Seychelles showcased at FITUR 2022 in Spain

January 26, 2022 by PressEditor

Kick-starting its international marketing calendar, a small delegation headed by Bernadette Willemin, Tourism Seychelles’ Director General for Destination Marketing, attended FITUR, an international trade fair held in Madrid, Spain between Jan 19 and 23, 2022.

It was a busy five days in Madrid for the Seychelles team, where Mrs Willemin was joined by the Tourism Seychelles Marketing Executive for Spain and Portugal market, Mrs. Monica Gonzalez Llinas, and Mr. Andre Butler Payette the General Manager of Company 7° South, a destination marketing company based in Seychelles.

The first three days were dedicated to meetings with travel trade professionals and media while on Saturday and Sunday, the island nation’s stand was transformed into a business-to-consumer platform to welcome the general public.

This provided the perfect opportunity to boost their knowledge of the destination and entice them to visit Seychelles. The Seychelles team was also at hand to respond to their enquiries.

The Iberian Peninsula, occupied by Spain and Portugal, has in the past produced good business for Seychelles and has potential to do so again, Mrs Willemin said. “The Iberian market is one that fits well with Seychelles’ tourism development policy, which is aiming for quality versus quantity, as visitors from the region are known to be very jovial people and good spenders. The business is supported by both the Spanish and Portuguese trade, as well as the local travel trade in the Seychelles and Spain contributes the lion’s share of the business,” she highlighted.

“3,137 visitors travelled to Seychelles from Spain from January to December 2021 despite COVID. The current outlook for the Spanish market in particular looks positive and should this trend continue, it will help in further developing our business together with the support of Seychelles trade partners, both locally and in the market place. This will hopefully keep the growing the confidence of the Iberian travel operators and agents to continue selling the destination and increase the Iberian sales figures. Trade support is especially important in the face of growing competition with much deeper pockets and resources than we do.” Mrs Willemin said.

Reporting on his attendance, Mr Payette, General Manager of 7°South said, “It was a privilege for 7° South to join Tourism Seychelles in Madrid for FITUR. After many months of virtual meetings this event has come at an opportune moment allowing us to physically showcase all that we have to offer in Seychelles.

FITUR was a resounding success which permitted us to reconnect with old partners as well as engage with new ones, as we look to further develop this growing market filled with potential for the future.”

FITUR is a meeting point for tourism professionals from around the globe and is considered to be the leading trade fair for inbound and outbound Ibero-American markets. The importance of the travel and trade show is reflected in the growing number of exhibiting companies from participating countries, trade participants, the general public and journalists recorded each year.

In 2021, 3,137 visitors travelled to Seychelles from the Iberian market, currently one of the largest contributors of tourists to the island nation, figures from the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics show.

Tourism Seychelles Holds First Marketing Meeting of 2022

January 25, 2022 by PressEditor

Tourism Seychelles has kicked off the year with a two-week series of consultations as of Monday January 24, 2022, with its local and international partners on its marketing strategy for the year.

The annual consultative event, which this year is taking place virtually, in the form of an online webinar via the ZOOM online meeting platform, is aimed at gathering views and comments from the local trade partners on the destination’s marketing strategy.

One of most valued events for tourism representatives in Seychelles and abroad, the meeting reunites partners to discuss various pertinent issues relating to the marketing of the destination for 2022.

The destination, which recorded 182,849 visitor arrivals in 2021, an increase of 59% compared to 2020, earned according to provisional figures issued by the Central Bank, an estimated US$309 million and a per visitor spend of US$1,693. It is aiming to attract between 218,000 to 258,000 visitors and a per visitor spend of US$1,800 in 2022.

Attending the gathering, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, who along with Principal Secretary for Tourism Mrs. Sherin Francis delivered keynote addresses.

In his address, the Minister for Tourism urged partners to keep their focus on enriching the destination’s profile.

“Let us look at what products and services we offer to our visitors. It is no secret that the aspirations of our visitors and travelers have changed. The call of sea, sun and sand is no longer sufficient on their own. This presents a major opportunity for Seychellois. We want to encourage new ideas and new entrants into tourism.  The government creates the environment and facilitate diversification, but it is you entrepreneurs and businesses who must show the appetite for it,” said Minister Radegonde.

The Principal Secretary for Tourism reminded all participants the Tourism Seychelles team remains committed to its target of driving the Seychelles’ economic recovery while keeping with its sustainability goals.

“While we recover from the shock of the pandemic, let us not forget we are also in a race towards our survival. Seychelles is a nation where two of us out of each household earn a living from the tourism industry and where this very industry depends on its natural beauty and ideal climate. We must not lose sight of the need to keep sustainability central in our agenda,” said Mrs. Francis.

She further mentioned that the team effort invested in by all the partners including the government and other agencies has enabled the destination to recoup about 50% of its 2019 business, which remains the countries best year in terms of tourism arrival numbers.

The consultations featured presentations from the Director General for Destination Marketing Mrs. Bernadette Willemin and the Director General for Destination Planning and Development, Mr. Paul Lebon.

On her part, Mrs. Willemin has mentioned that the visitor’s arrival figures for 2021 have been very encouraging. She mentioned that amidst the challenges the destination is facing due to the global sanitary issue, the team will be focusing its efforts in increasing the reach of the destination through various strategies.

“In a nutshell, we are focusing our marketing efforts in diversifying our portfolio taking into consideration key sources of customer segments but also diversifying our other markets without neglecting our investment in our traditional markets. We believe that Seychelles has a beautiful story to tell and for that we would need to deliver better, to personalize our marketing to ensure we reach our audiences with the right information and at the right time,” said the Director General for marketing.

Over the next two weeks, the Tourism Seychelles marketing managers, and representatives from across the globe will present their plans and strategy for the year 2022 to members of the local trade in small groups or one-on-one meetings.

All sessions are being hosted by the Director General for Marketing Mrs. Bernadette Willemin who will be assisted by the respective market manager and representatives. The meeting will end on Friday February 4, 2022.

Jamaica to Sign MOU on Tourism Development with Spain

January 22, 2022 by PressEditor

Jamaica Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has announced that Jamaica and Spain will craft a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on various aspects of tourism development and economic transformation.

The announcement follows a meeting with Spain’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, Hon. Reyes Maroto, earlier today at FITUR, the world’s most significant annual international travel and tourism trade show, now underway in Madrid, Spain. In addition to the Dominican Republic, which is this year’s FITUR Partner Country, FITUR brings together almost a hundred countries with seventy official representations.

“I am very pleased to announce that Jamaica and Spain will develop a memorandum of understanding for collaboration in various areas of tourism development. Minister Morato and I today had extensive discussions regarding various areas of recovery and the reimagining of tourism as a driver of economic growth and transformation,” said Bartlett.

“We discussed the role of the United Nations World Tourism Organization as a critical institution for securing the academic and practical applications necessary to redevelop the new tourism that will enable small countries and small and medium-sized players to have a more equitable experience and to recover much of the lost revenue,” he added.

Jamaica is a thought leader.

Bartlett also used the opportunity to invite Minister Morato to Jamaica’s first-ever Global Tourism Resilience Day, scheduled for February 17th, 2022, at the World Expo in Dubai. The day will focus on the ability of countries to build capacity to respond to international and global shocks and be able to predict with greater certainty their responses. It will also aid countries in understanding and mitigating the effects of these shocks on their development, but most importantly, it will help them manage and recover quickly after these shocks.

“Jamaica is indeed a thought leader in this area, and we are committed to working with all our partners to build a stronger, more effective, and resilient world that can respond better to shocks that will come as we continue on this journey of life,” expressed Bartlett.

New RIU Hotel Breaking Ground in Trelawny Next Month

January 21, 2022 by PressEditor

Jamaica Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett (see right in the photo), pauses for a photograph with Carmen Riu Güell, owner of the RIU Hotels & Resorts chain, following a meeting to discuss her plans to break ground for a new 700-room resort in Trelawny next month.

RIU Hotels & Resorts is a Spanish hotel chain founded by the Riu family as a small holiday firm in 1953. It was founded in Mallorca, Spain, and is currently 49% owned by TUI and run by the third generation of the family. They now have 6 hotels with over 3,000 rooms in Jamaica.

The news comes as Tourism Minister Hon Edmund Bartlett and a small team attend FITUR, the world’s most significant annual international travel and tourism tradeshow, currently underway in Madrid, Spain.

The Jamaica Ministry of Tourism and its agencies are on a mission to enhance and transform Jamaica’s tourism product, while ensuring that the benefits which flow from the tourism sector are increased for all Jamaicans. To this end it has implemented policies and strategies that will provide further momentum for tourism as the engine of growth for the Jamaican economy.

The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the tourism sector makes the fullest contribution possible to Jamaica’s economic development given its tremendous earning potential.

At the Ministry, they are leading the charge to strengthen the linkages between tourism and other sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and entertainment, and in so doing encourage every Jamaican to play their part in improving the country’s tourism product, sustaining investment, and modernizing and diversifying the sector to foster growth and job creation for fellow Jamaicans. The Ministry sees this as critical to Jamaica’s survival and success and has undertaken this process through an inclusive approach, which is driven by the Resort Boards, through wide-scale consultation.

Recognizing that a collaborative effort and a committed partnership between the public and private sectors will be needed to achieve set targets, central to the Ministry’s plans is maintaining and nurturing its relationship with all key stakeholders. In so doing, it is believed that with the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development as a guide and the National Development Plan – Vision 2030 as a benchmark – the Ministry’s goals are achievable for the benefit of all Jamaicans.
