ACTM), in cooperation with the Ministry of Dhofar and Tourism Municipality. Academics and media professionals from various Arab media institutions took part in the conference also.

Dr Sultan bin Khamis al Yahya’ee, chairman of ACTM, delivered a speech where he stressed the significance of the conference. He underlined the enormous tourism potentials at the Arab level also.

Dr Taleb al Rifai, former secretary general of the global world Tourism Organization, highlighted in his speech the role of tourism media to advertise community knowing of the true knowledge of tourism, travel and comprehensive development.

He affirmed the continued growth of tourism and travel sector regardless of the challenges facing them. He also remarked that tourism and travel donate to enriching the world’s cultural diversity.

Princess Diana Firas, chairperson of Petra National Trust and Unesco Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage highlighted the efforts of Petra National Trust to preserve the cultural, environmental and archaeological heritage of Petra and the encompassing areas, stressing the efforts of ACTM in highlighting the Arab tourism components.

The conference included two sessions. The initial session handled ‘Contribution of the Arab media in tourism promotion and attractions and responsibility frameworks’.

The second session handled ‘Tourism crisis management in light of the political and economic changes’.

The sessions were attended by media and academics professionals from various Arab media organisations.

The conference was organised on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of launching the Arab Center for Tourism Media, which seeks to get ready Arab media cadres to advertise and promote Arab tourism.
